GAME STATUS ANNOUNCEMENTS

:siren: Second post has upcoming content news :siren:

Taking forever to change zones? On the Neverwinter Launcher, go to options, and check the box next to "Disable On-Demand Patching". It'll download the rest of the game files instead of trying download them on a streaming basis as you play. No more seven minute zone changes! (This may take awhile to download, it's over a gig worth of stuff, so do it when you're not intending to play for a little while).

Goon guilds are Something Lawful and The Terrible Secret of Neverwinter. Feel free to type /channel_join dndgoons and chatter in there.

Mumble info in this thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3521554

Much of the below text shamelessly copied from Vanilla Gorilla's old thread:

General Info

The basic story behind Neverwinter is that Cryptic studios - mostly known as the guys behind City of Heroes/Villains, Champions Online and Star Trek Online - started developing the game for Atari as a single player experience with multiplayer elements several years ago. Since then, the project has been reimagined as a much more multi-player focused affair - Neverwinter now seems to be patterned after Cryptic's work in COH/COV, in that there are large, persistent adventure areas peppered with instanced quest areas and "dungeon delves". In general, players interact in adventure areas, dipping into instanced quest zones for story-driven content and small group activity. At the end of each adventure area's story-arc, players can engage in 5-man "delves", which make up the "raid-like" content of the game and provide the greatest rewards. The game is published by Perfect World Entertainment (who bought Cryptic and the rights to publish as Atari went down the shitter).

Two of the defining characteristics of the game, in addition to the above, lie with Cryptic's embracing of user-generated content and action-focused combat. The game has a robust toolset called "The Foundry" that allows players to construct their own adventures to share with the Neverwinter community. The toolset is available from within the Neverwinter client, and players can play and rate other player's creations from within the game. In fact, there is a daily quest for doing so! For anyone that liked the player-made quests in something like City of Heroes, this is very similar. The Foundry promises to give the game a lot of longevity, as there will be a constant source of new quests for your character to do even at high level.

Here's a pretty good video of The Foundry in action:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_7WgszhNN4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzSBodMnPtU

Taking a page from recent MMOs like Tera and Guild Wars 2, Neverwinter ditches traditional MMO control schemes, in favor of "reactive" and "action-oriented" combat (to quote the devs). Tab-targetting is gone, instead players target NPCs on the fly using a reticle, like a third-person action game. In deference to the 4E D&D rules, PC's choose from two "at-will" powers, that are mapped to the right/left mouse button. Players may then choose three additional abilities mapped to other keys - two "encounter powers" and a "daily" power. Encounter powers are more powerful attacks or (in some cases) strong utility/CC abilities on a short cooldown. Daily powers represent players "ultimate" skills, and charge up over time as players gain "action points". Finally, players engage in active defense, using a "utility" power mapped to a dodge key to either avoid enemy attacks or (in the case of Guardian Fighters) to block using their shield. Most people that I've talked to who have played throughout the beta think that they really nailed the feel of fun active combat here, and that the combat is the best draw for this game.

Classes

As previously mentioned, Neverwinter is largely based on 4E D&D rules and lore. As such, it's taking a number of cues from the 4E skill system (including things like feats - which largely act in the Neverwinter incarnation in the place of talents). It's important to note that 4E acts as an inspirational foundation for the game - Cryptic has pretty obviously modified a lot of things to fit the game into the action MMO space they're working in.

The game launched with 5 classes, and the "trinity" is largely represented. However, it's unclear to what degree the "trinity" is actually required to clear most content, as players have ample access to health potions, a healing companion, and lots of damage avoidance through active abilities. The harder 5-man "dungeon delves" will probably be more reliant on that traditional model. So far there have been hints that a Ranger class and a Warlock class are in the works, but are not in at launch - Cryptic developers have mentioned several times that additional classes are high on the list for post-launch content, and there is certainly plenty of source material to draw from.

Guardian Fighter

The first class is the Guardian Fighter - as the name implies, this class largely fulfills a tank role in group play. Wielding a one-handed weapon and shield, Guardians focus on defending their buddies, slamming monsters with powerful attacks, and generally keeping the attention on them.

