Use this opportunity to devour Danal's heart to gain some element of whatever his father has. But seriously, it's nice to see this game on track and firing on all cylinders now. I'm fine with most everything we do here, but I'd like to try to play something on our flute to commemorate the battle and what the King did this day. Not the magic one, the real one.

1:B 2:E As much as it might seem enticing to join the battle, we told Tudiya we wouldn't. More importantly, however, is that voice in the back of our head. Is it ours? Something seems fishy about this whole setup, and, finely attuned to, and suspicious of, supernatural shenanigans as we are, this is setting off alarm bells. The minotaur are acting suspicious, fleeing when surely they must have known what awaited them, and who knows what could be reaching into our head; why, any moment we could find ourself flying through the air to be devoured. Nope, grab Danal. If he asks, tell him this doesn't seem right, something's wrong. And try to see what Bareen and her monster-hunters are up to. Trying to catch a minotaur? Why? Awfully convenient.

I like checking out the new names and seeing if I can puzzle out their origins and any possible hints (Og/King Og, Naomi/Naomi, Enkindal/Enkindu, Danal/Daniel, Tudiya/Tudiya, etc etc etc). Sometimes they match up with little hints of what's to come, other times they don't. Either way it's an extra layer of fun for my not-so-inner nerd.

A) We can permit ourselves one small exhaltation. C) Little brother it is time you learned a lesson about something called Honour. Any coward can chase down a broken enemy and stab them in the back, a true hero fights in the vanguard or nowhere at all. A man of honour faces his enemy in the field of glory and lets El decide the victor. And if it is not your day to die you do not take trophies, you do not strut. You clean your sword, tend your wounds, give thanks to El for your fortune and return home to your family. This is Honour, this is what it is to be a hero. And if you ever want to be a hero; look to the example of your father, not to these urchins, scrabbling to claim the flesh of foes slain by better men. Being a Hero will take practice, let us practice together. D) Spar with Danal on the roof, in a way that would be awesome if it were set to the kind of montage music that does not yet exist in ancient not-mesopotamia.

Danal's love of all things related to heroic stories, warfare and combat rivals your own and your own lust for such things is pretty great. While Danal finds "King Stuff" boring and dull, you voluntarily choose to spend large amounts of time trailing after Tudiya as he does "king stuff". You know that Danal is more enthusiastic about heroics, fighting and war than you are. You know that this is very probably the most exciting thing to occur so far in his life. You might convince him or even force him to stay, but you are unlikely to change how he feels about the exciting events he knows are occurring, but which are distant. He may be unhappy or unhappy with you if you hold him back. He saw Tudiya and the Mighty Men fighting a few monsters on the way from Athar, but he is 8 and that was 3 years ago... there are... a great many more monsters out there. He is a person, just like you, it is tough to say how he will feel and how he will react, but it is likely to be a very big disappointment if he has to stay here, unable to clearly see all the fun. Changing my vote to this: 1. Did you yell out "El!" with everyone else? A. YES! EEEELLLLL! 2. As Danal starts to climb down you... A. Hell yeah! I WANT to get where the action is! I climb down with him and we go. 3. If you voted to leave in #2, you want to.... D. Something else. We watched from afar the battle, and how Tudiyah handled it. Danal wants to get closer, and so do we. Turn this into another lesson on patience and virtue. We get closer to the battle, but note how Tudiyah handles himself in the minotaur rout. Also note the prestigious household guard, of them Tudiyah trusts the most to protect his home, his family and possessions. Do they leave their stations in a moment of triumph? That being said, Danal listened to us and our command when necessary. Praise him for this acquiescence and his wisdom in overcoming his urges. In return we walk closer to the action, play fighting along the way. See if someone will help Danal get a trophy for his efforts in protecting the city.

1A 2A/F? 3C We yell ELL! with everyone else! Taken by the moment! We're slightly worried about going to the wall, Tudiya is strong in our mind, but we know how upset Danal will be if we don't go and mentally use that as an excuse. Plus it seems pretty safe now! They're all running off! To balance it, we stay on the wall, don't go onto the battlefield, keep our kid safe.

1. 2. "The minotaurs that are fleeing, flee because they fear your father. If you approach the battle, he will abandon it to go protect you. What happens then? The army and the city will be in grave danger as the minotaurs regroup. You will earn no glory, no trophies, but only the scorn of the survivors. Even if he doesn't notice you, and don't think he won't, what then? Do you have any magic powers? Do you have the strength to wrestle a minotaur and rip off its leg? Or do you only wish you did? In time that wish may come true, but for now, you are a normal boy with normal weapons. You will be no more distinguished than a common foot soldier. As the son of a king, you must be bigger than that. If you want to earn real praise and honor instead, there is still a way. By watching the entire battle from here, we can scout for ambushes and surprise attacks. Perhaps some of the minotaurs that run are only making a show of being afraid, so that we won't expect it when they circle around for the next strike. If that happens and we send out a warning, everyone will be grateful that you saved many lives. Not by taking the path of a soldier, but by taking the path of a king. By relying on your wisdom and putting your people first."

And it's entirely possible that Diogenes was using a literary turn of phrase, not saying that we're actually hearing a voice in our head that shouldn't be there. Possible, yup, but possibly not; the suspicion might largely just be from thinking the minotaur are acting oddly, but suddenly finding ourselves drawn to run with abandon after the fleeing horde, while we've previously been set against it, might make us paranoid. I figure the kid is pretty acutely aware of the possibility of being hosed around with by supernatural forces now. Maybe it is, of course, just a random urge, caught up in the moment, but being safe doesn't hurt. And sure it's not nice seeing your champion torn apart, but hell, it was just one guy, they're a whole horde! And surely they must have expected something, they were marching against a city of known monster-slayers and supermen. The second they see a monster-slaying superman they start questioning their purpose? Just seems pretty oddly abrupt. Either they're a slavering horde that didn't realize what it was getting into, driven by rage to attack, in which case I see them either charging forward or backward rather than dithering about, or they're a composed, intelligent force, who knew what they were up against, and who shouldn't be so surprised. Or maybe it's just a horomonal urge and they're freaked out by Tudiya being tougher than they imagined. I figure Og is maybe a bit paranoid of supernatural goin-ons and wants to know what's happening.

It's not like this logic and appeal to friendship are going to change his mind when he's clearly got his whole heart fixed on going to see the battle. Perhaps if we took him there and showed him the empty murder first hand he might change his mind. Keeping him away from the battlefield will only ensure that idealization of war and battle in his young mind continues.
