The purpose of "welfare" (i.e. the social safety net as a whole) should be to give people every chance and opportunity to better themselves and improve their situation to the point where they no longer need the aid. The ideal is, in fact, NO welfare - not because people are undeserving, but because it is no longer necessary. I should add that, in the current state of things, it's unfortunate because the programs do not have the resources to accomplish this goal. Not nearly enough.

I haven't actually talked to the OP here for a long time (someone I knew in high school, added me on FB, the usual) and I don't know what their situation is, but if it is indeed a death, then the third reply is mindblowingly insensitive. Using that Australian murder as an example of blacks being thugs is even worse than the usual stories that pop up because the killers were split perfectly in half between blacks and whites and only blatantly obvious prejudice would lead someone to call it 3 black teens. Easily one of the worst cloaked examples of shaping a story to match ideology I've seen.
