My medication never lies
I'm curious as to where Google comes up with their time figures. They say 1hr 8mins for the commute to San Ramon, but on average would take 1hr 45mins. They also estimate 1hr 58mins for the trip to Salinas, but would often take me 3hrs. I guess they don't figure in heavy traffic? Double those figures for the round trip, 5 days a week and that would explain why I was such a cranky bastard.

You have to consider what it's worth to you, both in terms of actual costs and the mental toll. I'm guessing folks have a longer commute to save on rent, but does that really justify the additional gas/wear and tear (or even the need to have a car in the first place), parking costs, and most importantly, the limited personal time you give up during the work week? Between 6.5 hours of sleep and an 8.5 hour workday, the difference between having 8.5 hours (15 min/way commute) and 7 hours (1 hour/way commute) a day to yourself is pretty loving substantial.

I swear nobody in this loving company knows what a patch panel is. Walljacks are wired straight into switch ports.

To top it off, every 4-10 cubicles are split into "DEPT-ZONEx", and those go to a small switch hidden in a cubicle wall. Then each switch goes to another switch in a closet in that building.

What's the justification for doing this? Everywhere else I've ever been every walljack goes to a patch panel in the same rack, or the rack next to the rack with switches in it. And there are never rinky-dink switches dividing up groups of 8 users.

At the time I was a factory worker manually assembling lifting equipment. My shift ended just after the last ferry, so it was 3 hours of Dennys waiting for the first boat to go home and sleep for 5 hours before turning around and coming back.

Now I'm a mainlander working at MS. Life is funny that way.

Apply anyway. Remember these things are wish lists. The worst thing that can happen is you not working there which is already the current situation. You update your resume?

Also reach out to any industry contacts you have and let them know you're looking for work. Personal networking is responsible for most peoples jobs.

Oh and make sure your LinkedIn account is fully fleshed out. It's a major recruiting tool

This is common for sysadmin jobs, where you require actual skills to be considered for entry level. You should be able to find a job in a NOC/Helpdesk with much less or none, however, which will get you that experience.

Over a year I managed to go from a mind-killing 1.5 hr commute with 2 interchange points to a 30 min direct bus line by: changing jobs (to one slightly closer to town than MordorKista), job moving offices to downtown, and then changing habits to get up in time for the direct bus. Getting it under 30 minutes on public transportation and to a place that is not depressing as gently caress really cut down on the amount of depressive thoughts I was having.

(I later moved closer to town so now I can bike to work :toot:)

AS/400 systems are actually pretty inexpensive. If you have an IBM bladecenter they make AS/400 blades that are only a few thousand bucks. Like everything else, the expense comes with licensing.

Well first off, I have absolutely nothing to do with the AS400. I can install the end user client but that's about it. Saying that, I'm still in all the meetings.

What we've done so far is have the AS400 dump our invoices and purchase orders to pdf on a network share, then Sharepoint imports them on a schedule to be shown on an internal website for end users.

The consultant had to do quite a bit of behind the scenes work before we could even start that project.

Going forward we'll be putting sales data, queries, etc, so users can run these reports themselves instead of asking IT to run them.

We don't have blades. This is just a simple 4U server with an internal tape drive.

Should I test them with a small project first to see how they handle it?
