Something about this feels kinda hinky

http://www.sixfeatsunder.com/

Hello and welcome to Let's Play The 13th Age! This campaign started as spinoff material from the LPDND thread and now it's out on its own and ready for action. The 13th Age is a new d20-based RPG developed by Fire Opal Media and published by Pelgrane press. Specifically, it comes from Jonathon Tweet and Rob Heinsoo, lead designers on the 3rd and 4th editions of D&D respectively. It combines a streamlined tactical combat engine with freeform story elements from more modern designs. This campaign started during early playtesting, and continued through the development of the game. Now we're using the final text and books are shipping to pre-orderers as we speak. The core book is meant to hit shelves August 5 and there are plans for organized play starting that very week if you want a piece of the action. You can learn more on the Pelgrane website or our own Trad Games thread.

We started this as audio-only, and we can't go back in time to change that. We're recording video now and going forward so don't sweat it too much. The older podcasts will also be slowly added to our Youtube account so you can find all the content in one place and playlist. We play every other week (for now) and will try to update regularly. A game is nothing without it's characters, so let's meet our merry band: The Rogue Elements! click for more info

You know them better as A Wooden Palisade, PoorWeather, Medibot, Ambisagrus, Plasmaman, Drakkel, and Wolfshirt. I'll be your friendly GM this evening, so let's play!

As mentioned above this thread is for a campaign already in progress. All previous sessions are available for listening/viewing but we understand if you want to skip right to the new stuff. This recap is for you, broken into parts for your convenience. Sessions 1-20:

Our party met each other near Boltstrike Pillar where they were hired to bring the betrayer Zvegdar to justice after he crumbled the pillar and gave its storm magic to a blue dragon. After defeating Zvegdar, Bryde and Kalin left the group and Mint fell from the sky. They attempted to track the dragon but all boats were headed to Axis for the new Emperor's inauguration. On the way Margaret destroyed a squid beast by firing a ship's mast at it like an arrow, but not before it ate Nav's cat Agatha. They took part in the imperial bloodsports and won fame and fortune. Meanwhile they found themselves in the Enclave, a secret meeting of representatives of the world's least evil powers. There they learned of a mysterious, impending doom and some plans to end it, but nobody seemed to have a real handle on the situation.

The party decided to seek unknown knowledge in the oracle of the God of Secrets, Wu-Tang. RIP SMOULDERBOULDER got the party a ride on the Crusader's Battle Barge, a flying battleship. It crashed and the party set out for Santa Cora on foot where they met an imperial military camp and a thief camp. As the groups stabbed each other, Nav nabbed some cool knives. In Santa Cora the party explored Cathedral and found the shrine of Wu-Tang. Kalin was serving there, and let the group in. Wu-Tang revealed the full list of 'keys' needed to avert disaster, and it's cause: the Great Gold Wyrm has been dead for about 60 years, and unless he is raised soon an unending stream of demons will devour the world. Before leaving, they stole the cornerstone of Cathedral and its living architecture came to a halt.

After their escape, a party of sailors found our heroes and insisted Margaret is their captain. With the crew, the party defeated a pirate ship and sold it for profit. They took longboats upriver into the Wild Wood and intervened in a ritual to empower forest warriors against the Empire. They received the First Leaf of Spring in exchange for RIP SMOULDERBOULDER'S left hand. He now uses a prosthetic made of Bella's sound magic. Further south they boarded Small Rigby, a Koru Behemoth. A village on its back was led by Groat Ungren, a druid in service to the Diabolist who years ago gave Bella her childhood curse. He was defeated at the same time that a hellhole erupted beneath Rigby, shattering one of its rear legs as the party fell into the hole.

This next part is for 21-30:

The hellhole was controlled by the greed demon Mammon who wanted to pass it off to a subordinate. The party got hired by one to make him look good, but instead rigged the joint so they won nearly everything. Mammon was forced to bet the hellhole's core in a high stakes game, and he lost. They used it to pilot the whole core into the sea, flooding it as they escaped. They were pulled onto shore by Margaret's sister-in-law, Larette Stone, an agent of the Committee for the Reclamation of Emergent Alchemies and Magics, who captured and studied Bella years ago. The Rogue Elements reject her offer and sneak into Drakkenhall, where they make better friends and steal the Scales of the Three, throwing their tense alliance into chaos. However, their lieutenants live to antagonize again.

