There's also the Morning Star, which you might be thinking of. Generally a lot better than the Mirror in terms of content, it's a leftist newspaper, heavily associated with the unions.

A 58 year old retired private investigator was just arrested by Operation Tuleta. Not sure I'm allowed to speculate who it is, but it's pretty easy to figure out.

Dirty Richard Desmond also owns Channel 5 and its subsidiaries. A few years ago they replaced their legally required evening news segment with a panel show involving a former footballer, a former topless model and... Someone else? The panel discussed vaguely news related topics. Quite oddly for a supporter of a fascist street gang Mr Desmond also holds aspirations of knighthood. Given the source of his fortune and general behaviour this is unlikely to come to pass.

If I remember how that garbage went down properly, it was the Editor, Dawn Neesom who was pushing the EDL stuff and Dirty Des was the one to actually tell her to cut it out once he got a barrage of angry advertisers threatened to pull advertising if they kept it up and it wasn't helped by Richard Peppiatt's resignation letter going viral. Which lead to a big and embarrassing climbdown alongside a huge anti-EDL article in the Sunday edition that week. Someone who allows blatant racist baiting articles in his papers toeing the line at actually supporting fascists? Shocking. Who does he think he is? Paul Dacre?

I have a cultural inquiry. What is it with you Brits and having tits in your news (or "news")? No other country I know of has as much tits plastered all over such a socially acceptable and wide spread medium as a daily 'paper'. What's going on here, or am I just horribly sheltered about other countries' papers?

I'm not sure where it came from, I'm guessing the 60's when the sexual revolution was happening but has become a perverse version of itself. I did have a link to a cool video someone did about this but I can't find it... so no ideas why I mention it.

Some of the more, er, 'populist' papers like to run a softcore porn section, the most well known being The Sun's Page 3. A 'Page 3 Girl' is someone who regularly features in newspaper nude shoots. As to why they do it, well, easy sales? I guess? I would imagine the logic is as crude as: "How get man buy newspaper? What man want? Man want tits! Man want excitement! Man not care for accuracy in story, journalistic integrity substitutable for volume. Man get tits and sensationalist news by buying newspaper! Man pleased with purchase, keep newspaper relevant in modern age of internet and news channels." Essentially those newspapers are sort of the male-oriented equivalent of gossip rags for women, only instead of talking about soaps they talk about why immigrants are evil and why everything gives you cancer and why you should vote BNP and other stupid crap like that. Just as grounded in reality as the soaps, obviously, but appealing to the particular taste of the bloke in the pub stereotype. OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 21:27 on Sep 18, 2013 |

Orange Devil posted:Yes I know all this but presumably this holds true for all countries everywhere, and yet to my knowledge it's primarily British news that has a daily tits forecast. Somehow it's become an institution. I mean the why isn't that hard to understand, it's soft porn in the newspaper for men to leer at, so it sells - and people resist any attempt to change it. It's not that unusual to see the pictures cut out and stuck on the wall in some workplaces, where there's no political correctness culture ruining everything. Honestly I think it's sort of an extension of the 'saucy seaside postcards'/Carry On thing which might also be a British phenomenon? It was always a sort of fresh-faced young smiling girl (sometimes 16 years old believe it or not) and some stupid oo-er cheeky blurb about how the woman has a certain job/hobby/interest so *related 'sexy' joke*, so it fits with that whole culture. Of course even in 2013 it's hard to actually push this back and get systematic objectified nudity out of a major newspaper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwpE9e_Rqkk "haw haw! The very idea!" (no idea why that's hosted on some UKIP guy's channel but hey)

Zedsdeadbaby posted:I'm quite interested to hear more about this, or is this massive hyperbole? What with all of the stuff about TV personalities getting nobbled for knobbing children, it does seem like noncery is a sort of affectation of the wealthy. And, naturally, becoming extremely wealthy by the right sort of means is a shoe in to get you a knighthood. I don't know if there's a causative relationship there but I wouldn't be surprised by a correlative one.

Look at Operation Yewtree (the thing kicked off by the discovery that Jimmy Savile OBE had been loving children (dead or alive) on a massive scale). A decent amount of the people arrested and charged have knighthoods.

Ahhh, The Sport. That takes me back, got me through my teenaged years, I once worked out it had 3 tits per page even when not including the adverts for the the porn lines at the back. Ultimately it comes down to the UK still having a problem with sex that comes from the Victorian era. Holland/The Netherlands managed to get over that protestant nonsense a long time ago, probably the drugs.

Movement again on the charter. News UK and Associated Press (Publishers of The Sun and the Mail, respectively) are rejecting the royal charter even with some amendments and refusing to sign up. I suspect this thing is going to be a clusterfuck and not go anywhere. Also Police Officer and his wife arrested as part of Operation Elveden this morning as well.

Couple of new pieces on my blog: 10 To Watch From The Home Affairs Select Committee http://brown-moses-hackgate.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/express-investigations-what-wittamore.html The trials and Daniel Morgan Panel are starting towards the end of the month, so expect a new thread, and lots more coverage from then on. It's been quite frustrating not being able to discuss a lot of stuff that's been going on because of reporting restrictions, for example the flurry of court appearances over the last 6 months as the lawyers try to pull various tricks, so it'll be good to actually have something to be able to write about. I've also met Alastair Morgan, brother of Daniel, who has been campaigning for a proper investigation into his brother's murder, and we've had some very long and interesting conversations. He seems happy with the panel, the people leading it are a solid bunch (details here), so hopefully it'll make good progress unraveling the tale. Again, frustratingly there's a lot of really interesting stuff I can't write about because of reporting restrictions, even detailing the background is difficult in light of arrests. You can read my pre-arrest article on the murder here, but it really only touches the surfaces, it's a 25 year network of police corruption, so there's a lot to find out.
