There was a specific car model I've seen that had "disappearing" doors as stock which would just sink down into the chassis. Wish that had caught on.

Also, the S2000 has an awesome digidash. The rev meter looks like it's out of Gran Turismo 4:

I was driving a 94 Saturn with automatic seat belts until very recently. Whenever someone who wasn't used to them got in my car they were always slightly panicked and confused by them.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned these yet: the VT100 terminal:

It was released in 1978 and was so successful that computers still have VT100 terminal emulation programs on them. I fondly remember banks of them at the university library for accessing the book database.

Hardware terminals aren't used anymore, though. Computing power is so cheap that it's wasteful to dedicate a machine to just providing a text terminal.

I still have two VT220s, a 320, a couple 420s, and a 520 or two. They make really good IRC terminals to leave around the house :v:

I found an awesome telecommunications network data analyzer in my storage unit when I went to clean it out a bit last week. If I can just remember to bring my camera data cable to work I'll post some pics.

The one in the background (the blue one) is a Lear Seigler ADM-3 or ADM-3A, my dad used one in college and I have it sitting here waiting to be repaired right now. Needs a couple switches cleaned out and I'm reasonably certain one of the memory chips is dead so I'll need to track one down and solder it in.

Honestly Boston is no more antiquated than a lot of cities or areas that are old in general. Its just that Boston is more noticeable because its a massive city.
There is a 25-pin D-subminiature connector RS232 port standard as well, it was the original until IBM realized no one gave a gently caress about most of those signals and reduced it to 9 pins. Technically speaking, it's a DE9 and a DB25 but no one calls them that anymore.

So you still have to manually put on your seatbelt and there's a possibility of equipment failure that would render the single most important safety device in the car less than optimally operational? How did these things happen again?

I can't remember if it was this thread or the "old computers" thread, but a dozen or so pages ago someone posted some tips on connecting old computers to modern LCD TVs. I just dug out my C64 / Apple ][e / Atari 800 / etc and want to get them up and running. Someone mentioned some kind of whizbang connector box that cleaned up the signal and had some other options (I think it even had an option to reintroduce RF noise, or something awesome like that).

I can't find that post anywhere. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and/or have any suggestions for connecting old tech to new tech like this?

It goes around the top edge of the side window when you close the door. The side that you usually buckle is always attached.

First model year for the Focus was 99 in Europe/2000 in the US. You're undoubtedly thinking of the early to mid-90s Escort. Ford was in love with the auto shoulder belts during that era; my parents had a '92 Tempo that had them.

If it just the battery you can get that replaced cheap and easy. If it won't turn on because the existing battery popped leaking corrosive awesome-destroying acid over the insides then time to pour one out for lost glory. :smith:

I'm talking about having your car data displayed. Which isn't any more distracting than looking at your dash.

Texting or watching movies is a different matter. But yeah, the temptation may be there and it would be hard for the police to enforce. Mayhaps the Google system wouldn't let you do anything but look at your speed when you're driving a car?

It's not the battery. I tried that years ago. It just upped and died.

Edit: I took the battery out of it almost 20 years ago when it died, and every few years when I find it in whatever drawer I stashed it in, I go and get a battery thinking maybe I did something wrong the last time, but no...

I wouldn't have thought it was Google's responsibility any more than kitchen knife manufacturers are responsible for when their products are used as murder weapons.

But the app developer could quite easily block other apps whilst in operation. Especially if it's bouncing information back and forth from the car to know when it's best not to let the user watch movies.
