When the drug test comes back positive for performance enhancing drugs.
Just started watching the LP. I really liked Vesperia when I played it back when it released.

I don't really get the hate for Karol. In combat, he's pretty strong, and character wise, he probably has the best overall arc. Hopefully he'll grow on you guys, but since Vicas has already beaten the game, maybe not...

Also his Arte names own because he's a child so he tries to make all of his abilities sound as cool as possible.

Karol isn't helped by being one of the most universally hated JRPG archetypes. By simply being the kid character, people default to disliking him.

Why does it matter that he's good later if he's kinda poo poo now? He's better than Estelle though. Offensively dumb is better than offensively boring.

I think it's more the bumbling idiot archetype that attracts people's ire than kid per se.

Don't get it twisted who your enemies are.
I hate slow, heavy attackers so I never bothered using Karol but I never really minded him as a character, though I have a pretty high tolerance for dumb anime stereotypes as long as there's some decent characters to pick up the slack (Yuri and the two remaining party members more than make up for Karol and Estelle)

Karol is pretty drat good for his archetype, but he is just perfect for making fun of in early game. Hell, it actually make his character arc better if you do.

Go Team Murphy! Running out of Life Bottles is the absolute worst though, especially if you're playing on any of the higher difficulty levels. Bosses don't give a gently caress if you're dead, dying, or recently deceased but got better - the hits just keep coming!

It bugs me that there seems to be no real reason that the party is even following Yuri around to begin with. Repede is his dog so that makes sense. Estelle only seems to be there because the plot heavy-handedly has Flynn's next stop always be the same as Yuri's. Karol seems to have no reason not to just bumble off and do his own thing, and Rita just flat out says, "I'm following you now," and no one even asks for an explanation. It's like the game just says "They've joined the party now don't question it."

Karol pretty obviously looks up to Yuri, and he has no real idea what he wants to do yet - it makes sense that he'd follow Yuri around.

Karol doesn't really have a reason to join the party beyond what Endorph said about looking up to Yuri, but the plot is very soon going to make it obvious that he also doesn't have anywhere else to go, either

I think there are a bunch of people who can create trailing images. I know some who could do this as if they were just going out for a stroll.
Rita also has a reason for coming with you, minor spoilers. In the scene before the Shaikos Ruins boss fight, when Estelle heals Rita, Rita noticed something weird with Estelle's blastia -- just like Yuri did back in the castle.

Estellise follow Yuri because she is a spoiled [REDACTED] and wants to see the world, and then Follow him for more concrete reasons. Rita at first uses Yuri to get those Blastia thief taken care of, and then Follow him because of PLOT. Karol follow him because he is lonely and wants to be a hero.

So wow that boss is way easier with two people, when I first did it everybody decided to run up to him and do nothing getting themselves killed quickly.

Yeah, I know the game's got to give explanations eventually. Right now it just feels strange that a bunch of people are traveling together, none of them have given reasons for doing so, and nobody is asking. I'm kind of surprised that Yuri Repede hasn't started bitching about the awkward and annoying bunch of groupies tagging along. It's one of my bigger jRPG gripes that the explanation seems to be "Party is Party because Party." I mean at least some games have the decency to give everyone common goals.

To be honest I don't think I've ever played a jrpg other than Chrono Trigger, FFT and maybe FF9 that made me think "wow this story is really well crafted and I'm so into it I can't stop playing". Every single jrpg I've played always ended up having dull, power-of-friendship telegraphed plots and characters. I haven't played many but to me that seems to be the trend. To be even more honest I'm making an active effort to follow this LP because honestly this game is so loving boring and uninteresting, I'm just leaving it on another monitor because I enjoy the chatter while working on stuff.

I'm pretty sure that to enjoy jrpgs you have to be either an anime spaz or a grinding/farming addict.

eh, there's different levels of enjoyment you can get out of jrpg stories. Personally I would say ToV has an okay story with fun characters that more than make up for it. It's a silly game but aren't they all?

Yeah, Yuri is just going with the flow because he doesn't want to bother with the plot. He's pretty much what you would get if you put like, Squall and the dude from the big lebowski in a blender and made a JRPG around him.

Karol just has some tough competition. He would be one of the best characters in say, Symphonia, but here he has to compete against a dog smoking a pipe. Plus he's one of those characters that's just really fun to make fun of even if you don't hate him.

Of course, it's a matter of tastes. I tend to sound like a oval office when it comes to japanese games because I just can't stand the plots and the characters and the dialogues even if I might vaguely enjoy the game mechanics. It doesn't help when most of the game looks like it's just padding for the dating sim cutscenes and dialogues...

Never played a Persona so I can't tell, what I meant is it just looks like it's railroading you through the plot (like most jrpgs) with the help of cutscenes and dialogues that don't seem like rewards for having taken genuine interest in fellow party members, they're just there to throw in some cheap fluff that didn't require animating characters.

Of course I always end up sounding so bitter and grumpy because I harbor an inherent dislike of this sort of cookie-cutter mass-produced jrpg and I'm just here to listen to funny people say funny things, I don't want to derail the thread to discuss the merits of japanese games.

Vesperia is a fun game with a decent plot until certain characters begin to play bigger parts within the story. Then everything starts to go down hill. Also I am fine with Karol 99.9% of the time, it's just one particular line of his made me want to strangle him with his own intestines.

If you're complaining about Skits, then yeah, they're just there for fluff. Some of them tell you where to go, or explain a little about something you just picked up, but in the end they're there to cut down on the time spent in actual cutscenes and lets people who are too impatient to watch them just go ahead and play instead. It's actually a fairly smart way of doing things in my opinion, despite not understanding why you would play a JRPG if you can't handle cutscenes. Some of the more hidden skits can also be pretty funny, as a little reward for people who go out of their way to see them all.

By the way Kuvo, you missed the skit where you aren't allowed to use any items for the first third of the game :spergin:

I have a theory that the AI just rolls a die to decide what it's going to do next, because it sure as hell doesn't pay attention to status effects or enemy resistances.

Their reason for being there wasn't as much questioned as it was offhandedly mentioned, which is almost worse because it highlights the lack of any noticeable motivation without providing any. I mean, if you're going to put your life in someone's hands while picking fights with giant monsters, it's nice to at least know why that other person was there to begin with. I know Yuri's kind of chill, but that still screams jRPG logic to me.

I've never had a problem with healing AI. When I get afflicted with a status effect, Estelle or Karol is usually on it (though they sometimes keep trying to heal my HP when I'm poisoned). Enemy resistances are pretty easy to set up yourself. Just turn off the spells you don't want to use if it matches a resistive element.

Eh, depends how you define "bullshit". Yeah, it has a lot of arbitrary and confusing missable forever steps, but there's at least two that require a ton of grinding to complete that I hate even more. (Of course, I've long resigned myself to using sidequest guides in JRPGs because I just take it as a given that I'll need it to resolve at least one bullshit sidequest. So I'm probably not as worked up about it as I could be).
