Yeah, underwhelmed? I'm surprised anyone was whelmed at all. My first impression is that this is the worst since Frank's Brother.

Maybe I should watch it again.

Yeah, I dunno...I guess it just felt...unbelievable? Like they were trying too hard or something. This show is not known for it's realism by any stretch of the imagination, but I just had a hard time buying any of it. Frank on not just one TV station, but multiple broadcast interviews? The principal from season 6 not instantly throwing Mac and Charlie out on sight? Dennis and Dee screaming about shooting innocent people in a gun shop and nobody bats an eye?

"Realistic" expectations like that are exactly what made the season opener so funny, because at first things seemed unbelievable, then they brought it back at the last minute in a final turn. Another episode that does this was the McPoyle Wedding episode from last season, where the McPoyles were being crazy, but then you find out it was because their milk-punch was spiked with bath salts.

I think Sunny's at its funniest when it's crushing the Gang with harsh realities. And like I said, it got laughs from me, but it's not one I'll watch over and over again like Mac's Big Break or Who Got Dee Pregnant.

If they were trying to be realistic the gang would have been in jail or dead by season 2.

I get that...which is why I put realistic in quotation marks. It's not the exact term to describe what I'm talking about, but "crushed by harsh reality" is a little closer. Frank on TV was just too out there for me to accept, especially accompanied by not-so-closeted pedo Jack Kelly.

If there's a spectrum of verisimilitude, this ep was on the "too ridiculous" end. The series as a whole walks a fine line and does it well.

Oh well, there's always next week.

I feel that Sunny is the kind of show that is always stronger when you marathon through seasons rather than wait a week between the episodes, I recently viewed all seasons in the span of a few days and the new episodes do feel kind of weak but I think that it's mostly due to the weight of expectations. I'm sure that this season will have its share of brilliant episodes and that once it finishes airing and I get to rewatch them it'll be just as funny as previous seasons.

who is that playing the gun vendor? He looks so familiar.

The actor's name is Jeff Kober, and he's one of those 'That guy' actors that show up all over the place. Looking at his IMDB page, he was also on ER, Supernatural, Charmed, the X-Files, Star Trek: Enterprise and Voyager, plus at least one guest spot on just about every crime procedural made in the past 20 years.

Honestly for me it was alright, but for some reason I was really bothered that Frank said 'bullshit' on what was just established to be a live news show and the anchor didn't even acknowledge it. And the closing scene with them talking about needing to get water filters was pretty weak. Not a lot of laugh out loud moments for me, which is not a regular occurrence with this show. You win some, you lose some.

It wasn't my favorite episode but it had some really great bits. I agree some stuff was a little over-the-top, I didn't really like Uncle Jack being so open about his love of children. I've always thought that it's funnier when a character is implied to be something horrible without it just being stated outright. I guess you could say it's the... implication.

Now how is that tasteless?

Also, great callback to Dennis and Dee go on welfare, with the very slight rolling down of the window.

Compared to last weeks episode there were not as many laughs on my end. I enjoyed Charlie just pulling the trigger on his unloaded gun at the slightest provocation.

Guns don't kill people.

I do.
As a huge gun nerd, I thought the episode was hilarious in that it framed both sides of the debate beautifully.

Dennis and Dee were totally anti-gun and spit out all the stupid rhetoric about how easy it is to get a gun, how simple it is, how anyone can just get it, how it doesn't make you safer and then systematically prove themselves wrong and in the end realize they didn't know what they were talking about. That if it is so easy to get an assault weapon why couldn't they get one?

Whereas with Charlie and Mac they went with the stupid pro gun side that talks about how we need to be vigilant and fearful of crime and how goofy that logic is taken to extremes, while also pointing out that anything in a school could be a weapon, they don't really even need guns to cause a massacre and maybe everyone having weapons that they aren't skilled or mature enough to own them isn't that great of an idea.

Meanwhile the news and business owners made money off everyone's fears like they always do.

If anything it felt like a South Park take on a contentious issue showing both extreme positions are pretty moronic.

Well, they could have gotten one at the gun show if they weren't trying to get out of actually paying money for it.

Yeah, South Park was exactly the same comparison I was thinking of too. Take the piss out of both sides of the argument without putting forward their own/'correct' point. Enjoyable episode, although I think maybe expectations were set differently as it was touted as a sequel to 'Gun Fever' which it felt very unrelated from in the end.

I thought it was pretty good, the only part I didn't get real down with was the very end after frank tells the gang theyve been duped, only to get immediately duped again...by the very plan he told them he was going to be doing next. Not a big deal, just kinda eye roll inducing.

Sword vs Gun debate was perfect, Macs T shirt was amazing, and the Indiana Jones thing had me cracking up

Wait, do people really see an issue with Frank appearing on the news all the time? He's loaded, it's practically a plot point now that he just has infinite money, I just filled in a gap in my mind that he paid off the station or the owner or something. Especially with how he kept appearing as a "concerned citizen" or some other bullshit title implying he was just an average joe, who somehow kept appearing for different reasons not even in a Man on the Street segment but actually in the newsroom. I felt like that was a major joke of the episode.

Count me on the side of the underwhelmed. I thought it was too broad and obvious (not that Sunny is a show that prides itself on subtlety). Usually when Sunny lampoons hot-button issues they're much more clever; this felt like a series of obvious talking points presented without much in the way of comment. I mean, it wasn't awful, but Sunny is rarely that.

Exactly. It was similar to Paddy's Pub: Worst Bar in Philidelphia where it ends with the gang going to see the critic.

I love how in "Frank's Back in Business", he acts like a professional businessman and keeps his hair clean, his breath fresh, is very polite to his business associates (obviously not to his underlings), further illustrating that this completely vile lifestyle he now leads was a complete choice he made back in Season 2 when he wanted to become like Charlie.

Gonna disagree. I really like both shows but The League makes me laugh far more often than Sunny does the last few seasons. Personal preference and whatnot I guess. Sometimes Always Sunny feels too much like "Hey, remember when we did this before?" and although I thought this episode was good it just felt like we've been here before. Which I suppose we obviously have, being that it's more or less a sequel episode with 'too' in the title.

The only thing that really was too ridiculous for me was right near the end during the water filter scene when the gang went "Frank you're just like the NRA" and nobody batted an eye. That whole sequence was way too intelligent in the Sunny universe for me. Everything else was on the "who the gently caress cares" level, because the gang gets away with so much poo poo in general.