And sessions 31-45:

The elf woods are strange, but home to an old friend. Bryde Wilestar has her own problems, but gives the party a leg up in petitioning the Queen's Court. After earning an audience by defeating a flaming basilisk, they fall into court intrigue. Their petition to enter the original Orc Lord's tomb was granted, along with other decisions that have shaped the Empire since. The tomb lied in the depths of Equinox Manor, a terribly haunted ruin. This is where Manuel, the only civilized gnoll, offered his services as guide and hunter. By defeating the naga in its depths Bella became master of Equinox, and stayed there to exorcise it as the rest of the party moved on. The party found Moonwatch, where Mint tried reconnecting with The Project and was charged with murder and captured by Associate Director Peppercorn. The rescue went south, and the de-braining of the entire party was narrowly avoided by Bella's arrival in her new role as diplomat.

On a long overland journey word reached the party that either the Diabolist or the Crusader died at the hands of the other. The hidden hamlet of Misty Hill was home to a case of mistaken identity, but showed a secret way into the Undermarch. The cavernous bridge of Undermarch was nearly crumbled by fallen angels gone mad, until the Rogue Elements defeated them and recovered their relic for Misty Hill. After being held up in very different ways by Forge immigration, the party split up in search of the Soul of Stone. Manuel must deal with blackmail from former clients, Bella investigates a conspiracy, Nav becomes champion of the underclass, Mint goes furniture shopping, RIP works to clear the name of his family, as Margaret and Scarlett dive into the mystery of the Soul of Stone. All these come to a head in the middle of a Battle of the Bands and with the aid of the party's friends and family. Victory is short-lived as an army marching under Corson (first seen in Mammon's hellhole) is about to strike Forge! After repelling the siege the Dwarf King reveals he is the Soul of Stone himself, and pledges his assistance when it is most needed.

Meanwhile Margaret's ship has been captured, and all but one of her crew killed, by the Red Fang. They immediately leave for Disney's Land to rescue Audriel. The Red Fang is defeated in front of an audience made of everyone the party has ever defeated or wronged. Humbled and terrified, he reveals he was hired by Nikud Adler, architect of Cathedral.

Sessions 46-62:

After learning of Adler's involvement and seeing what he had done, Nav leaves the party to follow his own path. After a long trek back home to Equinox, the other Elements take a rest as they manage their home and build a flying BATTLEVAN. They set to the skies to retrieve the Cog of Regulus from its friendly but determined protectors. On Regulus they find Slots, a new and perplexing ally. Falling from the Overworld, they are ambushed by Imugi the Empyrean dragon and defeat it, after the collected keys fall into the soft marsh below. Investigating what that may have caused, they come upon a town under the thrall of Imugi that they accidentally liberated.

Downriver, the reviving powers of the keys mingled with the last remains of the River Devil to forge a new generation of sea beasts which our heroes struck down once again. From there, they journeyed to the Northern Colossus. At its feet lay a nomadic village and the wizened elf Merrick Kane who guided their climb up the massive stone warrior. Before reaching its feet a dark, ruthless mirror of the team appeared. The heroes victory proved that they are able to overcome their cruel impulses and will use the Colossus for good. As the Colossus stands and stretches, Regulus' replacement cog gives out and it lands in the Colossus' hands, safe and sound.

Hearing rumors of unrest from her brother, Scarlett points the party to her ancestral home of Eridu. On the way, a rampaging Tarrasque was threatening a nearby city and a daring three-pronged plan sealed it away in the hellhole the party schemed from Mammon long ago. The Dragonspawn city was seeking independence in some form, and suffering Imperial retribution for it. As she connected with her grandmother, the party's usual machinations won it independence through a loophole. At the same moment, the Abyss opened up and revealed the newest threat to the delicate balance: The Lord of Devils has arisen to wage war against the world above.

