Any recommendations for occultish doom bands that rely heavily on organs, choir chants and such? Clean vocals are a must. While I know Ghost is maybe leaning more towards ABBA than Black Sabbath, I'd love to find bands in the same vein.

Bloody Hammers put on a really fun live show and have an organ-heavy, retro-tinged sound (and they're friendly with Ghost). "Fear No Evil" and "Witching Hour" are pretty organ-y.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm already aware of Uncle Acid's magnificently hazy horror movie grooves, and I found Bloody Hammers to be an OK listen too. Blood Ceremony's vocalist grates on my nerves for some reason so I guess I'll have to skip them. While browsing the aforementioned bands on Youtube, I came across Year of the Goat, who seem to offer nice 60s and 70s tinted occult rock à la Graveyard, Horisont and Witchcraft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSIoe6L_IDo

Devil's Blood is the poo poo, but sadly they broke up earlier this year. In other possibly sad news, rumors are going around Facebook sourced back to Invisible Oranges that eyehategod drummer Joey LaCaze has passed away.  No major confirmations yet though, so it could just be a bad source.

Recently had a chance to drip the new Earthless dual EP into my earholes. There is a pretty accurate write-up on The Obelisk: http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2013/08/22/earthless-from-the-ages-review/ It's not Sonic Prayer, by any means. But it certainly doesn't suck either.

Do you want to listen to somewhat blackened sludge, comparable to early Isis, Intronaut, and Swarm of the Lotus, with lyrics entirely about ancient subterranean slugs taking over the planet? Slugdge is the band for you. Despite the somewhat weird theme and the occasionally questionable clean vocals I have been enjoying this a lot. Loving the production, especially that bestial double kick.

Man, over the last several months, Dopesmoker hurtled itself to my number one position. I can't get enough of this album. Most of the time, I listen to it at least once a day. Do you guys know of a way to get a kick-rear end gigantic print of the full cover art? I want this on my wall so badly it hurts.

People started slamming into each other during the last part of the Melvins set so I pushed my way up front only to be grabbed by security and kicked out of the venue for "slam dancing." I would've been pissed, but I had a great time up until that point (The food at that place is incredible, and the Melvins played Night Goat!) and could only laugh when I realized what was actually happening.

Somera Sol and Punk Rock Guilt are a lot better than Saved By Magic, which is probably my least favorite Brant album. Vista Chino is a complete disappointment. Their songs are uninspired, and the production on the album is awful. If John Garcia is as full of himself in person as he is in that interview, I can see why Josh wants nothing to do with him.

Big ambient influence, lots of chanting and poo poo. Not exactly clean vocals, but definitely not black/death metal growls either. Punk Rock Guilt and Gods & Goddesses aren't bad. G&G is the better of the two, he kinda takes a turn in his sound from laid-back desert rock to much more direct and riff-driven stoner rock. I think it works out for him. No one else out there really sounds like him. As far as Vista Chino goes, I'm gonna have to disagree with peeps here and say I enjoyed it. Looking at it as a new Kyuss album is pointless, because nothing they could release could live up to that. At this point, it's just a John Garcia project with Brant Bjork on it, and it's pretty drat good for being that. The second half of the album is great. Not one of my favorite albums of 2013, but it's not terrible. Plus I was super excited to see that Brant gets vocals on one track. Brant seems to get a lot of influence on this record in general, something he never got much of in Kyuss. Adara is one of the best tracks, and that is just pure Brant.

I think the problem was they tried too hard to sound like Kyuss instead of something separate from that. When the album first came out I had to get a second hand copy of a second hand copy from a friend because they only had a limited vinyl release that you had to buy straight from them or something crazy like that originally.

I was listening to Ufomammot today - Snail King, and I really like how they mix in some spacey electronics into their music. What else might I check out? Spotify's recommended artists wasn't very useful. I either know the other bands or they aren't as trippy sounding.

The people in Windhand are legit cool dudes. They are based in my area so I have seen them a good number of times and they work hard to put on hold shows. Wish they would stop playing at Strange Matters though. Place is a shithole full of lovely employees.
