The first time I heard him belt out "OH MARCELINE! Why are you so MEAN?"
It touched me somehow, and now I throw that episode on just when I'm cleaning up my apartment because it gets me to move faster when I need a boost. Also because I LOVE the line "an angry cloud man and his beautiful cloud bride". The only other song that even comes close to hitting my heart strings is "A tough 'tootin' baby".

Speaking of that song, I rewatched all of the Flame Princess episodes and I really thought her reaction to Finn and Jake's bet after he ruined her dinner party is proof positive that she and Finn were meant to be.

Yeah, I guess that's pretty on par for puberty and general teenage awkwardness. I was thinking of it more from a storytelling perspective, when I guess I should look at it from the character's perspective

I'd say it pretty regular storytelling. You get over the dream mate in the course of a relationship but after the break up you return to longing for the old dream mate then quickly realize they're not your dream mate anymore.

If PB had reciprocated and Finn came to the decision anyway it'd basically be the start of the last act in almost every romantic comedy.

Is there a place to get more of the music from the show? Looking in particular for the song that Marceline sings with The Ice King.

As an aside, my daughter just had a sleepover party last night for her 10th birthday. I have never seen so much Adventure Time merchandise in one place in my life! It's like a Hot Topic in here. :3:

Yeah I showed some earlier episodes to kids a while back but I don't think I'd be comfortable doing so in the present. This season definitely has a minimum age which I wouldn't have said about earlier seasons. I was really sensitive as a kid so my spectrum may be skewed, however.

Ren & Stimpy blazed some unprecedented roads as far as sneaking adult jokes into a kid's cartoon goes, but Adventure Time goes a lot farther by not just going "here, look at a dick" but also exploring some well-thought-out mature adult themes. An episode heavily loaded with symbolism depicting a woman fighting back against chauvinism and unwanted male sexual aggression is something way outside of what I would think of as Kricfalusi's wheelhouse. Adventure Time goes into some Aronofsky/Lynch/Kubrick making-a-thesis-about-the-meaning-of-life territory.

That said, yeah I have to wonder about kids watching the more recent seasons of Adventure Time. In earlier episodes you'd see Jake licking chocolate ice cream coming out of a pod and although you'd get the joke, you could also feel reasonably sure that it would fly over a kid's head.

I just read all of Moynihan's "Forming" comic in like two sittings, and man, that is certainly a comic. It's certainly a pretty comic, and it (and similar stuff) was probably a pretty big influence on Adventure Time even before they hired the guy. Look at the way Pen draws the Ice Kingdom's mountains in the pilot episode, is what I mean.

I re-watched Sons of Mars right after, and it makes much more sense in light of it, because that episode comes from the same mental place that Forming does, but at about 10% power. The whole flying through space in an air cushion without a space-ship thing is done in exactly the same way, the use of historical/mythological characters in redefined roles, the trippy sequences. The grass even looks like it did in the Rhea sequences.

It just makes me a little sad that as good a show as Adventure Time is, it has to be marketed for kids, even if it doesn't fit the demographic sometimes. It's not quite for kids, but it isn't edgy enough to be an adult cartoon on adult swim, and even still is too weird for Fox and the like. :(

Don't let them take away the restrictions of being a kid's cartoon. Ren and Stimpy had that restriction taken away, and it was terrible.

That said, this is from the kid's show original run:

(poo poo Youtube screencaps, but the episode is "Ren's Bitter Half" from Season 3 of 5 total seasons. 1994.)

Okay, seriously, what moments are you thinking of that are so blatant that you'd want to keep children away from them. I mean, it's not like this show is really that offensive with what the subtext is indicating and if your kid is getting the subtext, then stopping them from watching the show isn't going to do anything and if they aren't getting the subtext, it will just fly over their heads and they won't even notice anything.

It's less so much "think of the children" and more that sometimes kids I know don't enjoy certain episodes because they do have such adult themes. It's not necessarily bad, just not quite fitting.

Then again, maybe kids need a little more thought provoking stuff then Doodlebops so what do I know.

Lets not forget that John K. is a creepy rear end in a top hat. Most of the reason "uncensored" Ren and Stimpy sucked was because of him.

Plus, looking at Bravest Warriors is a prerty good testimate to what Adventure Time would be like without the constraints of a kids show. They're very similar shows.

That's why I prefer it to Ren and Stimpy, Ren and Stimpy was pretty vapid children's entertainment with disgusting and grotesque imagery. Adventure Time is really cute and attractive imagery that often hides grotesque subtext. It's more fun to watch and more intellectually stimulating, and also less distressing if you're majorly stoned.

This is basically how I feel. Ren and Stimpy also felt like a very pessimistic, cynical show. I enjoy Adventure Time's upbeat spirit, even in the face of what should be grim or depressing concepts.

I'm still a bit confused about the moral of "Jake Suit". Finn was abusing the power and privilege of wearing his magical best friend/brother as a suit, and if this was a normal cartoon, when it came time for the role reversal, Finn would have conceded that he was in the wrong after Jake was done teaching him a lesson. This kind of gets turned on its head when, in the course of teaching Finn a lesson, it's Jake that starts turning to Finn's point of view, with Finn just not giving a gently caress about anything thrown at him/he throws himself into, and as soon as Jake starts to acquiesce, Finn tosses both of them into a volcano, and it's only the smoochy nurses that finally give Finn pause. Perhaps the moral is that Finn is an ubermensch of an invincible teenager?

gently caress, the thread's title is perfect. Well, the return of the buff baby song made me cry laughing.

FP thinks Finn is a water elemental because he cries and cries all the time, so Finn might be in for some tears this episode if that's what it's referring to. Not sure about the earth part.

From the very beginning this show had a habit of doing the opposite of the typical "moral of the story" cartoon (something I recall being done back as far as Simpsons season 1, maybe even before that, who knows). In Witch's Garden, Jake loses his magical powers and feels remorse over lying and stealing. The instant that the witch grants him his powers back, he punches her and runs off. "Didn't you learn your lesson?" she yells at him, to which he chuckles back "Nope!"

THEN we had an influx of episodes where the "moral of the story" actually became pretty sincere, when they started introducing more complex and sophisticated themes. I think for a while now there's been a mix of "moral of the story" and "the opposite moral of the story"

I think in general if the "moral of the story" is something simple, they tend to turn it on its head. If it's something sophisticated they play it straight.

I think it's implied that FP knows he's human now, especially since she calls him "F the H" in Vault of Bones. Though the water part could still mean tears, like you said.

Adventure Time doesn't care that much about teaching a lesson, making a funny episode is much better.
