I got this album and I'm really digging the sick bass groove/funk/jazz tracks in it, like Beyond, that instrumental bit in the middle of Moroder, in Get Lucky, the twangy guitar in Dance. Can any of you kind goons recommend any other artists/albums/tracks that are similar? Also really dug Contact.

Please don't make me comb this long rear end thread for tidbits of info that may/may not apply :(

Music with sick bass grooves and chirpy funk guitar is my favourite kind, and my favourite part of RAM. Here's what I find hits the same spot. Most of it comes from turn-of-the-80's R&B and jazz-funk:

- The guitar on Dance is played by Nile Rodgers, so look up his discography on Wikipedia and listen to everything he's been involved in, e.g. his band Chic and all the hit songs he produced in the 80's. It all has that same guitar sound and it's great.
- anything by Roger Troutman or his band Zapp, for chirpy guitars and robot voices. The songs Dancefloor and I can Make you Dance remind me a lot of Lose Yourself to Dance.
- jazz-funk like the Crusaders, Bob James, Surface Noise, and disco-era Herbie Hancock
- sophisticated groovy funk like SOS Band, Mtume, Slave
- late-70's Parliament and Funkadelic (and then listen to their early 70's work because it's great too)
- "Regulate" by Warren G (1994 gangsta rap) and the song it samples, "I Keep Forgettin'" (Michael McDonald) have a pretty similar riff to Beyond.
- Jamiroquai
- anything tangentially related to any of the above
- I guess for something more modern you could listen to Chromeo or Escort but they're both a bit more "get up off yo rear end and dance" than something like Beyond

Wow, I thought I was tired of Girl Talk, but he managed to get me to like "Get Lucky" again.

Also reminded me that Micheal Jackson is timeless. MJ and DP never working together is one of the great tragedies of history.

Really can't stop listening to this album. It's finding it's way on to my turntable a few times a week. The pacing is just perfect.

I've been hearing Get Lucky on the radio quite a bit lately. With the sunroof open, windows down, warm sun in your face. It's such a great tune to drive to.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

Back in the middle of the thread somewhere someone asked for similar artists and a bunch of people jumped up with Bag Raiders self-titled debut. I now pass that recommendation on to you because this is some pretty bangin' stuff

In general RAM chat, what I really want is a remix that drastically reduces the first 2 and last 4 minutes of Touch and expands on the 'nawlins-sounding big band thing they have going on in the middle (motherfucking oboes out of nowhere). Either way the intro is criminally long, maybe do your sad vocoder thing for 30 seconds or so but 1:50 is just wacky.

I keep coming back to the album and I keep getting motivated to listen to it, but I'm thoroughly disappointed every single time. There are about 4 songs that I actually enjoy on this album. The rest sound like silly sound effects to waste time and just generally sound really weak. In my opinion, this is in no way a revolutionary album.

It's been a month or so since I've had this album in heavy rotation. I thought this was the case for me too, but for some reason, earlier today I started hearing Within in my head, and then Instant Crush right after it. So I immediately had to play the whole album. And typing this now, I'm wanting to listen to it all over again.

I still listen to it pretty regularly. From beginning to end, usually skipping motherboard (not because it sucks, but it's not a car friendly track) and Within. (it's grown on me over time but it still doesnt grab me)

They just shuffled around some points in the song, added some faint bells, and mixed pharells voice. This is not "daft punk sampled themselves and did a house track" remix. This is the "some of the concepts that were on the cutting room floor were picked up and expanded" remix.

I'm looking at it as a proof of concept that they can "do it live" which gives me more then enough hope.

Did you not listen to any of the interviews that they gave? They specifically said they did not want to do house because every single person with a turn table is doing it already and ruining the genre.

They specifically said that a lot of the electronic music coming out today is not distinct enough and it's just been so bland.

Look what we have now compare it to Laurent Garnier and you will see what they are talking about.

It's being reported that Daft Punk will actually perform on the Colbert Report tonight.

quote:

Tonight’s the night: Daft Punk will make a rare television appearance on The Colbert Report. And though it was unclear upon the initial announcement, it’s now official: the Robots will, in fact, be performing.

According to Colbert’s website, on tonight’s episode “the electronic music duo Daft Punk helps Stephen perform the song of the summer at this years Colbchella.” Presumably, that song is “Get Lucky”, especially since Colbert crashed Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and danced to the song in anticipation of Daft Punk’s appearance.

Also worth noting: “Get Lucky” collaborator Nile Rodgers is also in New York City as he’s scheduled to appear on tonight’s episode of Fallon. Might he join in on the performance?

All shall be revealed later tonight. Stay tuned.

It really does grow on you. When I heard it for the first time I instantly loved the direction they took, but knew it was going to be a while before all the songs clicked. I knew I was hooked when I would have some parts of Instant Crush and Touch stuck in my head ("If love is the answer you're home..." just gets me EVERY TIME).

That said, I'm stoked if they are actually going to be on Colbert tonight!

Aside from getting shot in the head, David, what have you done with yourself?
Shook just released his album today. He's more like Breakbot, Justice or Revolte, but there are some definite Daft Punk influences (one that is a a bit too similar to Something About Us on his last EP). I'll eventually buy the LP, but shipping is more expensive than the actual record (from the Netherlands)
