Yeah, that's massively overweight. And this is a time when recruiters can be picky- the military is in drawdown mode. Don't plan on joining this year, for sure.

Think about your life right now dude, you go to UCLA (UCI grad here, what up mang), and I'm guessing you have a relatively comfortable life and a pretty good social life where you are loved and appreciated by both your friends and your family. Now suddenly you enlist, and you probably won't see any of those people again for a really long time. You get to see their lives move on without you, and yes, everyone follows their own path, but while they are out living their lives to the fullest, you're picking weeds out of the pavement or standing in a freezing formation until two in the fuckin' morning. I joined because I wanted to do some good in the world, you know, the whole romanticized de oppresso liber kill kony 2012 poo poo. And let me tell you, while it may be the opportunity to do what needs to be done, it is most likely not going to be. And even if it is, 99% of your time is going to be spent in a really stupid place. You will literally be a piece of property. All your personal comforts and freedoms that you take for granted now, will be taken from you.

I was allowed to be over my max weight when I joined, but had to be under a certain body fat. 28% I believe via the tape test. I'd have to imagine nowadays recruiters will just show you the door if you look over weight.

Got a 137 GT score today, same as I got in 2008 when I took the ASVAB. The other 4 people that went to take the ASVAB with me failed. Not sure how that's even possible considering it's all stuff you learn in high school. Hopefully I can still make it in time for the early August OCS board, just need a PT test now.

Maybe not so much nowdays, but there are a few enlisted folk from the surge in the military who failed the ASVAB and still managed to to join the Navy on waivers. Like the DC1 in Pensacola with a 24 ASVAB. You will be working with these people.

So I tried to call a recruiter today to setup an appointment but his office line has been busy all morning. Is sending an e-mail introducing yourself a lovely thing to do? Also before you ask, I would go there but the place is about 45 minutes away, the weather sucks and I don't feel like finding out the office is closed when I get there.

Echoing that sentiment. People generally hate any sort of conflict (or are incredibly lazy), so bringing it right to their desk will get it done for the simple fact of making it go away so they can get back to watching phone camera beatdown videos on youtube.

I have a question about Navy OCS: I'm reporting in a few days, and one of the things I haven't gotten a great answer to is how much money to bring. The main webpage for OCS says to have $300.00 but command said to not have more than $20.00 when all was said and done. Do you guys think I should just follow the OCS page and have the $300 on hand and hope that no one steals it?

Having access to $300 or so sounds like a good idea in order to buy useful stuff at the NEX, but assuming you have credit/debit cards you don't need that much actual cash. The only thing I remember needing cash for was like $10 for the initial hair cut (for some reason that couldn't get billed to your account like everything else they issue you). You'll have a locker, though, so you can keep whatever you bring secure. I'd just go with whatever you normally carry in cash.

So had I my physical last week, and my DEP day(?) to talk about jobs is on the 12th. I'm going in for reserves and thinking about doing Admin as I'm a weirdo who likes paperwork and nice pens. Is there any jobs I should absolutely avoid or look for? I scored a 70 on my Asvab, but don't recall any of the specific grades. I'm an apprentice butcher at the moment. So something as far away from that as possible. Thanks

Admin in any branch is probably one of the cakest jobs, especially if you like pens (your nice pens will be stolen). I guess the downside is you're doing bitch paperwork instead of actual military poo poo.

Navy YNs (yeoman) always seem to get CAPd (promoted) because they do all the COs paperwork. Also paperwork. If you can get a top secret, eventually you might handle the security officer stuff like clearances and security procedures. Think aside from YNs the air side has AZs that do airplane paperwork. Really, every job does tons of paperwork so do what you want. YNs and AZs just drown in it.

Thanks How does someone love paperwork? Can you seriously please explain this to me? I'm baffled. But if you love paperwork, go 42A (HR) and as a bonus, that's usually where the only half decent looking girls in the Army are. When I was going through AIT, there was a girl reclassing from 42A who had the biggest tits I've ever seen. She was a skinny girl too. The drill sergeants actually had to take her aside and tell her to wear 2 sports bras for PT because the bouncing was a distraction. She was really dumb and ended up failing and going back to 42A.

OK. So I may have posted in here before, but I had some kick in the pants happen recently. I have a degree in Computer Science. My GPA was not hot, but I am 29(30 in August). I am currently interested in joining the USAR. Obviously its a bit late for ROTC...so what options do I have?

Don't put your GPA on your resume. You have a CS degree, just make yourself sound really important with a ton of prior experience (each year in school counts as 1 year experience).

Aunt just finished OCS with her History degree. God help you Army dudes. To the dude in love with paperwork: YN is pretty sweet from what I hear. To the dude going in with a degree: Why are you pissing away your future? Just for an insight as to what you might end up doing, you will eventually at one point or another question the amount of money you earn. After looking online at different job offers, you'll find you are making poo poo change.

Sir Lucius posted:Don't put your GPA on your resume. You have a CS degree, just make yourself sound really important with a ton of prior experience (each year in school counts as 1 year experience). No kidding. I know someone who was 3 semesters into an IT degree and was hired at the loving interview with no professional experience (job at the time was as a secretary). Post-probationary period pay is roughly what I made as a 2Lt, with arguably better health benefits (definitely better, but it costs more than zero).

The key is benefits. Sure your by-the-numbers paycheck isn't what others might get. Others don't get an allowance for housing, it comes out of their check and healthcare (if they're lucky enough to have it in the US) costs a fuckton and sucks rear end in its own unique ways as well as coming out of that check. And food, and utilities, and... Deployed pay is federal tax free and more than a few states have all active duty pay state/local tax free (Thanks PA!). GI Bill is also so stupendously good it's beyond words. (it needs to be a good deal because we have a volunteer force but the job blows chunks)
