I remember reading in the companion book to Restrepo that the dude's that took over the COP after 173rd left killed their dog they left. The cats and dogs that hung around the helo LZs at least made the wait for movement bearable.

At least some of 3rd ID kept COP pets. And then called for evac to KAF when they got bites and scratches. A few were some of the dumbest bastards I have ever met.

Yes indeed, from this my razor sharp mind can determine that US Navy ships have internal air ducts. They also appear to have either fire alarm panels or even (dare I say it?) some sort of fire suppressant system. Judging from the red lamp said system might even be incimical to human health when activated(!). Also they appear to mark their bulkheads with small signs at about eye height. This is probably to to identify said bulkhead if it moves about and is suddeny found in an unexpected location.

I just don't want them knowing where the coffee is if they gain access to the ship. I should edit that out.

This was my dad's ship, the USS America. He served most of his career on there, including Desert Storm/Shield. It's now sunken somewhere off the coast of Virginia, as they decommissioned it and used it for testing.

Thought I'd share a couple photos I found at the (British) National Archives. OK this doesn't look like much at first, just an aerial photograph of a ship at sea, but this was a shot taken in 1908 by a guy hanging in a basket from this thing: Yeah, that's just a bigass kite. The idea was to use it as a reconnaissance/fire control spotting platform. It worked reasonably well but by this time powered aircraft were on the verge of becoming useful for things besides hopping around fields and killing their pilots.

We had the coolest dog on our COP. His name was Rufus, he was as tall as a MATV tire. He would go out on patrol with us, even when we were mounted he would job along next to the trucks for the first 10km or so. Afghan dogs were generally pretty sweet.

We were on a night mission where we were responsible for part of the cordon. I'm chillin up in my hatch scanning my sector when I see a dog trot by not giving a gently caress with a human arm in his mouth. Poor dog.

I wonder what sort of Spanish shenanigans went on during their era as a naval power. I think we call the result "latin america" so pretty obviously something was up.

Police photographs of the manhunt and capture of the surviving Boston Bomber were leaked by a "State Police tactical photographer" to Boston Magazine in response to Rolling Stone's cover image. Pics are here http://imgur.com/a/yFRgC linked because some of them could be NWS, considering he's covered in blood. At least one of the shots of him sitting in the boat with the laser on his dome are going to join the company of Tienanmen Tank Man, the Kent State shooting, planes hitting the towers, etc, I bet.
