Hi guys, sorry it's been quiet for a while. I've been easily distracted over the last few weeks for some reason (even though I've had plenty of days off among them  ), and still haven't had a really serious go at the Sami version of Captain Drake! (oh yeah, my previous post was an April Fool, for those who didn't read the "microfilm" ;)).

On the plus side, it was my birthday yesterday and I received a 3DS XL! I'd been trying to hold off on getting one until they announced an Advance Wars game for it, but I eventually caved. At least I've got the two next best things - Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars (designed by Julian Gollop, one of the men behind the original X-COM) and Fire Emblem: Awakening, which apparently came out on the day of my birthday in Europe. I also received the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, to ensure my recommended dose of Casino Night Zone.

Anyway, in lieu of, y'know, a proper update, today I grabbed all my old handheld Nintendo systems and put them all into one photograph because I'm silly like that:

Game Boy Original - 16 carts
Top Row: Alleyway, Boxxle, Dr. Mario, French Translator, Golf, Mario & Yoshi, Othello, Pinball Fantasies.
Bottom Row: Side Pocket, Space Invaders, Super RC Pro-Am, Tetris, Tetris 2, Tennis, Worms, Yoshi's Cookie.

Game boy Color (purple) - 8 carts
Top Row: Chessmaster, David O'Leary Total Soccer 2000, F1 World Grand Prix II, Jimmy White's Cueball.
Bottom Row: Micro Machines 1&2, Microsoft Best of Entertainment Pack, Microsoft Puzzle Collection Entertainment Pack, Worms Armageddon.

Game boy Advance (purple) - 10 carts
Top Row: Advance Wars (well duh), Advance Wars 2 (ditto), Columns Crown, Pinball Challenge, Puyo Pop Fever,
Bottom Row: Sheep, SimCity 2000, Sonic Advance, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf, Worms World Party.

DS Original - 31 carts
Top Row: Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Advance Wars: Dark Conflict, Age of Empires: the Age of Kings, Cars, Drawn to Life, Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training, Geometry Wars: Galaxies.
Second Row: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Lego Star Wars II, Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime Hunters (Demo), Meteos, Polarium, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Professor Layton and the Lost Future.
Third Row: Professor Layton and Pandora's Box, Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call, Puyo Pop Fever (... again), Puzzle League DS, Scribblenauts, SimCityDS, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Sonic Rush.
Bottom Row: Sonic Rush Adventure, Super Monkey Ball Touch 'n' Roll, Super Scribblenauts, Tetris DS, Worms Open Warfare, Worms Open Warfare 2, Zoo Keeper.

3DS XL - 3 carts
Only Row: Fire Emblem: Awakening, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Sonic Generations.

... That's a lot of tiny games. Spot the games made by Intelligent Systems, I guess? ;).

Well I dunno. I really enjoyed it myself. AW Advance Campaign is a good example of levels that are expertly designed right up to the limits of what's possible from the player. No compromises or serious balance issues or "player restricted runs", just straight up difficult strategies. It's like a Cave shoot-em-up. I was disappointed that future AWs past the first one didn't have the same level of difficulty or balance.

Advance Campaign Mission S1: Divide & Conquer! AC (or "Hostile Takeover")

(ScotchDK added the shades. I did the somewhat more amateurish text. This one's actually from the NC mission title, which you may recall I decided to animate for this mission to show the effect off).

Youtube (15m34s)

With special guest host, Sockerbagarn! Since I've hit a pretty big brick wall in the form of Captain Drake! as Sami, and since Socker proved to be so adept at Kanbei's Error? that he unlocked the Sonja path, he's stepped into the breech by showing off how these missions change in AC... and doing a much better job than me in the process :v:. Joining Socker and myself are Fedule and BrooklynBruiser.

What can I say about this mission? Well, Max starts with one fewer tank than he does in Normal Campaign. Sonja has another rocket launcher deployed, a medium tank hanging out around her HQ, replacing a tank, and a few more general extra bits. On the whole, it doesn't feel that much worse than the original mission, although the original had some nasty twists to it (most generally, that you're up against Sonja in the fog with the horror of Enhanced Vision).

Either way, Socker puts it pretty eloquently:

Sockerbagarn posted:

this is how you draw arrows right, paul?

And he puts me to shame with an S rank (and a rank-up to the heady heights of Grey Cat), and on the whole does some rather neat play. Looking forward to seeing how he handles Sami Marches On! AC (also looking forward to the day I finally get some kind of purchase on Captain Drake! AC, but hey).