From there, the crew set off for Concord to look for a way into the secret CREAM facility on the island of Omen. On the way, Slots went dormant once more and we all learned about Bella's performing past. Sailing toward Omen with forged work documents the party was boarded by a ship of the damned captained by their old friend Nav! He shared the tale of how he had been working to cast the Lich King off the throne of Necropolis and took his place. The original team reunited, they delved into Omen's maze of dead dungeons to find CREAM's back door. Inside Omen they met S.U.S.A.N., matriarch of the remaining snakepeople, and freed her. Larette used her research into Bella's abilities to fool the party with a wide illusion, but they turned it against her and routed the base's defense. Unfortunately, they weren't the only people seeking the Pearl, and Mako's mer-army had already made off with it.

Sessions 63-71:

The attacks on the CREAM blacksite triggered its fail-safe, transporting everyone to a pocket dimension networked to all CREAM facilities. By combining their efforts, the Elements leave before the all-clear and see the unending storm that resulted from the loss of the Pearl. They respond to Mako's invitation and arrive at her rowdy as hell victory banquet and steal the Pearl from the merpeople that stole it just before. Mako lets them off easy, knowing the party is a bigger threat to normal life in the Empire than she has been so far. As threats to Nav's claim on the Lich throne come forward, they once again head home to Equinox to prepare for collecting the final keys. All is not peaceful, as Corson's persistent army sees Equinox as a possible wedge to break open the Queen's woods. Their deceivers defeated, the party travels to court again to pay respects to Ambassador Mulberry, Bella's ally in untwisting the Elf Queen's machinations. A seance in his old office sheds more light on the dangers of diplomacy, and then it is on to Shadowport to seek Nikud Adler and the Hand of Death he stole. Nikud is preaching a new gospel of the Almighty Gold Piece, and has brought devil servants to the powerful companies of Glitterhagen. The Many joins the party after Nav revives them on Neropolis. Nikud's new powers allow him to forge the entire city into a single Golem: The Plutocracy! Nav's own experiment, Necropolitan 13, grapples with it and overcomes as the party finds that Nikud has been an unwitting vessel of the resurrected Wizard King. He dies, again.

Sessions 72-84:

As they seek the next keys, our heroes instead find Bella's mother Coloratura and help her uncover lost Elven secrets that shed more light on Bella's musical curse. They return home to Equinox, and defend it one last time from The Final Devil, the River Devil's most powerful form. Word from their sometime ally Mako, the undersea princess, suggests the Original Scroll of Resurrection is actually famed actor Claude Luminor and she last saw him in Horizon. The wizard city is a ghost town. Claude isn't there, but they find a power source for their upcoming Moon flight. Claude's trail leads to an Orcish war camp, where they find the departed and dormant Slots, and the Hell Marsh, where Mint learns some things and The Many absorbs a giant worm. They track him down in the theaters of a changed Axis, and free him from the mystical exploitation of scheming manager Gersh Capa (his 'friend' Debentiel in disguise). As the world erupts in a four-fold apocalypse, the Rogue Elements blast off to the moon. They recover the Heart, which reveals new truths to both Mint and Bella. Returning to the surface, they see how far gone the world is, and wonder just how much there is left to save.

But enough of the past. New thread means new content! For your patience here's a double-dose of 13th Age from deep in the belly of a hellhole:

Has the 13th Age campaign gone up on iTunes like the D&D one has? I enjoyed listening to the latter on my way to and from work, you see.

Can't wait to see what else these guys 'n gals are going to get up to. Really, this whole system is great for doing crazy things; I've been playing it myself with some other goons, and I really can't recommend it enough to anyone who listens in. If you can get a group together, get this game and play it.

A fantastic thread title as always. :allears:
I was sold on 13th Age from the first playtest session, but I think the Stick-It episode was when I fell in love.
Also, I really dig those those character portraits/descriptions.

It's not on the iTunes directory, but I maintain a feed for it here. You can add it to iTunes via File -> Subscribe to Podcast and pasting the link in.

And thanks a million for doing that. My big project tomorrow is copying over and reorganizing the table of contents from the old thread. In the meantime, anyone can find previous sessions in this post here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3467826&pagenumber=76#post411314686

Also if I missed anyone's fanart please let me know and I'll slap it up there for the world to see.

