Probably because you have to hold it down to do any damage with it don't you? Do companions use the chainsaw or the ripper either?

I think companions and other NPCs use chainsaws and rippers as if they were in VATS, just a single high-damage attack that ignores DT/DR. Not quite as effective as the player, but still useful. Unfortunately they don't get any benefits from modded weapons either, so that GRA ripper you modded to gently caress and back is useless in Arcade's hands. I'm betting the Industrial Hand is an error; Lonesome Road has quite a few, like Ulysses' duster and variants not having a female model.

All that ammo collecting I've been doing actually came in handy a little bit ago. I'm running around picking up unique weapons. This thing was stupid easy to get, and once I had it, popped a Psycho and Dead Wind Cavern might as well have been populated by a bunch of boatflies, holy crap. It definitely came in handy that 5mm always has a -15DT effect, so I didn't even have to bother with armor-piercing ammo. edit: This is me Friar Zucchini fucked around with this message at 03:30 on Sep 8, 2013 |

I just finally finished Lonely Hearts. Zion was a nice change of pace, and it was thrilling to see the differences between a shithole like the Mojave and the relatively unspoiled and preserved wilderness of the canyonlands. It was especially nice when it rained. I could see my Courier retiring in Zion and partying down with the tribes there. Take drugs. Kill a bear. Also, as melodramatic as he is, I genuinely like Graham. And holy hell, his combat prowess for the short time he's your companion. No wonder people feared him so much when he was Legate. Joshua Graham is pretty great. 99% of that may or may not be from being voiced by Keith Szarabajka.

Let's talk about explosives play throughs. Specifically why the grenade machinegun rocks so much but the number of vendors selling ammo for it is so low. It's so depressing.

Have you tried the quarter master at the dam? If I remember right, he consistently has around a thousand 25mm grenades in stock. Other options: Gun Runners, BoS quartermaster, Boomers, Great Khans.

Good lord, Boone is mean. I was getting murdered by the Cazadores on the quest to get their eggs. So I went and grabbed Boone out of the Lucky 38, come back, he sits on a little hill and takes out the entire nest without being noticed.

If you want maximum carnage efficiency, Boone and Ed-E are like a combat dream team. Ed-E spots them, plays cowboy music, and Boone takes them out before you can even put a bead on them.

It really sucks that you can't craft 25mm grenades when you can craft rockets and so many kinds of hand held explosives. My favorite explosives weapon is probably Red Glare but for some reason when I tried to use it on Legate Lanius it did gently caress all damage. Entire HE rocket magazine to his face took about 1/4 of his health.

The 25mm grenade APW is like a less retarded grenade machinegun, it's semiautomatic, weighs about as much as a rifle and it's upgradeable to 8 in the magazine I think. I love that thing; it plays like a shotgun with absurdly accurate explosive slugs once you upgrade it and that was never not enough in a completionist playthrough for me (full auto might be the reason you're hurting for grenades ). I never had trouble keeping ammo around for it, the gun runners tend to stock a lot of them and I cleaned them out every time they restocked. Don't forget to hit Nellis though, there are lots of explosives to steal in the armory and around the shop in the hangar. Despite having more ammo that he could possibly ever need, Boone just decided that our Deathclaw hunt was getting a little boring and decided to switch to using his knife for no reason whatsoever. He will be missed.

Grabbing Veronica is definitely less effort than those things.

Yeah, if you know what you're doing you can pretty much gain access immediately, just have to kill some scorpions and run from some centaurs. The only tricky thing is taking out that NCR ranger around Level 2-3, because it's unlikely you'll be able to take him in a straight fight or pass the speech check. I've taken to planting dynamite on him, but it feels kinda lame because it's basically save-scumming to both successfully plant it and not get blown the gently caress up in the process.

The .45 auto pistol and "The Light Shining in the Darkness" have been a huge let down to me. I decided to do a gangster gimmick run, using only pistols that fit thematically and wearing only a grimy business suit buffed up the signature armour mod. I had been planning on using the .45 pistols since the start as they seemed like the perfect fit for my character but even with the grunt perk, +P rounds and the signature weapon mod so far I've found them to be frustratingly under powered. Before now I had been using Maria as a stand in and I'd swear it out performs Light. That 6 round mag on Light really sucks. Edit: Just got out of Zion Valley and I've notcied a marked improvement in it's performance, guess there's a big difference between White Legs and Fiends in terms of durability. You're crazy or missing a lot of your shots. ALSiD hits like a brick, for a pistol. While a small mag, it also, unlike the revolvers, lets you fire pretty much as fast as you can pull the trigger, and has a blistering reload. That said, it is a pistol. Off the top of my head, the .44 hits barely harder, Lil Devil hits a lot harder, and the hunting revolver/Sequoia is basically a rifle. All fire a lot slower than ALSiD, though, to the point where ALSiD has a higher DPS than any of them but Lil Devil. Its a great weapon against unarmored targets at close range. Anything else and you'll struggle. Try boosting crits, its got a decent crit chance. edit: If you're using Grunt and the Sig. Weapons mod, you'll be fine with it. In vanilla its just underwhelming because pistols weren't designed to be primary weapons. There's a reason they're basically all a "tier" behind their ammo-equivalent rifles. It makes a great backup weapon for someone using a slower, high-powered rifle, and that's all pistols were supposed to be. That, and sneak-attacks, though the lack of a silencer is going to hurt you. I've discovered that this game can be a major bitch without Sneak, Computers, or Lockpick. Future John Wayne don't need any of that thief poo poo, but like half the quests need that to get the best ending. Still not as bad as my 1 CH no Speech run where I couldn't even recruit Cass.

'best ending' does not necessarily mean that you break every lock and hack every computer, in the (even slightly) grand scheme of things that means nothing. You can still level up, you can still get great gear, you can still get entertaining dialogue, and you can still finish the game without completing a single skill check or picking a single lock or hacking a single computer
