INCREDIBLE
Suzaku recognizes Heero and that one guy who was with Relena that one time. Setsuna runs up and tells Suzaku he won't let him lay a hand on Heero. :3:

Setsuna has, in fact, actually been ordered by Sumeragi to escort Suzaku, though he suspects it's not going to be necessary. How come, Setsuna?

Because the "public GOONZ" are swarming all over the newbie, of course! Alto, in particular, is very glad to have someone to lord over. Gainer remembers what that was like, having a little mentee to help out. Kind of like Kamina and Simon. Shinn remembers the time Gainer made a strategy out of yelling all his thoughts at the enemy - looks like Gainer's a lot more like Kamina than he looks! Or is he? What Gainer had to yell was his love! Eureka and Renton go bright red.

Suzaku, watching quietly, is amazed at the diversity GOONZ has to show: the Japanese, the Frontier-ians, and even ZEUTH. Shinn expects Suzaku to do his part to get along, forgetting that he was the loner in ZEUTH for a while too. But the point stands: terrorists aside, GOONZ is a big happy family of trust, and Suzaku is part of it now. They'll even try to help smooth things over with him and Karen. Chattering, all the new friends wander off...

So this is what you meant?
This team contains many annoyances.
...
...
...very few people are coming to the hangar today.
They're taking turns in the sick bay.
I see. Crowe is awake?

Crowe is indeed awake, and his current guests are 21st and Takeo. Aoyama sympathizes with his bad luck, though this was even worse than usual by a mile. Ibuki asks after his sponsors, but all they care about is his combat data. Speaking of which, Crowe didn't realize at the time, but he could get docked for that damage. What he wouldn't do for his freedom... but that's why he's working so hard to get his debt out of the way. That, and saving the world.

(Ikue offers him a snack, and he quips that he'd be lot less grumpy if every girl was like her. This sends all the OLs a-titter with indignance.)

The bad news is that we don't have the resources to repair the Brasta. However, Elgan's recalled GOONZ, so they're heading to the Union anyway, meaning they can pass by Traia's lab and turn it in to her. Speaking of which, GOONZ has never seen Crowe's boss. "Is she pretty?" asks Aoyama (of course it's Aoyama). Crowe can't deny it, but...

Crowe!
Sorry, chief. I screwed up.
You jerk.
Chief?
You huge stupid jerk!
You stupid, worthless, lazy, idiotic, talentless, lame, poor, arrogant, unreliable...
Uh...
What did you do to my Brasta! You know what I'm going to do to you, Crowe?
Yeah, there it is.
Good thing I came by myself so they don't have to see my "pretty" boss like this.
Oh goodness, I... oh, you!
Is that what you wanted? I'm not going to fall for that!
Fine....

But boy, the place looks deserted. Traia says people don't really come in to work anymore with the world so unstable and a lot of factors gunning for Axion's head. What, so they've been attacked and the workers fled? Goodness no, says Traia. All she did was put up a maser barrier, and activate some death nanobots, and release some guard genetic experiments, and that's when everyone left. Weird, right?

Traia, on the other hand, still wants to see the Brasta perfected, and especially to crack the mystery of the VX and shove it in Carlos Axion's face. She's not going anywhere, and she honestly prefers it when no one's there to bug her.

And Esther, then? Esther is doing much better, to the point where she's Traia's new assistant. On the other hand, she's madder than ever, and she refuses to come out to see Crowe.

Oh, and Crowe's debt is cancelled! His last batch of data came out to 500,000, leaving him free man with a hundred grand to his name. Oddly, Crowe isn't happy, and grimly tells Traia to shut it down. Traia sighs and admits he's right. However much she wants to do science, and however much Esther wants her revenge, they just don't have the funds to keep it going.

So Crowe offers his money (!), and goes off to meet Esther. What's so special about her? It's not like Crowe's cooled on women in general. "Prometheus Experiment!" cries Traia, suddenly, and Crowe stops in his tracks. Well then. Is he trying to make up for that? "Maybe," says Crowe, cagily.

That satisfies Traia, then. She's on the Brasta job.

When Crowe gets to Esther's room, she starts yelling at him and calling him a liar. He's got no argument for that: he hasn't kept his promise, and he has nothing to say until he does. Esther's sort of impressed - she expected him to give up when MD became backed by the Imperium. She knows herself that she should be mad at the Imperium, not at MD.

"Okay, fine," sighs Crowe. "In exchange for an extension, I'll teach you a spell." He takes a breath. "'So what?'" A simple spell that enables you to get past any trouble no matter how hard it looks. Whether it's the Imperium or anything else that bugs her. Just say "so what?"

"How is that going to help? Do you know what you're up against? They just destroyed an entire country!"

"So what?"

That just makes Esther madder, but Crowe says he doesn't care what she says. "I'll do my job my way, but I will keep my promise. It's one of my principles."

Then the alarm rings, and Crowe remembers the downside of coming out alone...

Chapter 30: Straight Fulcrum

Hey, this jerk is here.

But so are Pearlnail, MD, and a bunch of Damons.

Crowe's headed out in the only machine he could find worth piloting. Traia tells him to be careful with it. It's her custom Axio Scott SP VR Max. The machine is still junk, but as much as Marguerite wanted to have a proper duel, she can't afford to show mercy. "You don't have to go," she tells MD. "I'll handle him." Of course, it doesn't respond. "But I'll still protect you."