Last time I checked, it is in the Zune/Xbox directory, and the Bella Canto icon is pretty snazzy.

Nice to see you guys get your own thread. It was a bit of a head-gently caress at first listening to some people play different characters than I was used to, but after Axis it all really clicked for me and it's been a great ride.

You're probably talking about these early designs. The bug theme was a cool unifying factor but characters change as you play them and the new designs fit them much better. Scarlett is the first example of the new 'Drakksploitation' genre. Speaking of old things made new, here's Bryde and Kalin (Ally and Syrg) from the playtest sessions brought into the new design scheme:

Actually I've got an even older version of that one. Mint and Nav don't even exist on mine. Kind of prefer old version of Bryde (like the long hair look) but new one's also pretty neat.

I... I have no idea how it's in the Zune directory, I didn't put it there. The Bella pic I just snagged from Plaz's tumblr because I got tired of there not being any art for the feed on my phone -- if anyone wants to make actual cover art for it, I'll be happy to add that.

Not so much "for this thread" as for Ambisagrus' birthday, but we'll take it either way. And here's a reminder that there's a Q&A thread for the designers of the game going right now, and Rob Heinsoo has already begun Aing some of the Qs: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3561616

Aspects of the Age: One Unique Thing

So far, we've been mentioning how this game does new things and incorporates new ideas into the D&D mold, but haven't gone into any specifics. This is the first in a short series highlighting the rules of The 13th Age and how they support a more personalized, character-driven style of play. I've decided to start with the thing that inspired our thread's title: the One Unique Thing.

When making a character you have the familiar steps of choosing your race and class, assigning your Ability Scores those familiar things. You also choose One Unique Thing, your PC's hallmark that sets them apart from any old fella with a sword. They can be fantastic or mundane, world-shaking or personal, secret or extroverted, familiar or bizarre. It's entirely up to you. The One Unique Thing is not meant to bring a mechanical advantage, but instead to develop the world around you. Just from our party's OUTs and nothing else we know the Elves have a lunar exploration program, adherents of the Great Gold Wyrm fiercely believe portents, and there is an anger from deep in Dwarven history that they still fear; and that's not even the half of it.

It also makes you notable. Even if your Thing is as simple as being the karaoke champion of Concord somebody in the setting will know and care, at least the runner-up will. In this way, it also helps develop your backstory which is useful for choosing interesting backgrounds, but that's for another post. I like One Unique Things for how they provide focus to a character that isn't quite made yet. Nav is a construct of the Lich King's war effort against the living who deserted out of an appreciation for the finer things. That's a whole character in a sentence. It grew from the OUT and informs his powers, backgrounds, and flavor.

From the early stages of character creation we have a world with texture and flavor, and it came from the players themselves. I love collaborative efforts and having a stake in the world-building increases investment, so it gives me a little more leeway to pull whatever I think of. That collaborative aspect also helps seed plot hooks (how about that Groat Ungren guy) and signpost what the players want from their game. When I got the OUTs "Only half-elf born in a mixed marriage" and "Only elf raised by humans" it told me at least one-third of the players wanted a game where the family structures and mores of Elves were a thing that would matter.

Really, it's there to point out that every adventurer is exceptional, at least in some tiny way. Every game has them wind up that exceptional, but starting out as something special helps develop characters faster, and get you into how they think without those first few sessions of adjustment. It can even make PCs more relatable in a sense. Don't we all have that one thing we hang our hats on? Like the best of 13th Age's additions to the d20 formula, the One Unique Thing takes something that may already happen at plenty of tables, and presents it in a way to be used to its greatest effect in every campaign.

How do you feel it compares to, say, the completely player-driven approach that Dungeon World provides? Is it an improvement over even 13th Age's approach for those who'd enjoy that sort of thing, or do you feel it might be too far in the free-form direction - where it could be better suited having constant, concrete things like the Icons?

Short answer: Dungeon World is perfect for Dungeon World, but 13A's systems for player involvement are better suited to the d20 system. Everyone should at least try Dungeon World at least once, it's such a good game.

You could try loading them up in Chrome, or just switch to iTunes yeah.

Basically half the job I have now is telling people over the phone to try using Chrome when IE inevitably isn't working for them.