Great-Weapon Fighter

Like being a guy in heavy armor, with a big :fuckoff: hammer or great-sword? Well, the Great-Weapon Fighter is for you. Largely a DPS class with an AOE focus (though it also tanks well), likes to smash things into tiny bits.

Trickster Rogue

Flickering from shadow to shadow, laying down traps for enemies and gouging their insides out from their backsides, Trickster Rogues are the stealthy class in Neverwinter. Again, a DPS class focused on gutting monsters and handling the sneaking about. Roughly 75% of the server population is rogues.

Control Wizard

Wizards in 4E aren't about DPS (although they can, certainly, dish out some pain). Instead, the magic-flingers of Neverwinter are focused on controlling fights, employing skills like Ray of Frost to slow, stun, freeze and knock back enemies in order to make fights more manageable for their friends. Wizards are absolutely essential for endgame dungeons and the more the better.

Devoted Cleric

The healing specialists of Neverwinter, Devoted Clerics use a variety of direct heals, AOE heals, reactive heals (e.g. wards they place on mobs that heal damage dealers) and grants of temporary HP to keep their buddies alive. That said, Clerics are also able to wield the holy fury of their gods to smite foes, lash them with divine fire and control them with bonds of energy. The Devoted Cleric works in a more active role than most healers in other MMOs, largely dealing damage and healing in part through that and things such as wards on enemies that cause all players that hit the enemy to be healed.

Because of the constanttly changing metagame and balance patches if you have any particular build questions you should consult the official forums.

Crafting aka Professions

Professions open up at level 10. You will get a quest when you can start them. You can automatically do all of the professions, you don't have to pick between them. They operate off a Farmville-esque timer system where you set something to craft and forget about it. You can do this from anywhere, even in the middle of a dungeon, no need to go stand by an anvil. For anyone who played STO and remembers the Duty Officer system, this will seem familiar. As you level up or complete other goals, multiple profession slots will open, so you can have more than one "asset" (aka slave) doing things at a time.

Also, you can access the Neverwinter Gateway here: http://gateway.playneverwinter.com/

This will let you do profession stuff even when not logged into the game, as well as check in-game mail and stare longingly at your character sheet.

I didn't read your big post above. Why should I play this stupid game?

The action oriented combat is really good. The developers made a conscious design choice to make your character stand still while it is attacking (unlike Guild Wars 2 where you can be constantly in motion), but give every class some sort of active dodge or block to avoid large hard-hitting special attacks from enemies. This makes the combat feel a lot more weighty but still very-fast paced.

The Foundry is cool and guarantees a stream of new content. And it's fun to mess with.

Also, the game is totally free so why not try it out? Free to download, free to play. No content or character classes are gated off behind a paywall. There's plenty of stuff to buy if you've got the Zen, but you do have the whole experience available without paying a dime.

I didn't read your big post above, and I really like to nitpick things. Please give me a short list of things to bitch about even if I don't load up the game.

Some people think the character models are really ugly.

Although the game is totally free to play, the cash grabs can be a little blatant at times. Right now, the game drops Nightmare Lockboxes which require special Enchanted Keys to open. Guess how you get enchanted keys? Real money. However, the stuff in the Nightmare Lockboxes isn't all that great (mostly you get Runestones or Enchantments, not gear), although there is a chance at a SWEET PURPLE MOUNT or a firey bird companion. Every time someone gets a SWEET PURPLE MOUNT there is a global announcement, to prod people into buying more enchanted keys. It's a little annoying but ultimately ignorable.

Much of the gear is kind of uninteresting, and classes are largely locked to one weapon type (although they may have different skins, like a Great Weapon Fighter may get a big club instead of a big sword, or a Rogue may get axes instead of daggers for some weapons).

The game is free to play, so there will be pubbies. So many pubbies.

The voice acting is TERRIBLE. Some might say it is grooooo-some. Just do yourself a favor and turn it off.