The Axio has the same upgrades as the Brasta, but it's still a piece of crap. We can charge at MD, or wait it out.

Screw it!

This also has the advantage of getting a few Damons into scrapes.

No seriously though the Axio is a piece of poo poo and has no chance taking on MD one on one even at this level of upgrading.

(Crowe Brust... I have no enmity or hatred towards you personally.)
(But I must have your life... to defend the one thing I have left.)

Or Pearlnail, for that matter.

Crowe manages to survive to turn 3, but can tell he's outmatched in the Axio Scott... whatever. Luckily, the Brasta's been patched up well enough to fight...

but Marguerite won't let him reach the base.

Esther volunteers to go out herself in the Brasta,

but Crowe stops her. Does she want to die? Because he doesn't what her to die. "Do you know how terrible it is to die and leave behind people who didn't want you to?" Esther sobs. "Look, don't worry about it," says Crowe gently. "Your heart's in the right place, that's good enough for me."

Marguerite is waiting for Crowe to switch mecha so she can duel him fair and square, but...

Ime is very disappointed in Marguerite, but knows he should have seen it coming. Crowe spits that Ime isn't willing to get his own hands dirty, but Ime just says, again, that Crowe is not worth being killed by himself. "All I need is results. The world will be safe if you are dead. Marguerite, kill him before he can enter the Brasta."

Marguerite starts, but Crowe reminds her that she is not the kind of warrior who can kill an unarmed man in cold blood. She sputters that she's a soldier of the Imperium, but Crowe also has no interest in fighting if she's trying so hard to convince hersef. So Marguerite puts it all on the table - if he doesn't surrender and accept his death, she'll shoot the girl.

You want me to weigh my life against Esther's?
Crowe, forget about me! Get out of here!
...
Choose! I mean it!
My life or someone else's? That's an easy answer.
I go to whatever rear end in a top hat is making me choose and beat their face in!

[IMG]http://lpix.org/1349539/20130729165821.avi_snapshot_00.01_[2013.07.29_20.58.08].jpg[/IMG]

!
What was that?
Did the VX just activate?
Now! Switch with me, Esther!
Ime! I'm coming for you!
Marguerite!
Yes! I must...

[IMG]http://lpix.org/1349540/20130729165821.avi_snapshot_00.09_[2013.07.29_20.58.48].jpg[/IMG]

Stay outta my way!
Now! SPIGOTs, deploy!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciQD_DPYDzw

Marguerite is reeling, and suddenly, MD comes to her aid.

Ime demands she retreat, and when she refuses, goes bugnuts. "The rain of light shatters pure! Flowers fall and the ocean burns! The night the galaxy weeps! For the countless blue drops in the box! This is the end of man's nightmare!" Pearlnail vanishes and Ime looks smug. What just happened? "That is my power," he explains very helpfully. "Much like your fulcrum did not break, even as your scales wavered. You are, at last, worth my time to kill!"

He pulls Arietes back and summons more Damons...

But GOONZ has arrived too! (In the Gekko, but it can't all be perfect.) Just this once, I've filled the ranks with ZEUTH so they can butt heads with the False Black Sheep. They do, after all, need him to get back to their world. Holland too, has something he wants out of Ime, but screw him.

As for Crowe, he has his eyes on the prize of MD's head, and Traia explains the new tool he has to do it: the SPIGOTs, independent machines that control and channel the energy of the VX system. With them online, Crowe can push the VX to its full output and vent the excess energy into an attack without the core melting down. Ime is mad as hell that Crowe isn't coming for him directly, but that's what Crowe's team is for - he has a promise to keep, and with the complete Brasta at his disposal, now's the time to keep it!

As usual, the stage goal is completely contradictory to Crowe's actual motivation - he (or ZEUTH, at least) needs to destroy Arietes, who retreats at 10,000 HP, before MD, since destroying MD ends the stage. Although, since Crowe is one of the strongest supporters on the field, he may not actually take Ime down personally.

Oh, and one more thing - just for once, Crowe's Will has been jacked up to 200, a figure that is normally reserved for His Badassitude Kamina.

MD... it's finally time to end this.
It's not going to change the world one bit... but once you're gone, someone's going to be able to take another step forward.
Not that there's any point telling you, I guess.
Only one of our sides is going to come out of this alive... it's either you or us!

Good to have you back, partner.

Ime is likely to gun for Crowe, so ZEUTH is in position to intercept him, and then bring the heat down on MD.

Next turn. Time to start the party.

Oh, poo poo. This is gonna be rough on the SP.

A Singularity among Singularities. It is truly an honor to meet one so rich in the taiji.
So we are here because we all became Singularities!
Now why don't you tell us how we get back?
That is impossible. Your world has already been destroyed.
Not buying it. We have people waiting for us back home! We're getting back there no matter what!

Okay, that won't do. ZEUTH needs to build its morale up a bit.

MD guns for Crowe, so the two have been skirmishing. MD's side of this battle is going to be easy. Ime, on the other hand...

Crowe Brust, we meet at last.
You are one creepy dude! Stalking me around, first you don't need me, then you do...
Let me make myself clear. I want your life...
Sorry, but it's my life and I'm keeping it! You're not getting it for all the money in the world!

Whew.

Okay, let's try this again.

What is he? He's like looking into a black pit...
Asakim wasn't like this... is this his malice?
A Newtype, trying to touch my soul. You must be punished for your transgression.

