UltimoDragonQuest posted:I was hoping Speedy was next since the Hulu version doesn't look nearly as good as Safety Last. It will look great when it's remastered. Speedy has an original camera negative, but I remember it having some odd shrinkage issues. All the transfers made for the original box set were 1080i off the UCLA restorations. Safety Last! was 2K off Lloyd's nitrate print. The Freshman will probably be from UCLA's preservation elements since it had to be pieced from several sources.

THE B&N sale seems pretty quiet this year, probably thanks to that huge Amazon sale not too long ago? The online rollout for this sale is crawling along here too - just searched through a few films and Night of the Hunter & Godzilla both aren't yet listed at the sale price. I guess I will wait to go to a retail store before getting anything online!

Ah, my favorite time of the year. As a child I had Christmas, as an adult I have the B&N Criterion sale. Picked up on blu-ray: Rashomon, Safety Last, Three Colors Trilogy, Lord of the Flies. I'm sure this won't be my last order.

Heading out to grab some at lunch. Definitely getting Kagemusha, Brazil, Badlands and America Lost and Found. And probably one of House, World on a Wire, Two-Lane Blacktop, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Ministry of Fear or Tokyo Drifter. Any thoughts or must-avoids on that list? I spend so much time managing my wishlist and trying to whittle it down to what to purchase during each sale. Love / hate it.

Why the heck are the Criterion blu-rays locked to the cursed Region A? I suppose I should be thankful since I just spent a fortune on DVDs and it would have been even more expensive had I bought blu-rays.

Might be able to grab one this time, but I just had to replace my motherboard, cpu and power supply, so things are tight. Safety Last, Late Spring and On the Waterfront would be on their way to me otherwise.

I love this sale. Went and picked up on Blu-ray: Repo Man (a personal favorite, as much a purchase for me as for my dad), Certified Copy (just saw this on Netflix the other day - Kiarostomi is one of my new favorites), and Colonel Blimp (a total blind-buy, but I've hard good things). I was pretty bummed that they didn't have Badlands, as that was my biggest priority, but I'll get it somehow. It definitely won't be my last trip; I've been saving up for this.

I finally have money to blow on a blind purchase. I can't decide between Shock Corridor and Videodrome. Thoughts?

I just spent all of my money on stupid car bullshit. Last November I had just lost my job. One of these Criterion sales I'll actually have some goddamn money. Someday. But yeah, the Videodrome Blu is amazing.

I ordered: Safety Last, Naked Lunch, Medium Cool, Wild Strawberries, Badlands, Repo Man all on blu-ray. Going to order these later on this month: Summer Interlude, Summer with Monika, Trilogy of Life, Rashomon, Shoah.

This morning I picked up: Rushmore, The Blob, The Tin Drum, Kagemusha, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Things to Come, Safety Last! and Shoah. According to the guy at B&N, the sale is ending next Monday (the 15th), which seems like bullshit, but maybe it's only online orders that are sticking around till the 29th. Planning on getting these later in the month: A Night to Remember, Salo, Lord of the Flies, Colonel Blimp, Richard III, Late Spring, The Phantom Carriage, Le Havre, Days of Heaven, Ride with the Devil, By Brakhage, America Lost and Found, Night of the Hunter, Eating Raoul, Jubal, Marketa Lazarova and Shock Corridor. Couldn't splurge this time around but I got By Brakhage and Cocteau's Orpheus on Blu-Ray. Haven't seen any of the Brakhage or Orpheus so I'm looking forward to being able to sit down to watch 'em.

Just blind-bought Godzilla and 8 1/2, and pre-ordered Lord of the Flies. I might order more if I can get my friend to give me back the $140 she owes me. Oh god my wallet

I only own Band of Outsiders, and didn't really care for Contempt at the time but could give it another go. But it's irrelevant now since I've decided to budget myself to under $100 and instead will go with Qatsi trilogy, In the Mood for Love and Repo Man. Although I really, really want to upgrade my copy of Brazil (still the original 3-disc set!) as well as Branded to Kill and Wings of Desire. Two Lane Blacktop is also tempting. Edit: Actually maybe I can get comments about Two Lane Blacktop? I thought Vanishing Point was kind of hokey. Cacator fucked around with this message at 04:53 on Jul 10, 2013 |

Thoughts on blind-buying two or three of these on bluray? Wings of Desire; Paris, Texas; Night of the Hunter; Safety Last; Medium Cool; Naked; The Killing; Thin Red Line.

My recommendations for three of those: Night of the Hunter, The Thin Red Line, and Naked.

Of the ones I've seen, I'd rank them as such: The Killing, Wings of Desire, Thin Red Line, Naked, Night of the Hunter. All great movies, though. Night of the Hunter has Robert Mitchum at his best and some very interesting cinematography, but it's not something I'd rewatch often.