Currently there is very little to do after you reach level 60 and as a result a ton of goons have abandoned the game, which is why there is only one guild at the moment. I'm not sure how many people are going to come back for the new module, but don't expect there to be a huge stable population of goons playing the game three months from now.

Random stat rolling? Do I have to sit here and reroll my stats a million times like I'm playing a Wizardry game?

Those aren't random stats. There is a small number of fixed arrays that you cycle through when you "reroll".

Wait I have gold and astral diamonds and zen why are there so many currencies OH GOD MY BRAIN

Yes, it can be a little daunting at first. Gold is mostly used to buy consumables like potions and kits, although some things like companions can be bought for high amounts of gold. Zen is the real money currency, which can be used to buy things like bags and bank slots and super-special companions in the Zen Store. Astral Diamonds ("AD") are the in-between currency that are used for almost everything else, such as auction house purchases, buying special things like identify scrolls or special mounts and companions, and the premium currency things you would expect like speeding up crafting or companion training.

You get AD from some quest rewards (like the dailies), selling things on the auction house, and invoking at altars for your religion. Most forms of earned AD come in the form of rough astral diamonds, which need to be refined on the currency tab of your inventory. There is a limit on how much AD you can refine per day.

Also there is a player exchange for Zen to AD and AD to Zen in-game. Which is set at wherever the market ends up, people just place buy and sell orders, so no idea where that exchange rate will stabilize yet. Lately it's settled to around 335 AD per zen, which is totally affordable considering dailies can net you 10-15k AD per day.

What level can I do various things at?

Most things that you hear about but don't currently have access to will be blatantly given to you via a quest at the appropriate level. Here's a quick list:

Professions: Level 10
Altar Invoking: Level 11
Foundry Creation Access: Level 15 (there's no quest for this but I think you get an in-game email)
One Free Companion: Level 16
Mount: Level 20
Paragon Path: Level 30
Gauntlgrym: Level 60

Give me some sweet PROTIPS.

You probably don't want to identify everything that drops, at least at very low-levels. Identify scrolls drop, but cost AD if you run out and need to buy them. If you ID only your class stuff at first or things usable by anyone (rings, amulets), you will eventually be rolling in identify scrolls and can ID as much useless crap as you want.

It's worth always carrying a couple of the kits for the four out of five class skills (thievery, religion, dungeoneering, nature, arcane) that you don't innately have. They are cheap and the skill nodes drop copious crafting stuff.

(via Lawlicaust): Here's a little tip about companions. Companions get the exp you get for turning in quests. So if you have a max rank companion that you normally quest with (like the cleric), swap companions right before you turn a quest in and the new companion will get all the turn in experience. I've maxed out two other companions just from turn-ins alone without using them at all.

If you are going to be out of the game for 18 hours or so, it can be worth setting up the "hire a new slave" thing in professions, as you'll want more of them later and they take FOREVER.

If you bought one of the special Founder's Packs, your stuff will be either at the Postal Courier or at the Founder Vendor. You'll see the Founder Vendor near the quest guy who gives you your hobo cosmetic suit (the first Knox quest).

These money-grubbing assholes want me to PAY to RESPEC? Along with my righteous indignation, I'm also now totally panicking about my power points and feat points and I haven't put any points in anything because oh my goooooooddd

Calm down. First of all, you can respec Feats with Astral Diamonds, not Zen. The Zen respec token only applies to your Powers. Secondly, you get enough Power Points where you are probably going to take every power in the tree you even remotely want just to get to the next tier of powers, and the only real difference is what you end up maxing out. You may end up doing a respec at 60 when you know what you want your buildout to be and you're ready to be fully optimized, but if you've played that long, maybe you're ready to throw five bucks their way? Even if not, you can try to get the Zen for a respec by trading AD for it, or just not stress about that one point that you should have put into maxing that one skill you maybe sometimes use instead of that other skill you never use. In short, don't stress about it.

How do I make AD?

Praying: pray three times a day (once per hour), get 2000 AD.

