How did no one get shot doing that kind of poo poo? Any time I was on armed guard duty, if I wasn't praying for death, I was hoping some poo poo would pop off.

Yep, one of the last units to be wiped out defending hitler's bunker was a French SS unit. Also, France doesn't like to talk about it much but a pretty large number of Frenchmen signed up for the pro-Vichy Milice, which were propagandized as brave Frenchmen fighting the communist menace. They carried out some staggeringly brutal actions against their fellow Frenchmen. When the US landed in North Africa and the resistance openly helped the allies against the Vichy French forces, they were thrown in jail and executed by the local French authorities even after the Allies were in control because politics. After the war, there was some pretty brutal reprisals by Resistance members against pro-Nazi / Vichy members. Then again, some Vichy government members managed to rehabilitate themselves and maintain positions in the government and security forces because they were reliably anti-communist. Also today's France is sort of a different country than the one at the start of WWII. This is the Fifth goddamned Republic. They started over around 1958 I think, and basically wiped the slate clean.

French Socialists were more gung-ho about certain aspects of the National Socialist agenda than the Germans, particularly the expulsion and later extermination of undesireable minorities. It's little surprise that they would sign up in zeal to fight Commie Slavs, despite ideological differences that were largely semantic. Vichy remnants remained around at least until Mitterand left office in '95, and probably only faded at that point because they'd aged and died out.

On the eastern POW's ending up way west tip, here is one of my favorite things. Japanese dude gets captured in Manchuria, ends up working his way though the Gulag system all the way across the Soviet Union, before he finally gets released in Bulgaria to go home. Drew the whole experience up as a series of single panel comics. After the rains have ceased we had horse drench injections. Man, that was painful. It was experience that caught the breath.