Ime Liard! Tell us how to get back to our own world!
There's no need for that. Your sister is alive in this one.
Mayu is... alive...
Heh... ha ha ha! A great reaction! A perfect reaction!
You... were lying to me?
What if I was?
drat you! Even to get me off guard, that was too low!

(By the way, in his battle dialogue, Ime tells the members of ZEUTH that working for him is their only hope of returning to their world. Not that it works, but he tries.)

There you are, Ime Liard! Tell us how to get back to our own universe!
Why does one universe matter out of the whole of the cosmos?
No duh! That's where my mom and dad and all my friends are probably worried sick!
If you won't tell us, we'll just have to make you!

(Oh, and I have to note this one here: "Calling yourself 'Invincible.' How arrogant.")

So... Kappei didn't get a counterattack. Why?

Well, The End of Merciless has just grown a status effect since last we fought Arietes. Specifically, the single worst status effect in the game, Immobilize, which makes any robot it hits a sitting duck for the whole rest of the turn - unable to attack or even take defensive actions, and when it hits before the enemy's attack, even negates their counterattack. The only time we've seen it is with Ali al-Sachez' Agrissa, but Ime's is much more spammable and he's far better at Countering. Arietes hoses super robots specifically, since they're less likely able to dodge, use Alert, or outrange the attack.

So basically, gently caress.

Ah, an early model of Overman. I've never fought one before.
You know King Gainer?
Why, of course. I constructed your Overman myself.
Huh?
A good reaction. And your hesitation has opened you up to attack.

Roger Smith. It's not too late, you know. Join me again.
Together, we can unravel the mysteries of the taiji.
You really can't think of any way to treat people other than by manipulating them.
I can't suffer you to even say the word "sincerity," so close to my heart! You and I are like water and oil!

Uh, that's pretty much all he'll take, so I'm gonna fake the rest again.

I can't even imagine I could get to like you!
Even if I told you I was the reincarnation of your late father?
Wait, what?
Ha ha ha. An excellent reaction. I see your father has a great influence on you.
drat it! You tricked me!
It was quite simple. I do like people like you.

You want to return to your world? Then why not join the Imperium?
...
It was an accident that you came here. We will return you as quickly as is in our power.
Don't listen to him, Touga. We can't trust this guy.
Sandman told me not to trust anyone who comes with sweet words.
Oh, goodness. Lessons from Confucius.
That's what my gut says, too! This guy is bad to the bone!
We will defeat you! Not only to return to our world, but to rid this one of evil!

We've got you now, Ime Liard! You're not getting away this time!
Join me and I will show you the way home.
Sorry, not happening! I've fought people like you before!
I don't trust any of you one bit! We're enemies here!
Stupid child. You must receive your punishment.

Only three wasted. Not bad, False Black Sheep, but it's time for the finish.

You really, really stink.
Do you mean that you can tell how dangerous I am?
If you won't believe my lies, I must destroy you as quickly as possible.
And you think I'm just gonna lie down and take it? I'm gonna wipe away your stink!

Oh, so Apollo's Spirit Block prevents him from being Immobilized by Ime's attack. A few other pilots, notably Takeru, have the same thing.

Ime seems smug, if anything. Crowe has awakened, and he's confident he can kill him easily anyway. But for now, he's out. "We'll pick this up when next we meet, Crowe Brust. Or should I say, Wavering Scales."

Anyway, the other Damons are not much of a concern, so we're just going to take MD down now.

Crowe loots its DM Radar (+20% crit, +1 range).

Oh, there is one last thing...

Eep! That white mech's pilot is...
You... my former debtor!
So you're piloting that machine to work your way out of debt?
Not anymore. I'm flying on the wings of freedom.
Good for you. And it must be fate that brought us together. This is my thanks for before.

Zennitori's gift is a Super Repair Kit, which is a 1/map complete restoration - HP, EN, and ammo.

Are you sure?
Don't worry about it. I took it as collateral, but I'll just say it broke in the confusion.
Thanks, buddy. It's my principle to take anything if it's given free.
Oh, it's not free. I want you to keep busting all those Damons.
Can do. I've got a new lease on life.

But more importantly, Crowe has finally kept his promise. He's almost a little sad to see his longtime rival go, but that's life. Traia, however, has something important she needs to tell him with regards to the VX. As the rest of GOONZ packs off to the U. N., Crowe wonders what he'll do with his newfound freedom...

But Ime Liard isn't the only one out for his head. "Your soul will not be claimed by the False Black Sheep, but by me, Asakim Douwin."

Traia's news is that while the SPIGOTs did their job and pushed the Brasta past its theoretical limits, the VX was not activated by any outside control. How do you explain the SPIGOTs just now, then? "Maybe the force of your righteous fury awakened the VX from its slumber!" giggles Traia. But she's only half joking - she has no better serious explanation. Maybe the VX has some sort of psychic interface. It's not out of the question - the HRL has been working on something like that. Whatever it is, it happened, and Crowe may as well take advantage of it.

There are other reasons than pure science for Traia to keep working on the machine, too. We may have put down MD, but we know there are bigger, badder DAMons out there. Well, then, Crowe... will carry on as the test pilot! He's choosing this path of his own free will.

"Your own free will? When did you get your hands on that?"

Crowe's debt has rocketed back up to 1,990,000 G!

