White Ghost Shivers

Wikipedia posted:

White Ghost Shivers is an eclectic American band based in Austin, Texas which claims cabaret, jazz, vaudeville, hokum, western swing, hillbilly, jugband and ragtime as its inspiration. The band has been declared "Best None of the Above" by the Austin Music Awards for 2005 and 2007.

I don't know enough to differentiate between those styles so I can't recommend a particular song, but they have four albums from which to choose something.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Austra's second LP "Olympia" yet.

This new album is much less dark and cold than the first one (even though i still think said first one is a blast), with some parts that really sound very 70es-inspired. Overall, the whole thing sounds more polished, but still retains that special coldwave thing they had on the first album.

Saw them in concert last month: they improved on-stage as well. Stelmanis' and the twins' voices are definitely more adjusted. Their choregraphy and gestures in general still make them look as if they were on mushrooms, though. That's a good thing, i guess.

drat good album this, though I was put off at first from the Fleet Foxes-esque singles, as I'd say they're actually pretty unrepresentative of the album as a whole.

I'm really bad at comparing bands, but I guess if you like Bon Iver you like well polished folk rock so maybe try Fleet Foxes or Iron and Wine's last 2 albums? There's also Justin Vernon's side projects, the Shouting Matches album is pretty dope if you like blues rock.

Has anyone else been following AlunaGeorge this year? They're maybe a little more indie R&B than indie pop, but each one of their singles is better than the last, and their album, Body Music, finally comes out next week. It's currently streaming on their site:

"You Know You Like It" and "Attracting Flies" are my favorites, but the whole thing's pretty consistent from end to end. I'm excited to see if their live show is equally as great later this fall.

I can really recommend Fleet Foxes and everything they've done on the basis that they're my favourite band of all time, but you also might wanna check out Father John Misty, their ex-drummer and former boring singer-songwriter Josh Tillman's band. Their debut, Fear Fun was probably my favourite album of last year. I can also recommend Lord Huron who's really good at creating evocative, western sounding folk music and a ton of songs about traveling places.

Edit: Actually, make 2 lists. a 2013 list and an "all-time" list.

and here's my ongoing best of 2013 playlist for reference, I'd just make it collaborative except I prefer to keep it a collection of songs I personally like and also it's maybe 5% not-Indie.

J. Roddy Walston and the Business are releasing their third album ("Essential Tremors") in about six weeks. If you've never heard of these guys, you're missing out. Here's what NPR has to say about them:

NPR's World Cafe posted:

The quartet stomped through the world head on, with smirks on their faces and a fist-pumping attitude. Their infectiously rugged southern rock 'n' roll, laden with repetitive hooks, praises rock in its purest form. With their bluesy chord progressions, distorted guitars and those grizzly vocals, J-Roddy Walston and The Business has the gritty air of Kings of Leon circa 2003 mixed with uplifting choral anthems a la Dr. Dog.

The tunes are good on your car speakers or your home system. They're even better live:

RedEye Chicago posted:

And I thought I picked a needle in a haystack when selecting J. Roddy Walston and the Business as my favorite show at Lollapalooza 2011.

Clearly the needle has pricked some others. At a sold out Double Door Friday, the Baltimore boogie-rock quartet had a packed house singing along frequently--especially joining in on the band's fantastic "oohs" and "aahs" that anchor blistering songs that sometimes sound as if Kings of Leon indulged a Little Richard phase. In fact, Walston makes Richard's "Lucille" sound like an original, and, packed between howling renditions of favorites like "Full Growing Man," "Brave Man's Death" and the blazing closer "Used to Did," new songs from a forthcoming album didn't lose a step from material off the band's self-titled record. Walston neglected to share titles of the new stuff, but one that followed him requesting that the crowd dance could inspire a revival of the twist, as long as people don't mind breaking their ankles.

Once again, a great set of great songs from a great live band. This Business--and its frontman's awesome wail that emerges from a wild, flailing head of hair--has legs. Invest now.

Antimusic posted:

The world is full of experiences that must be seen in the flesh where no picture, film or story can measure up to. The Sistine Chapel, the Grand Canyon, the Great Wall of China and while we're at it, let's add seeing J Roddy Walston and the Business to that list. OK, I know what you're thinking; "Here's some writer looking to over praise some unworthy indie band". Just because they may be indie doesn't mean they are undeserving of the praise I am about to bestow. The scruffy yet jubilant foursome have a brand new self-titled record in stores and while it's loud enough to make the needle on your record player skip, it's the hair swirling live experience that burns into your brain. The live show is downright riveting and if you believe in the sheer power of the live experience, then put J Roddy on your bucket list; it's akin to an intimate encounter you can't wipe from your mind. The sweat, closeness, smells, surprises and ultimately the release are the same except one takes place with your clothes on. As I recently watched J Roddy and the Business at the Double Door in Chicago, the scent, sweat and feeling of frenzied physicality were all on hand. In a rare feat, J Roddy and the Business executed all of this being an opening act for not just one but two other acts. The venue had room to move when they opened with their Jimmy Miller Stones like "Don't Break the Needle", but by the final wailing notes 45-minutes later, the crowd was drenched in a spiritual and sexual transformation where their eyes bulged, they pulled themselves off the ground, headed for the bar to quench their thirst and to the smoking areas to ponder the musical climax that just occurred.

Culturemap Austin posted:

J. Roddy Walston is a hurricane of hair and hands. He's playing with urgency and head-banging so hard the fans on the balcony are feeling a steady breeze. He's sporting an early 90's Seattle look: lengthy locks, flannel and plenty of scruff. And his quartet's sound is equally rugged, equal parts southern rock, electrified honky tonk and parlorhouse piano on crack.

It's tough to doubt his courage on this rainy ACL set. He shrieks like Steve Perry without blowing a gasket and he's not only covered Little Richard, but sped him up and dressed him in highly amplified garage rock. J. Roddy and his band the Business take nothing lightly. Every track of their explosive set is—to get lost in metaphor—shoved into a roadhouse, force-fed a shot of whisky and told to fight the nearest guy to the jukebox.

The band is touring through early November and is hitting pretty much every corner of the country. They've also released the first single for free dowwnload. If you've ever remotely enjoyed a single loud rock song, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