Advance Campaign Mission 11A: Captain Drake! AC as Andy (or "Hope You Like Dissolve Cuts")

# I see tanks of green, battleships too... #

# I see them shooting, at me and you... #

# And I think to myself... #

# ... let's be Andy insteeeaaaad... #

Knew I was tempting fate with that April Fools' Day joke. After much battering, failed plans, staring at unfogged maps (I know, I know) going "HOW???" and so on, I give in on the Sami version of Captain Drake! AC. Ultimately, I've got to make a sacrifice here if I want to stand a chance of reaching The Final Battle! AC. I might come back to it later, or possibly someone else might like to show it off. So let's go follow Andy through Green Earth, with a view to getting an Andy/Max/Drake team for The Final Battle!

Youtube Video
(34m32s)

As the alternate title for this update alludes, I hope you like dissolve cuts. There are, if I'm counting correctly, 43 of them in this video. There are two reasons for this: one, I've started actually trying to learn AviSynth and two, without them this video would have been nearly fifty minutes long - and even I'm not going to subject my co-commentators to that kind of length (speaking of co-commentators, joining me are Krysmphoenix and Sockerbagarn). Most of the cuts are fairly straightforward - cutting out me faffing about scrolling around the map for no good reason, as I try to decide what to do next. I actually keep most of the battle animations, and all of the AI's turns, in there. Incidentally, I've gone back to using the maps made by the fine folk of Wars World News for these full-map shots - fogged and unfogged.

The changes to the map are fairly minor. Andy is down a rocket launcher (which will certainly make the battle of attrition over the big ol' bridge chokepoints on this map more of a chore) while Drake picks up an extra battleship, and a second infantry unit on the central island. Other than that, it's pretty much the same: first side to twelve properties is the victor.

Much like the Normal Campaign version of this mission, it's pretty easy to not lose - take out those two central island infantry, and the AI's stupidity around landers will ensure that Drake will never mobilise another force to recapture that island. This makes a nice change from the pressures of Kanbei's Error? and the Sami version of Captain Drake! AC. The tricky part here is forcing out a quick win over those long, grindy bridges - and you won't be surprised to learn that I don't succeed there. But it doesn't take as long as the fifty-minute raw footage would have you believe.

Let's scroll on a bit to the big moves on Day 3, as my subs begin pounding on those battleships and my grip over the central island tightens. I'll be using that APC and lander to stop the battleships targetting my important tanks, artillery and infantry, naturally.

Day 4. I felt that this somewhat lucky shot on a 49% attack was worth a GIF. Granted Drake's 6HP was probably something more like 51 or 52HP on a hundred-point scale, but it's still nice to see (also, pretty snow effects).

Drake's other battleship also takes a pounding, from artillery and sub working in tandem. I'm going to lose that sub next turn to Drake's sub, but the battleship's a higher priority right now. Lander tries to get back to the home shore (and fails, thanks to the random weather on this mission. Goddamn snow), while the APC sets itself up once more as cannon fodder for Drake's rockets . On the island, Drake's second infantry unit falls and we can now take these four properties unopposed.

Come day four for Drake, it's time for the first Tsunami of Advance Campaign.

Which, naturally, gets countered immediately. Obviously Andy's the best CO to use against Drake, which is part of the reason why Nell hints as much when you lose as Sami. But on the other hand, if Andy had Sami's mission and Sami had Andy's, then I think the Sami (now Andy) mission would still be the harder one.

Skipping ahead a whole bunch to Day 8. By now, we have the central island and we can't lose. But we can't win yet, either: that western bridge is looking messy and choked up as hell. Time to start thinning it out.

Some of these moves aren't particularly sound tactically, but there is some strategic value to them. Attacking that light tank with my middie, reducing it to 1HP, will cause it to retreat and potentially open me up to more of Drake's middies - but he's got another light tank he can move up first (thanks to good ol' dumb AI design). And I really need to start working my way through this thicket of troops. Meanwhile in the north-east, I let one of my infantry get very heavily damaged to ensure that another one stays at full health - and thus in prime capturing condition.

The next day, I get a bit too cheeky and try it again. After all, surely the herp derp AI will move the AA up first before the medium tank (because it moves faster, right?)...

Nope. Once more, Drake outsmarts me by being slightly less dumb than I was expecting him to be. But it does leave his medium tank in range of all my arties...

Beautiful. Note that Drake's rocket launcher's out of ammo: we get a turn of respite on his next day.

# You say Tsunami, and I say Hyper Repair #

Pushing onwards.

But Drake's not giving up without a fight. At least I only have to defend the eastern bridge - in the west, I have to try and grind a way through.

Drake manages to push me back a bit.

But that's okay. I can regroup.

And on Day 16 I do something a little unusual - launch Hyper Repair before Drake's next Tsunami.

My army was looking a little battered, and I wanted to steal some initiative and finally push up along this goddamn bridge. For the most part, it worked - that stubborn 1HP rocket launcher aside.