Traia's charging him for all the work she did on the Brasta after all. He did say she could use his money, and it came to 2 mil, short the 10,000 he was left with.

Actually, that's not true. Esther promised him 10 Gs for taking down Rhinodamon MD, so that gets taken off the tab too.

Wha... what can I say?
If you're not gonna talk, I will.
Uh... thanks.
Wow, that's...
Shut up and listen, okay?
Yes'm!
I... um... I'd given up...
On MD, and on just living...
You saved me. You look like you're always going back and forth, but you're really perfectly steady.
You're the best. I...
No, I...
I said shut up! I'll kill you!
Ee!
Thank you, Crowe... I... I can keep going now.
Done! You can talk now!
Man, first I'm at a loss for words, then I can't say what I want to...
Esther... now that MD's gone, what's your plan?
I don't know. If it's okay with the chief, I want to keep working here.
You're free to, Esther. I know I could use a hand.
Really?
I can't pay you much, though.
I think she's serious about that.
Who cares! I'm not the huge miser here, okay!
Well, with that much energy... how about test piloting?
Wh...
You ran the Brasta for a bit. That's pretty good.
Me, a test pilot...
Hmm... not just anyone can control the Brasta, though.
Oh...
Is that it, Esther?
Uh...
And it's not easy test piloting, either...
...owuh...
You say something?
So what?!
Wha...
I wanna do this, Chief!
I... I know it's gonna be hard, but I have to try!
Sure. If you feel that strongly, I'm not gonna stop you.
I don't wanna hear any whining, though.
Okay!
And that's the senior test pilot's cue to ride back out onto the battlefield.
Bring me back lots of data. Everything you've ever sent, but twice.
The more I can sell, the faster your debt clears.
Yep. Gotta keep up the good fight for the faraway dream of freedom.
Don't die, Crowe.
You too, Esther. Good luck.
Right!

"MAAAAAAAAAARGUERIIIIIIIIIIIIIITE!"

Shuval chews out Marguerite mercilessly until Ime stops him. As far as Ime's concerned, Marguerite may not have done what she was told but she gave him what he needed nonetheless. Besides, her brother just died.

What?

Marguerite didn't know, but yeah, apparently Crowe Brust killed him. Ime dismisses her, rubbing his hands in glee at the thought that Marguerite's new hatred for Crowe will make her stronger in the battles to come. "How will you avoid her wrath, Wavering Scales?"

As for GOONZ, Gaioh wants to leave them alone for a while. He wants the strong to challenge the Imperium, and GOONZ is his best prospect.

And Marguerite Pisteil...

Chene... my one and only brother...
I'm sorry... I couldn't protect you...
I'm sorry, I'm so sorry... I'm the worst sister...
I'm supposed to protect my little brother... I'm so sorry, Chene...
And I'm... completely alone... Chene... I'm sorry, Chene...

We are in so much debt now. On the plus side, next week is a totally awesome scene, Godmars, and Mazinger!

I really like Zeuth's dialogue with Aim. From Kei going "no, gently caress you" to Aim's lies to Roger starting up something of a rivalry to Camille using the newtype mojo on him. I'm a huge sucker for the original material actually playing dynamically off the licensed stuf.

I love how these quips with Ime have you do a takeback until you realize that no, he's bullshitting it every time. :allears: And so we hit Esther's and Marguerite's first real moments of growth as characters, and man it works so much better with a direct translation.

Also SPIGOTS are cool, a shame the animations take an eternity and a half though, I would hit square every time and skip to the part that shows the damage/dynamic kill almost every time.

No, he can't. The very final piece of text in Z2.2 is a window showing Crowe's newest debt. In fact Crowe is so bad with money it becomes a major plot point.

As for the Spigots in Z2.2 the Brasta has both the range and melee versions because it's respecced to be good at both types of combat. They even change the animation of ACP Faiz to reflect this.

INCREDIBLE

Pre-mission note: it's one of the vanishingly few times Sumeragi can go on a Sub-Order, and she is achingly close to that magic 70 mark. Sayaka gains hers, but does it really matter?

Marg demands Zuul execute him already "so I don't have to look at your face for another second." Wahl (remember him? no?) is enraged at his impertinence, but Zuul tells him that that strong will is exactly what he needs from Marg. He's going to execute Marg, in a sense... by erasing his memories and rebuilding him as a loyal soldier of Zuul, and sending him to kill his own brother. Marg struggles to resist, but the process has already begun...

Marg awakens on his battleship with no memories of who he is or who the woman is he's talking to. He asks why he can't remember anything, and she says that his memories have been erased (honest!) so "he can live for the future." Inexplicably, this is enough for the new Marg, and Rose continues that they are en route to the Earth, where GOONZ is, and with them, his enemy Mars. Once again, Marg simply accepts this without question.

GOONZ awaits Elgan Roddick at the location he gave them, apparently one of the shell corporations he moved through as Boatman.

Meanwhile, Lockon, Aoyama, and now Roger sympathize with Crowe's new, multiplied debt. Crowe asks if Roger can't help him, but Roger says the deal's already done. The window for Negotiation has closed. Well, if even Roger won't help him...

