Diafthora posted:Can you elaborate with some step by step info on this? Hopefully I'll have more info soon. I just got my device whitelisted for testing. Basically I'm going to to write a server that transcodes files via ffmpeg into a format the Chromecast can actually read. Typically that means converting the audio to AAC. I'll eventually have a simple video player app on the Chromecast that simply takes a video URL and plays it through a native HTML5 pride player. I'm having trouble getting ffmpeg to write an mp4 file to a piped stream because the format requires modifying the file header when the transcoding has completed. I may try to write the piped output in chunks and stream the chunks out. Who knows, something is bound to work.

Has anyone gotten a problem in Chrome where it just re-downloads the file you're trying to play in a tab?

Happened a few times with files I don't think Chrome can read.

Zeike posted:Wish I could understand that Well I've got audio transcoding working! I can get an MKV video to play via the HTML5 video tag in a page. Now I just need to get the simple html file onto my chromecast and it should be good. Edit: It seems that just simply casting the tab from my laptop works perfectly fine. I'll try to get a basic set of instructions and repository to download the app from tomorrow night. Ethereal fucked around with this message at 04:21 on Sep 16, 2013 |

I finally got mine about a week ago and we've only used it with Netflix in the bedroom. It works great for that and I'm looking forward to other apps.

I've ended up hardly using this thing. Its just too problematic with my setup apparently. Looking forward to Ethereal's little hack.

I snagged one at a local Best Buy this weekend, works like a champ! Setup in 5 minutes, streaming HD Netflix a minute later. I've only used it for netflix, but as oye como va (Tito Puentes!) says, i'm looking forward to other app integration. All in all, I love this thing.

It's finally made me use Netflix. Already sitting on the couch with an ipad, it's just easy to throw a "rerun" on, even though I have an HTPC full of stuff.

Alright everyone, here is my basic sort of transcoder for the Chromecast. It's pretty straightforward and only works with a single file. If you know Node and want to contribute, or if you are a web designer and want to build a cool UI, feel free to. https://github.com/maherbeg/mkvcast There aren't any instructions for other OS's, but the basic gist is that you need to install ffmpeg and NodeJS, run npm to install this files dependencies and then go. If someone wants to write instructions for other platforms, feel free!

Chromecast is in desperate need of a moving home screen or a screensaver when not in use. I found this out after falling asleep while watching a youtube video last night. (Ask me how much I like having "Ready to Cast" layered over all my TV watching)

Weird, my Chromecast swaps out wallpapers and moves around the home screen content every now and then. Does yours not do that?

I don't think the screen that comes up after watching a YouTube video moves around. Could be wrong though. I've got burn in a few times on my plasma from it. Nothing that stays around for long but so far I've been able to not leave it on for long without something playing.

Plasma TVs are still potentially subject to burn-in. With LCDs, it's generally not an issue.

The background changes I think though.

I was in the states the other day and finally picked one of these up at a Best Buy. Had my doubts about how easy this would be to set up for use in Canada, but turns out it was incredibly easy and it works amazingly well. Only tried Youtube and Netflix so far, but it's pretty loving awesome for $35.

Yeah, I have seen the "Ready To Cast" move slightly around the screen along with the wallpaper changing. It doesn't bounce all over like a Windows 95 screensaver, but it doesn't stay in the exact same place all the time.

So I just noticed that if I'm playing something on Netflix via the PS3 app, I get Chromecast quick controls in the notification drawer on my tablet that allow me to pause, rewind 10 seconds, and stop playing. How long has that been a thing? 'Cause that is awesome.

Well, after fighting to fix the audio issues I was having with my chromecast (unlistenable stuttering) someone suggested it might be a bad unit, so I returned it. Grabbed another today...and same thing. Is there a particular wireless security type that it doesn't like? I'm on a 2.4Ghz router, so should I change to a different channel?

Shadowgate posted:Does it only do it when casting from a tab? How does it work when casting a youtube video or netflix video with the app? Casting from the YouTube and Play Music apps result in trash audio. I get about 0.5 seconds worth of sound every 3-5 seconds. Video seems fine. From Netflix, the video is okay, but the audio stutters every 2-3 seconds for the first minute or so, then smooths out (not terrible, but still pretty frustrating). Casting a local video in a Chrome tab seems to be okay (only tried with a short clip). If I get crazy and cast a YouTube tab, the audio isn't bad, but the video is choppy. I have a 60Mbps connection and my tv is less than a foot from my router.

I would certainly try changing the wifi channel, there may be too much interference even with them being in close proximity.

Try it without security on and see if that fixes it.