With a fresh tank in the north-east, things are looking pretty good.

Naturally, Drake wants to capitalise on getting to launch a Tsunami that isn't going to be immediately NOPE'd by Andy.

But it's too late. His defences are broken, and I've pushed through far enough that I'm in range to start taking the final city I need next turn.

And on Day 20, it's all over.

This mission was definitely a grind, but not too difficult on the whole - kind of a shame, given how much I chickened out of its Sami counterpart. The scoring - an A-Rank for 20 days - is fairly lenient too.

And I finally reach the heady height of the Cat ranks! Of course, Sockerbagarn's already there. Tune in next time as he continues to reach the parts of Advance Campaign that other LPers (i.e. me) can't reach. Also for a chance finally to hear Sami's theme in a video (sorry I couldn't deliver on that).

I do not blame you for doing Andy's version of the mission. When I was doing the advance campaign I also got stuck on Sami's version for a long time until I gave up and looked up the un-fogged version. Only then did I remember that I was using Sami in a fog of war map where they were kind enough to give you reefs to hide your lander in. Even still though, it's a ridiculously hard mission that's tough to predict precisely because of the fog of war.

Thankfully though I don't remember the campaign getting as hard as Sami's Captain Drake gets until the very last few missions, so it should be (relatively) smooth sailing from here!

Advance Campaign Mission S2: Sami Marches On! AC (or "Mech Trickle")

(Image edits by Sockerbagarn himself)

Youtube Video (16m14s)

Sockerbagarn continues his march through the AC Sonja missions and for those who've been waiting to hear Sami's theme in a video (but were sorely let down by my incompetence), now's your chance. Joining Socker are Sylphid and myself.

Socker's thoughts on the mission:

"Some actual strategy talk on this one since I can't just MAX SMASH my way to victory. The key to easily beating this mission is to not commit too many troops to the southern island. The big forest slows down Sonja - the master of fog of war - a lot. If you keep your battleship on standby to rain down fire upon her troops as they come out of the fog you break their fighting strength before they can amount to much.

"When it comes to Sonja's navy you need to sink her battleship that is on the offence. If you don't overplay your hand you can lure it close and eliminate it in one turn, preventing it from retreating back to Sonja's stronghold. After it is dealt with you can just block up the channel to prevent her sub from getting to your battleship. For the northern island you have a rocket and a md tank to deal with, getting in an early shot on the md tank makes this a cakewalk to deal with. Just make sure you don't stray too close to the south eastern part of the island where Sonja has a battleship. After taking control of the islands just reinforce with some infantry and stroll to victory."

Again, some neat play that, by S-Ranking the mission, ends up making a mockery of my own A-Rank run of this mission on NC (but who had the bigger mech flood? HAH! ;)). The strategy of just plain ignoring that defensive battleship thanks to Sami's superior capturing works really nicely for him. Here's hoping all goes well for him on Sonja's Goal (and possibly beyond?)

Advance Campaign Mission 12A: Naval Clash! AC as Andy (or "Pyrrhic S-Rank")

Youtube video
(13m42s)

Following the slog of Captain Drake!, we arrive at a mission that is short, easy to beat... and very, very painful. Joining me are Seraphroy and Sylphid.

As before, we've got to protect this entirely pointless missile launcher for 10 9 days (since Nell arrives at the start of Day 10). Straight away, even from the fogged map you can tell this is going to be even more painful than in NC. One battleship has become two battleships and a cruiser. Here's the completely unfogged map, if you're curious. Once again, images taken from Wars World News' map directory, with apologies to map compiler Sarumarine.

The most salient points of that unfogged map are a) Drake has a veritable, er, tsunami of botes coming in from the south and b) he's also thought to put a submarine in the north this time. Just one sub, though. Wouldn't want to go overboard or anything. This does mean that we're going to have to box a little more cleverly with our lander and northern sub, but that's about it.

First, let's get this missile launcher out of here.

Everyone else prepares for the worst.

Already the lander has fallen, taking the brunt of a bunch of battleship shots.

There goes one light tank. The sub nearly buys it too - I take revenge on the cruiser that assaulted it.

Drake pulls out a Tsunami...

... and proceeds to wipe out the rest of my land force :stare:. The battleship's nearly gone, too.

Well, let's see what we can do.

Answer: not very much. At least that northern sub has obligingly revealed itself.

I take out a chunk of it, while my lander sneaks past. I'm now just hoping against hope that the AI doesn't think to look in the reefs.

Drake's sub is still preoccupied with mine, though. At least I'm winning this battle...

... well, except for the bit where the cruiser wanders in and finishes my sub off.

That was day 7. The next few days are spent doing this. Of course, the AI being the AI, Drake decides to stop looking for my lander.