Ryoma's advice is to skip out on the debt, but Crowe can't give up the Brasta, especially not now that it's just got its upgrade. His principles leave him a slave to money, so he supposes he'll just go back to working it off. Sara, Runa, and Sochie realize they were wrong when they had pegged Crowe for a flake. While Crowe appreciates it, it's not going to turn him around on the fairer sex overnight - though speaking of gynophobia, they knew someone a little bit like that back in their world, in the Chimera group. It must be a traumatic experience with a girl, right?

Michel, on the other hand, is greatly enjoying ZEUTH's selection of girls, and Pierre and Kei of GOONZ'. Kei even goes so far as to say it's a nice thing about having been forcibly ripped from his own universe. It's a very sunny outlook, and Kappei adds something his dad used to say: "When you've hit rock bottom, you can only look up." That's a nice sentiment. Does Crowe have anything like that? "Even if you take one step forward and two steps back, you're still facing ahead."

The host arrives, and this is the first time some of our people have ever seen Elgan Roddick in person. Alto, Kouji, and Takeru whisper about Roddick's legendary stubbornness and force of will, but Roddick calmly says he's no such thing. "That's why I have to depend on you."

Elgan doesn't have time to chat, though - "and neither does the world." He's not just talking about the Imperium. He's come to ask us face to face to defend the future of humanity, come what may. (Tieria recognizes the phrase - Aeolia Schhenberg worked for the same thing.) He can't offer us power, nor ZEUTH passage home, but...

ZEUTH will help gladly. However, Sumeragi can't forget that Elgan kept some of the U. N. joint forces' movements from us. Shinn has a bigger concern: once, someone asked ZEUTH to help them fight for Law and Order, and that turned out to be a huge mistake. Kira, Athrun, and Camille are all willing to trust Elgan for now...

Apollo smells something fishy, and his animal senses are rarely wrong. He doesn't think Elgan is lying to them, certainly not like their once archnemesis Edel, but he can't put his finger on it. Jiron cheerfully suggests that it doesn't matter and we shouldn't worry about it, and Apollo immediately stops. HMM.

Elgan thanks ZEUTH, and promises to let them know if he learns anything important. Kappei wonders if Banjou is out there, and so does Kira about Lacus and Loran for Diana...

Ohtsuka dials in on Elgan's red phone, but he's looking for Takeru. And he needs Takeru to stay calm and listen, which is always a good sign. Because...

The Gishin have taken his mother.

They've demanded he come out to the Izu peninsula, alone and unarmed. Like an idiot, he's done so, and Rose and her army of psychics jump him. She'll have his head, but first, she wants to let him struggle to have him suffer for his treachery against his Emperor Zuul. Takeru manages to defend himself with one powerful psychic blast, but it drains his energy, and the psychics continue to advance. Just then, explosions fill the plain, but the Gishin radar shows no mecha anywhere nearby...

Chapter 31: The Battle Of Mars and Marg!

What was that? Where are they shooting from?
There aren't any blips on the radar!
Heh heh heh! You don't need a robot to throw a bomb!

Yasu from the Kurogane Bathhouse!
Long time no see, kiddo! Kouji asked us to give you a hand!
You dare to fight Gishin psychics without a weapon?
Hell yeah!
He's too strong!
Master! Slice 'em into ribbons!
!
Aahh!
I wouldn't want to be on the business end of the Master's chopper!
What's the matter with you? Shoot them with your psychic waves and shock blasts!
Who do you think you're dealing with?
Hey, hey! We can see right through your little tricks!
Avalance rolls down the mountain!
Eyes! Ears! Nose!
Whoa...
They're fighting psychics hand to hand...
Stop staring and lend a hand, boy!
Just an old lady!
My goodness, you're making a mess. Hup!
Yaaargh! I'm wrapped up in these strings!
Ho ho ho, these are Super Alloy Z wire. The harder you struggle, the tighter they squeeze!
G-get back! As long as they've engaged you, you won't be able to maintain concentration!
Nice try!

Bang!

You got nowhere to run!
Nice, Django. Give 'em the customer's treatment.
Piece of cake.
The GOONZ sniper squad is putting on a shooting show.
I don't think they're enjoying it. Oh well.
They've earned it, taking Takeru's mom hostage.
Ugh! Keep fighting! We have them outnumbered!
Do you? Are you certain?
You're trying to sacrifice soldiers now?
We won't show any mercy!
H-how are they so strong?
You shoulda done your homework. GOONZ also works as Takeru's bodyguards.
You're pretty good, Crowe? What is that, aikido?
Cistema. Just picked it up a while ago.
(Heh... Crowe's really seen some rough times.)
Gwah!
You really thought you could stomp us just because we didn't have our robots?
Scatter them with the carrier!

!

Wh... he shot it down with a pistol?
That's a good weapon.
It's a Bahauser M571 armor-piercing magnum.
These humans... GOONZ is a threat!
Took ya long enough, huh?
We can fight with or without our mechs!
That's enough!

(Here's a video of the whole GOONZ bodyguard scene in case you want to see it in motion.)

GOONZ has the psychics cornered, so Takeru goes for his mom, but he finds Marg standing in the way and prepared for a duel. Takeru sputters that his brother isn't like this, but Marg laughs. He's never had a brother!

Marg binds Takeru, who hasn't the psychic power left to fight back, but Rose warns him that these humans are much more dangerous than they look. Marg makes the tactical call to retreat his foot soldiers and send in the robots, and takes Shizuko with him.

Mom... Marg...
That's enough simpering out of you!
Landlady, Takeru's...
If you have time to blubber, you have time to do whatever you can. You want to save her, don't you?
Whatever I can...