Dailies: You can pick up quests once per day that will award you 1-4k diamonds for doing stuff like PVP, foundries, skirmishes, etc. Don't forget to visit Lord Neverember once you hit 60 for even more dailies!

Crafting: Leadership, once leveled up, will provide a steady trickle of rough diamonds. The other professions have top-tier items that are always in demand on the auction house but require a very high investment in tools and materials to gain a profit from.

The Auction House: once you start running dungeons you will get a surplus of gear you can't use (I guess this is changing with the new patch and that stuff will be bind on pickup?) which you can sell on the auction house for diamonds. House gets a cut but it can be fast money.

Salvaging: New feature! Any purple items that you don't want any more and can't sell on the AH because they're bound/basically worthless can now be traded in to some guy for AD.

Zen Market: it is possible to exchange AD for Zen and vice versa. I wouldn't normally recommend attempting to speculate because the price is usually very stable, but events that create an influx of players (ie, new content) will certainly drive up the price as demand increases sharply. Plan accordingly.

Special Events: every once in a while Cryptic will come up with a special event to drum up player base. It can be anything from setting off fireworks to revisiting skirmishes and often supply unique dyes and cosmetic items, so they're worth paying attention to.

Do we have a goon guild?

Yes. The best way to get in a guild is to type /channel_join dndgoons and ask for an invite there. Most people are generally talking in the global channel these days to ensure cross-guild communication.

NEW STUFF!

Hunter Ranger Class

A combined ranged/melee class. Tab is used to switch between ranged or melee, and dailies don't necessarily cost 100% of your AP.

New Paragon Paths

All the existing classes will get new paragon paths. Each path has one new at-will, one new encounter power, and one new daily, as well as three new class features and three new feats.

Wizard: Master of Flame A fire tree that focuses on damage over control. Targets get stacks of Smolder. Smolder deals damage over time, and if target is affected by Chill, it gains Rimefire aspect, allowing its duration to be refreshed by Chill effects.

Cleric: Anointed Champion A selection of party buffs with few active healing spells.

Rogue: Whisperknife Focuses on combat advantage, and has a power that knocks the target prone, because rogues weren't annoying enough already.

Guardian Fighter/Great Weapon Fighter Get each others paragon paths. I initially was pretty unhappy about this but after thinking about it having Threatening Rush on my GWF sounds rad as heck. Also they're buffing Wicked Strike. Uhhh I don't really care about GF but it seems like it might be all right as well.

New Content

The Dread Ring Campaign, which is probably a lot like Sharandar. Other than that I don't know much about it except blah blah blah Valindra blah.

Collection System

You get to see all the crap you could be grinding for. If you get all the things in a set you now get a sweet title for it!

Refinement System

Pour all of your useless enchantments into one big enchantment! Go on, cram em on in.

Active Companion Bonuses

You get five active companion slots at level 60 (but can only have one summoned at a time). Each one will give a small bonus. Generally the rarer the quality of companion the better the bonus.

Artifacts

These are new items that give you a bonus power and varying amounts of stats, based on quality. They level up via some kind of refinement system and can be upgraded in quality multiple times, with additional passive bonuses at each level. Usable in PVP.

Sword Coast Adventures

A minigame on the Gateway whereby you send your companions off on little quests and click on dice or something. You get gold and other stuff for successfully completing it.

Cryptic did a great job with the gameplay but I can't help but believe they're morons in balancing classes. I play a GWF( lvl 58) but havent played in weeks. I was really hoping Cryptic would give some lovin/buffs to GWFs but what do I see in the new patch? Major nerfs to GWF.

Why nerf an essential skill to an already low-demand class? Seriously, instead of balancing dungeon mobs from player exploits, creating a need for AOE dps or just the GWF kit in general, they nerf SLAM. The class already struggles with finding groups in pve since CW's can just toss mobs off the map and TR's deal way more single target DPS to bosses.

I don't understand Cryptic's thought process.

