An uncountable number, to be sure.

I think it's pretty well assumed that Medicine is a tsukumogami. I think it was commonly accepted before TH10 even came out.

More importantly, nobody wants her around, in or out of canon.

Also pretty well assumed that Satsuki Rin was dummied out of EoSD but that was asked anyway. I've heard enough confusion on the tsukumogami matter in various places that having a definitive answer to this sort of thing would be helpful in some sense, as opposed to no sense. Not that I particularly care about Medicine either; she was just a random example.

Also, this is meant to be mostly joking in that all these questions are stupid, but I feel like if the point of asking about some obscure non-fact is just to prove your nerd-cred, which it surely is, asking about something like Satsuki is just... Does anyone seriously care about a non-character like they? Can they? Is that even possible?

I think the biggest obstacle to Satsuki Rin fully manifesting is that there's currently another character named Rin. I don't think that's the kind of decision you'd make as a creator if you were still leaving an opening for someone.

Nobody calls Ms Kaenbyou "Rin", though. She's known as "Orin", both in-game and among the fans.

It's a nickname that also shows up as her romanized name in the boss fight. Her name is portrayed as "Kaenbyou Rin" in all official material like profiles and her text box and SoPM and whatnot. I mean, it's hardly a secret that her nickname is Orin and everyone's going to call her that, but that doesn't magically overwrite her actual name.

True, but asking that at a panel about the game series is kind of a grey area of creep: It's certainly legit for someone to ask "what is your opinion of American beer so far", but get too personal and it gets kinda stalkerish.

Is anything of substance going to come out of this con, or is it nothing but a bunch of chucklefucks asking ZUN stupid and/or creepy questions? I mean, does he also have the Kotakus and Siliconeras of the world lined up so he can talk to actual journalists? I imagine not.

I'm sure it's a cool experience for him, and for the people at the con, but why should anyone else care about this more than whatever he says in normal conversation to random dudes at Comiket or whatever?

A lot of ZUN's tweets have him being surprised he has such a large foreign fanbase. Considering that importing Touhou games is a pain in the rear end, it would be nice if this trip inspires him to make the games a little more global!

Also because it's fun and Touhou related, but clearly that doesn't belong here.

My first instinct would be to say, "If he's never cared about that before, why would he start now?", but I suppose rationally knowing that you have a bunch of fans somewhere else is a bit different from flying to a convention 10,000km away and seeing a room full of them in costume, shouting questions at you in a foreign langauge. That might change your perspective a bit.

There would be so many logistical problems for him to deal with, though, and he's just one guy with no real interest in commerce. I don't see it happening, unless it just meant downloading his games in Japanese from a janky store on his website. poo poo, that would be good enough for me. But I don't think it would be good enough for most people.

I think this is the biggest problem, really, though depending on how complicated it'd be (I'm no computer expert), the 'download for $$$' plan on a website could work. That said, FractalSandwich, I think you underestimate just how many people would readily pay for a digital version of the games. As long as he doesn't price it too high (maybe 1-2 beers' worth per game? :v:), he could make some serious bank.

"I won't say no" translates into "but I won't agree to it either", doesn't it? Either that, or he'll bring around someone like Kotohime or one of the other characters that was only in Dim.Dream and frequently bottoms out the popularity polls.

To be honest, I'd be kind of creeped out if I made something with a 99% female cast and only saw a bunch of guys cosplaying it, too. :stonklol:

I didn't really get that part of his confusion because in GLORIOUS NIPPON there's a very high proportion of male Touhou cosplayers, too.

It wouldn't be that cheap, though. I can't imagine he would be willing to undercut the existing doujin retailers, and prices like that just wouldn't fly among people who are used to getting their games for $2.50 in a Steam sale, or even less in a Humble Bundle.

I'd pay for Touhou 15 at full price. You'd pay for Touhou 15 at full price. Maybe everyone in this thread would pay for Touhou 15 at full price. But I don't think J. Random Fan would. I don't think most of them are really interested in the games themselves even when they feel like they can pirate them guilt-free. If they were expected to pay anything for them now? Forget about it.

So you're saying fans who don't give ZUN a single dime would continue to not giving ZUN any money for his products? I don't see how those people factor into a decision to make the games more readily available to Western fans.

Personally speaking, it's that very fact about the fandom surrounding this game that has a 100% female cast, that was a high barrier to entry for me in the first place. Like it or not, it is very intimidating that the most visible thing about the franchise -- its large fan-base-activity -- is so heavily dominated by males.

Basically that. Even without localization, he'd still need infrastructure to handle who knows how many people trying to buy the game all at once on launch day.

I know there are Japanese digital distribution services; I've bought a couple of fangames that way. But I don't know how reliable they are. (In one case: not at all, in my experience.)

Would Touhou on Steam be something that might get the platform a foothold in Japan? I know PC games are "dead" there but it feels like that would be the thing that could lead to a revival, or somewhat of one.

Yeah, the same was true for me. There's been a considerable amount of time between me learning about Touhou and actually trying the games out because I assumed it would be some really creepy poo poo. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that not only were the games pretty good, the characters weren't that weird-rear end nerd-pandering ~moe~ crap I expected them to be. Unfortunately it seems like a significant portion of the fan-base wants Touhou to be just that, which is why I just stick to official works by ZUN and to this thread.

Touhou is not nearly big enough to do that. Pretty much the only thing that could would be a PC only Draqon Quest, and fat chance of that.

It's not like they don't have Steam or anything over there, it's just that the console and portable market is flooded over there, while the PC market consists solely of VNs, doujin games, and western games.

VNs in the Japanese market are honestly mostly porn, as well as being ludicrously expensive.

While there are a lot of good doujin games, there seems to be some sort of weird aversion to digital distribution. Most are only sold in limited numbers at events like Comiket. Touhou's the only real mega-hit to come out of the doujin game scene I can think of, and even it's still tied to the same backwards distribution schemes. It's sold at events, then copies trickle out to specialty shops nationwide.

Western games, for whatever reasons, honestly aren't even on the radar outside of a small cult following. A lot of games that are huge hits all around the world flop in Japan due to lack of interest. Some major studios don't even bother releasing there. Plus you have the same issues we have with Japanese games of shoddy localizations, even sometimes on AAA titles.

Combine that with the PC having traditionally had a comparatively low acceptance rate among general consumers in Japan compared to other countries and you have an ingrained image over there of PC gamers mostly being gross nerds masturbating to porn games or indulging in bloody murder simulators. Add to that that all their major gaming companies are either console makers or have been in bed with console makers for decades and nobody's really rushing to change that paradigm.

Like Blitzblast said, the only thing that would likely be able to shake it up would be a true killer app that was PC exclusive, competitively priced via digital distribution, and probably domestically made. Something like Dragon Quest would do it, but that's just wishful thinking. An example of something like what you might expect would be something like Idolmaster, which was pretty much the only thing keeping Japanese 360 sales alive for a long time.