Marg returns with his soldiers,

so Takeru does whatever he can: summons Godmars! Rose thought he was drained, but Marg at least realizes that his desire to save his mom let him dig deeper. "How touching. Crush the fool, courage and all!"

Takeru's borrowed a Haro for the mission, so he wipes out a squadron of fighter jets in very short order.

But that wouldn't make it any fun, would it? Baron Ashura has brought Ghostfire V9 to help Marg's forces under Dr. Hell's orders. Ashura, however, wants to weaken Takeru, then force the antiproton bomb to explode in space.

But GOONZ is back with their own robots, ready to cover Takeru so he can reach his brother.

Except that they're hanging Shizuko from the bridge! What do we do? Rose demands Takeru surrender if he wants his mother to live. Marg is too far for the sniper team to shoot her free. What do we do?

Baldios! Hyperspace warp!

Oh look, a new robot from ZEUTH! It teleports right up to the Gishin warship and grabs Shizuko.

Rose tries to return fire, but a second machine from ZEUTH intercepts with its God Shield.

Baldios and Godsigma fly Shizuko to safety under the Kurogane Five's guard, then join GOONZ' formation. ZEUTH is glad to see more of their old friends, and all of them would dearly like to make Marg pay for his douchery. With nothing holding us back, it's time for battle!

Zero tells Takeru that it's up to him to decide what to do about Marg. GOONZ will watch his back however he chooses to go.

Most of the super robots in Z had some ludicrous gimmick. Baldios can fly through hyperspace somehow, giving him an evasive trait that comes on at 130 Will and protects him 25% of the time (40% when Aced). In addition, Baldios can also teleport when he moves, spending no energy while ignoring terrain (if grounded) and enemies.

Also, a gunbot with a pilot that knows how to use it. Finally.

It's been a while, Marin, but that doesn't mean you can slip up!
I think that warp speaks for me. So you'd better not hold me back!
Ahh, that's good to listen too. I don't think we'll have any problems.

Uh it's another super robot which is super tanky and cuts stuff. If you use it, it's really useful to open a boss with because you get a surround square and then you reduce its armor. Godsigma's gimmick is the Trinity Charge, which lets it refill its own energy once per stage.

Also, I think it's funny that Juli and Kiraken are exact parallels of Oliver and Raita.

So those are the new robots.

Anyway, since I'm on a time crunch to kill all enemies (it's turn 2 out of 5), let's get to work on Ghostfire.

Meanwhile, Takeru makes for his brother.

Marg continues not to move, and Godmars doesn't have the energy to continue soloing the Gishin.

Meanwhile, Kouji finishes off Ghostfire and gets its Precision Lens. Ashura withdraws it, but leaves the remaining Talos, who are not even worth acknowledging.

At the end of turn 3, GOONZ is finally engaged with the Gishin, having chewed effortlessly through Ashura's chaff.

But by the time they're nearly wiped out, Marg is still hanging out on the top corner of the map.

In fact, he takes his move on turn 4, one turn before the SR point expires.

I mean, I brought Trider because Watta had lines, but... gently caress you, Marg. gently caress you.

Prepare yourself, Mars! I will execute you on the orders of Emperor Zuul!
I have to fight... I have to find out what happened to Marg!
I have to talk to him! If I can't trust my only brother in the universe...

Actually no back up a second.

Yeah, Takeru has the talk command. Like he said...

You have to remember, Marg! We're twin brothers, and we swore to fight together for universal peace!
You can't fool me! I don't have a brother!
Gh... then I'll contact his mind directly with telepathy!

Urgh...
He's...
Marg's mind has been altered by Emperor Zuul!
Mars! How dare you invade my brain!
Please stop this, Marg! You've been mind-controlled!
Silence! You are my enemy! I must destroy you!
It's not working... if I want to get to Marg, I have to sink that vessel!

Let's do that, then. I'm gonna cheat and gap a turn out just to get Kouji and Watta in on the fight, and then claim the SR point anyway. Because seriously, Brainwashed Marg is an rear end in a top hat when it comes to actually coming out to fight.

You know, he was really, honestly happy when he met his brother.
His one and only blood relative in the whole universe. And I know you felt the same way.
That's nonsense. He is my enemy, nothing more.
Brother fighting brother... that is not right at all.
It's you and me, buddy. You're not touching Takeru.

Hey hey hey hey! Siddown and listen up!
You guys are brothers! You and Takeru are bound by the blood flowing in you!
I have no brother!
You forgot about your own brother? How 'bout I smack your head back into working order, huh?
This is to help you remember what's important to you! Take it like a man!

Grr...
What's the matter, Akagi?
He's going to kill us! You can't afford to hold back!
But that's Takeru's brother! We can't...
Coward! Face me in battle or begone from my sight!
Come on! Think about Takeru!

Cut it out! Takeru just said he doesn't want to fight you!
But I want to fight him! It is the will of Emperor Zuul!
But he's your brother! You've gotta look out for your little brother!
Okay, you've made me mad! If Takeru won't beat you up, I will!

You're Takeru's brother! What's wrong with you?
Zuul desires Mars' death, and I will serve his will!
You're not leaving us any choice but to fight you!

Anyway, ending Marg on turn 5 would be easy, but for Takeru to do the deed, it will have to be on the counter.