Since I am still new, I went to the official forums to check out what the new nerfs are all about. Jesus, so much poo poo raining down. Got bored with this game because there was no community. It's really weird being a world of thousands of people but feeling totally alone. Zone chat is a joke, it's just spam and conversation moving too fast to read. There are only 0-3 goons on at any one time. And the most stunning fact I encountered was that there was zero conversation in dungeons. I'm not making that up. I had about a dozen or so runs under my belt, and literally the only comments ever said in the dungeon was my sole, "Hello!" at the beginning. Absolute silence from then until the end.

In my experience that's the same in every game with a lfg queue, dungeon finder, whatever you want to call it. When finding a group for something requires some level of effort in actually talking to people to find out if they want to join you, it makes people more likely to continue talking after that. When all it takes is a mouse click, people are likely to just keep playing as if they were solo. The only game I've ever played that has one of those but people still actually talked to each other in groups was City of Heroes, and that was mostly because 99% of groups there were formed from global channels and just used the queue to get into things faster.

I almost wish the idea had never been thought of, just because it takes some of the multiplayer aspect out of MMOs when you don't have to communicate with other people even when playing with them anymore. Alternately, it could just be this game's horrible interface that makes it all but impossible to chat and play at the same time.

Noricae
Nov 19, 2004

cheese?
Yeah, I totally agree with the dungeon finder/lfg trend. It seems like a good idea until you play a game with it (or it gets added to a game and then that ruins the group finding somewhat or mucks up group another way). A simple listing of group adds is plenty and would let you know who is up for doing what (like DDO's, but they have other issues, like no global channel, which may be a good thing). Plus if there's no to weed out anyone then players just start treating random people they group with in the queue like bots (well some of them are..)

Wait a minute, are there really 13 currencies or is that just soon(tm)?

I stopped playing Neverwinter a while ago, and since then I've gotten emails from them along the lines of "Come back baby I got you something."

Here's one I got for a rare weapon and dungeon seal. Better some other goon get use out of it then me not using it.

Thanks, grabbed this.

I'm wondering if Bonus: 2x Seal of the Drake means that you get 2 Drake seals or if it's some buff to double your Drake seals ?

Well, there's Zen and astral diamonds and glory and grym coins and five different seals and the two coins you get from praying. And gold and tarmalune bars. That's thirteen. But I might be missing some and there's also barter items like enchanted keys and dragon eggs and coalescent wards. Am I missing something? Feels like I'm missing something.

Each zone has its own currency for treasure stash or seal trade-in.

I mostly agree with this but a big problem is the post-TBC trend where every 5-man dungeon is balanced around the fact that with a LFG finder you can end up with some of the worst players in the universe so they just make poo poo as easy and faceroll as possible. There's no need to talk because there's no need for a competent tank or puller or coordinated CC.

As part of the FotF patch these are being moved into the currency inventory bag. Because of this, they had to increase the number of slots in that bag, despite the fact that right now it's 3 times bigger than it needs to be.

Has anyone ever found the bounty items remotely worthwhile? I once traded in the Mount Hotenow thingies and got some armour that sold for 50k, but I think everything else has been just a random green. And not even a random green that I ever used, even.

That was the other thing too. The game just seems too easy. I hit level 30 after like 3 or 4 days of just playing a couple hours a night.

Here's my code thing I got in an email too: DSL14-K2D-42CB

Also if it's possible to transfer accounts I have a max level halfling guardian named "Cheeto" I won't be using.

I suppose technically you could split Gold into Silver and Copper... Plus Astral Diamonds and Unrefined Diamonds are different according to the game, for some reason. This game's nuts.

Goddammit, I created on Saturday, should have looked for this thread. I'm an idiot, and am on Beholder instead of Mindflayer. :(

So, I'm a crafting whore, and was wondering if there are any high-ROI assets I should be getting around level 30...? "Assets" in the sense of "those things I can equip on my craft-dudes."

If you're gonna go crafting, it's worth sinking the AD into buying 4 Mithral tools to start with in your chosen crafting style. Expensive? Sure, but they will pay for themselves with all the items you can produce with them. This also allows you to open the last two crafting slots most people unlock (100% speed, and L3 Crafting result) for even more you can produce.