And we reach day 10 with the missile launcher somehow still intact.

"One more such victory would utterly undo me."
- Greek King Pyrrhus of Epirus, on his two victories against the Romans in 280 and 279BC.

Or in other words, an automatic S-Rank - because Advance Campaign doesn't care about such niceties as Power and Technique, and because the mission can only last ten days anyway. But a devastating experience nonetheless.

Since that was a pretty quick ride, I'm going to have a chat about the next mission - Wings of Victory! AC as Andy. As with Kanbei's Error?, it's a previously non-Fog-of-War map that's been converted to Fog of War for Advance Campaign. Remember another mission from Normal Campaign that used the same map as Andy's Wings of Victory!, but was in Fog of War with more enemy troops? Yep, Wings of Victory! NC as Sami. Let's defog the two maps and see what they look like under the bonnet:

Eagle gets one extra AA, a light tank converted to a medium tank, and a few units moved upfield slightly. That's pretty much it, other than our CO being Andy rather than Sami (with all the advantages/disadvantages that this brings). I'm not sure just how much this is going to screw me over just yet, but hey - I blundered my way through Wings of Victory! NC as Sami reasonably well. How much harder can this be?

Right? :ohdear:

(If you're curious, this is the crazy mess you get for AC as Sami).

Being a tad lazy and reposting this from the last update. This mission is crazily similar to its Sami NC counterpart. Pretty much the biggest difference between the two missions is that we're using Andy rather than Sami - and heck, that arguably makes things easier. Sami plan as with Sami NC - fighting off Eagle's initial air invasion, before dealing with his ground troops while sending a fighter and T-copter to the HQ.

Since this mission is so similar to the Sami NC version, I start with a similar cluster of units (heck, I was even reading over my own LP to check where everything was meant to go - recon in the forest, fighters, etc.

One of Eagles' fighters pokes its head round the door, and I manage to take it out. Naturally, this is a huge advantage that Andy has over Sami here - his direct combat units aren't carrying a nasty penalty, so we can two-shot an Eagle fighter rather than three-shot it. It's so nice to be able to do that here.

APC does some refuelling as it goes out on good ol' duty, while everything else clusters into the range shadow of the missile launcher, to ensure that Eagle can't park in there.

Two bombers, the other fighter and an AA. Nasty surprises all round.

But we're reasonably well-equipped to deal with them. First, the indirects get their fill (although Eagle's air defence bonus never makes this stuff easy...). Sadly, the recon fails to do chip damage and finish off that AA.

So I have to bring the medium tank forward for some crazy overkill. AA targets fighter, fighter targets bomber (as I mention in the video, generally best to attack things that can't counterattack you). I also pull back that 1HP fighter - it'll come in handy later.

Eagle doesn't take too kindly to my shenanigans.

And naturally, the APC falls to

Saved up my Hyper Repair for the counterattack here.

Once again, Eagle's terrible defence following a Lightning Strike proves his undoing. Life would be much harder here if we were facing, say, AWDS Eagle and that crazy, crazy Lightning Drive.

I felt really, really clever here that my hyper repair follwed by a join gave me one full-health fighter to work with... until Socker pointed out in the video that I could have used the 3HP fighter to kill that 2HP bomber instead this turn, and then joined the two planes next turn. Ultimately it doesn't change much, but still... :sigh:.

The next few turns are an exercise in problem solving as I wear down Eagle's attacks. First this medium tank...

... then this AA and mech.

... and now the light tank and medium tank. This time my recon's chip damage works out.

Time to start thinking about an HQ invasion.

As the air units head forward, I continue to battle infantry and send my medium tank, recon and missile launcher (because heck, why not) on a little forward sortie.

But am I pushing too far forward?

Yes, yes I am. The ultimate humiliation as Eagle spots my middie with one arty, while killing it with the other.

Once again I follow up Lightning Strike with Hyper Repair (thinking about it, I should have saved this up as an insurance policy for the HQ capture...)

Finding the bomber guarding Eagle's HQ (after screwing around a bit wasting fuel). But where's that missile launcher? And is there an AA lurking? :ohdear:. Oh well, at the end of the day at least I can use the T copter as bait.

Missile downs the T copter. I then waste a turn doing everything except start capturing that HQ. The mech sits there doing nothing, because I'm a scaredy-cat.

The next day I bite the bullet and just hope that there aren't any AA around...

... there aren't. Well then.

Let's not waste any more time.

Did that messing around cost me an A-Rank? Quite possibly. But it was a reasonably smooth ride - as might be expected from a mission that barely differs from one I've done before. Tune in next time, as we fight Drake for the third and final time - this time, with the advantage. Will I kill that lander fast enough to get an S-Rank? Only time will tell.