How dare you spy into my mind, Marg! You will pay for all you've done!
The only way to stop Marg now is to sink his ship.
I'm sorry, Marg! Brace yourself, it'll be quick!

Bitterly victorious, Takeru earns a lot of money (don't forget to precast Bless!) and both items Marg was carrying - a space-enabling Thruster Module and a will-boosting Psychic Reactor. He even learns a new Spirit, Fury.

But his loss only fills Marg with indignance, and he promises to make Mars pay.

Marg was the last enemy (because he's a coward), but other than him, we've done some pretty good work today. We saved the Gishin's hostage and we beat back Dr. Hell again. Still, Takeru will have to fight his own brother, maybe to the death...

Baldios and Godsigma have been with Tanaka for a little while. The weasel's drat good at keeping secrets, but it did come in handy, didn't it? They were being held up his sleeve for just a time like this when they could swoop in and get GOONZ out of a pickle.

ZEUTH talk though - at the end of Z, Marin left Oliver and Raita to go back to his home planet of S-1, along with the spacefaring crew of Godsigma. In fact, Marin's story continues from there; he and Godsigma traveled the galaxy with Aphrodia's colony fleet, and found a new planet that could support the S-1 people. It's a very nice bit of closure for Baldios, in which the S-1 were the bad guys and, in the original story, actually ended the Earth. But anyway, they were on their way back to Earth when a dimensional quake hit, and, well, you know the rest. In fact, Raita and Oliver were taken by their own quake as they saw Marin and Toshiya vanish on their screen.

Actually, there's one difference. So far, our ZEUTH members have popped in in the Earth Sphere, or in orbit at most. Raita and Oliver found themselves far outside the solar system, right where Marin and Toshiya were under attack by the Gishin. They managed to escape and found their way to Earth. It seems like quite a coincidence, and Roger again supposes otherwise. The Singularities attract each other, and Oliver and Raita share a powerful bond with Marin.

And there's one more bit to the story. When they got to Earth, a robot was there to take them to Dragon's Hive. Its name was... Dancouga, they think. Since when was Final in cahoots with Tanaka? Kurara, prodigy investigator, has some digging to do. In the meantime, Baldios and Godsigma are joining GOONZ for real. They've been filled in on the Imperium, Gaioh, and Ime Liard, and we could probably use the robotpower.

Takeru is crying on his mother, understandably. He wails that he wishes she was his real mother so he wouldn't have to fight his brother.

Tsubasa snaps and chews him out. What happened to fighting for peace? He's going to give it up just because it's his brother? He's got a lot of lives and hopes pinned on him. He doesn't have the luxury of being a sad little mama's boy. Kouji is ready to give Tsubasa a piece of his mind, but Shizuko herself says she's right. She advises Takeru to think about it as long as he needs to settle his own doubts, and when he has, to remember that he fights to protect the Earth.

"Are you telling me to fight Marg?"

"That's up to you. But whatever you decide, you'll always be my son."

Takeru has a long path ahead of him, and so does Kouji, who's been watching along with Tsubasa and her posse. He promises he'll keep training with Ryoma, and he'll surprise her when he comes back. The two boys go to join GOONZ. "I must seem like a terrible mother," murmurs Shizuko. "I just told my boy to go to war."

Tsubasa smiles dryly. "Don't worry. There are much worse mothers in the world."

Zuul, like Marg, has figured out that the reason they lost Mars when they had him trapped is because Rose went and kidnapped his mother. He cannot brook failure and is recalling Rose to Gishin for execution.

Marg steps in and says he needs Rose. If he has her, though, he thinks he has a chance at taking over the world. Zuul agrees, but demands that his next operation be a success.

Marg can't explain why he defended Rose, but there's something about Mars. He claims to be his brother, and he does have his face. All Rose knows is that Zuul says the Earth is a danger to the galaxy, and the Gishin have to take control of it or perish. Why does Mars fight them, then? He's branded a traitor, and that's enough for Rose, but Marg still wonders...

Baldios is pretty neat, being a massive robot who can actually avoid enemy attacks moderately well, but I can't fathom finding a space for God Sigma in this game, given how tight deployment space gets. He might be even more generic than Trider.

Godsigma's Sigma Breast Peerless Sword does Armor Down, so it's got good utility - further boosted by the three pilots and a much bigger leeway on EN with the Trinity Energy.

I find it to be the better Armor Debuffer than the OTHER one, that we'll be getting later.

Plus, its theme song is pretty bumpin'!

Unfortunately, not only did it lose it's final attack, it also lost the special BGM that played during it and Sigma Breast Peerless Sword.

As for Baldios, it was my favorite, non-original Super Robot in Z (Aquarion was a drat close second, though) and one of my overall favorite themes - it also lost it's final attack but it would need to lose a whole lot more before I thought thought of taking it off my team! :swoon:

It seems the secret to your success is a combination of boundless energy and enthusiastic insolence...
Godsigma is solid early on in Setsuko's route back in Z, since she has mostly a bunch of mid-level Gundam units that don't pack a lot of punch combined with a bunch of super robots who don't have really strong final attacks yet (or even their final forms, some of the time). So having something around with a really strong final attack and the ability to restore EN for free without a morale hit is pretty handy. However, once the other units catch up and you get access to more units you run into the fact that Godsigma is more boring than a box full of boxes.

The thing about Baldios is that it's 3 units combined, and Marin's unit is a ship equipped with a hyperspace drive (as are most S-1 ships). It's how he got to Earth from S-1 in the first place. Everybody owes it to themself to at least see the movie version of Baldios; it's not "sit through 30 episodes" good but it's certainly 2.5 hours good.

Well, we've been joined by two unique robots. Unique in that their lead pilots (Toshiya and Marin) had to be recast due to the deaths of the original actors. If Marin's new VA sounds familiar, that's because it's the same VA who was brought in to do Jotaro Kid for Alpha Gaiden, and would reprise the role for GC/XO and NEO. Toshiya's new VA should be recognizable, as it's Domon's VA; fun fact, Seki himself BEGGED for the role of Toshiya when he heard that Godsigma was debuting in Z, as he is a fan of the show.

As for the mechs themselves....Baldios is the only real interesting one because it's huge (2L size, IIRC) but can dodge like crazy thanks to its Hyperspace Warp thingie. Godsigma...is just a robot with a semi-cowboy hat on top and notable for being part of the voice bug in Z, where certain characters (Juli, in this case) had their lines played back at a much slower speed than they were recorded. Granted, Juli wasn't the worst case. No, that went to one of Orguss' supporting cast (who doesn't show up in either Z2 game), who had her voice played back so slow, you'd think it was run through a vocal distortion program.

The movie version is good, but like all summary movies it's fairly disjointed; I really hope the series gets properly subbed at some point, especially since the thing that interested me the most from Z and what I was really hoping to see the origin of (the Baldirosier) didn't appear in the movie.

Baldios is one of those shows which is really better in SRW than it is normally. It's kind of a meandering show with a fairly unlikable cast that is most distinctive due to its pretty "wow" (and not entirely in a good way) ending. I can understand why people aren't rushing to sub it. It's just not very good.

Yeah. Some people jokingly called it the "Koyasu Bug" since it happened with 3 out of the 4 roles Koyasu voiced in the game (Neo/Mu, Asuham, and Gym). But, if you listen to Juli's lines, they're being played slower and at a deeper octave than they should be.

There was a video of the affected lines and how they should sound at normal speeds, but I can't seem to find it.
EDIT: Found them, if you want to reference them in your upcoming Z LP.

That pre-mission scene...If Caphi does get all the way done with these games I really do suggest you come back through the games and appreciate how much foreshadowing the games do.

It might not be immediately clear but when Musashi is shouting "Avalance rolls down the mountain!" he's doing the Judo throw that he adapted to be used for Getter 3. Frankly I love scenes where the heroes kick rear end even without their mecha, I'm reminded of a similar scene in @3 where the Alpha Numbers fight the Zonder primevals. That was fun because they got to yell at Kira some more.

Amazingly after all these years this is the first time I've ever realized that Baldios sword is "Pulsaber" instead of "Bal Saber". I had always heard Marin yelling it as "Bal Saber" like it was named for Baldios, but no I just went and checked the Z attack viewer and it is indeed "Pulsaber". Similarly I had thought that Godsigma's special attack was "Sigma Blast" instead of "Sigma Breast". You learn something everyday.

Honestly I think Baldios was hit drat hard by the somewhat inexplicable increase to the EN cost for most ZEUTH robot attacks. I believe that Pulsaber (had to stop myself from writing Bal Saber) was free and I know Thunder Crash and its other attacks didn't cost as much. Most of Godsigma's attacks have roughly the same cost they used to have, it's just that everyone else has their costs raised to be similar to Godsigma but without the ability to Trinity Charge. Also you can no longer set up squads to give Supers energy regeneration so costs are more extreme.

Speaking of which I heard somewhere that planet S-1 in Baldios was actually Earth in the past and they were therefore the cause of the loss of their own homeworld. Is this Baldios anime spoiler actually true?

It was definitely true in Z1. Baldios, like almost all series in Z1, has most of its DARK BACKSTORY folded into the time-loop version of the Black History used by Z1.

Yes, it's true. When the 'aliens' from 'planet S-1' flee their homeworld and travel in search of a new home with their hyperspace drive, they miraculously find themselves close to Earth. They never realized they had actually travelled back in time, and were primarily responsible for its devastation, until it was much too late. Much of this is from the movie, which concludes the series' story.

The whole time I played Z1 I thought "Palsaber" was a typo of "Balsaber," and that the spinning-blade attack was a typo of "Balsaber Drinking."

Although, I think Baldio's ending was more of a result of the series being shut-down halfway through, whereas Ideon was just Tomino doing his thing.

Also, sign me up to the Balsaber club (I never really bothered to look at the kana, which clearly spells Palsaber); I gave up on understanding the other sword attacks name, though, as people say it's Bal/Palsaber Drilling but Marin doesn't really say that.
Drilling could be romanized as "Doriringu" but Marin says "Doringingu" which, to me, doesn't sound like anything.

"Dringing," actually. I'm told that it's some bastardization of "drilling" because he spins the sword, and this makes no sense so I applied License. :eng101:

Pulsaber Dringing is actually somehow slightly more incoherent than Balsaber Drinking to me. I thought it was supposed to be a pun on Marin, his special attack is "Drinking" because it sounds like "Marine". And frankly I'm of the opinion that Drinking or Dringing that animation just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Google Translate calls it "Ringing de," so maybe it's Pulsaber D'Ringing, because it rings the enemy's bell. :v:
