A traffic light would make matters worse - you'd end up with 2-3 cars routinely stuck in the intersection after the light turns red with nowhere to go.

I'd probably be a bit pissed too if people using an offramp/onramp as an extra lane were adding an extra 5-10 minutes to my commute just to enter or exit the highway. Not to mention traffic merging back with the highway at the end probably makes things worse overall since nobody knows how to merge with traffic.

Ah, now that I've seen the interchange that makes more sense. That said, why don't they just take the road that goes under the bridge (with the two yields painted on the road) and not even bother with that intersection?

Edit: what the hell? So I guess it's because that's "buses only". They actually have a bus stop on the highway? That's loving bizarre.

It's kinda common depending on the layout, unfortunately. People do it on the 24 West before Caldecott tunnel, for example.

For sure but not to the extent of that interchange. In some interchanges I've seen its completely legal but then you get caught on a metered exit light or a merge lane that ends in a quarter mile negating any time benefit.

In the marinwood case , the merge lane that leads to it coming from the north extends all the wy back to the previous exit of a few miles.

It's not a big bother to me, but I was curious why the CHP was making GBS threads on everyone there all week.

The cop immediately flipped his lights on and blocked the guy off.

Why don't you just go to the loving turn lane at least, I mean jeez. Guy went over two double yellows. With a police car right behind him.

This is probably more CA based material, but I'll share it here. I was riding in to work yesterday morning and came to a stop light behind traffic. I split up the center (legal, or technically not illegal here) with plenty of room on either side. While I'm passing a gold Mercedes wagon the woman pulls over to block me and gets close enough the she folds my side mirror up when she made contact. I pull in front of her and she jumps in the turn lane to her left and runs the red light to get away. I was pretty much in shock and didn't react. I'd like to have called the cops and reported a hit & run, but I didn't get a plate #. I was also hesitant to go after her or anything. She already assaulted me with a 2 ton hunk of metal unprovoked, I wasn't sure if she would do worse if I went after her. In the end I just rode the 1/2 mile to work and let it go.

I seriously think I'm going to pick up a Go-Pro.

Technically this doesn't fit here because it's not a road. More than once during business hours when there are many people wandering around the mall I've seen stray cars driven through there. It's pretty obvious cars have no business being there. Yet the occasional person somehow misses this. Some honk at people that dare to be in their way. Others look confused and just crawl along looking at the shops while waiting for people to get out of their way.

I'd kill for a dash cam setup where the camera can be permanently installed without drawing attention. Think a tiny bullet cam, wired to some kind of control box out the way. It should also start and stop recording automatically when power as applied, and recycle storage as needed. Currently I just use my GoPro, but keeping it charged, mounting it every time I drive, and constantly wiping the memory keeps me from using it every time I drive.

This exactly, i have been looking for something i can clip to my rearview mirror or atleast hide properly, i dont like ones with a suction cup because it would leave a circle on the windshield which results in someone smashing the window on your parked car looking for a precious GPS device.

Awesome "road rage dick waving nearly causing an accident" not but 10 minutes ago on my way home from work. My drive home from work involves travelling on a main thoroughfare somewhat like a b-road, but with actual traffic lights up to the intersection I turn off. Where I turn off is the last traffic-light regulated intersection for about another 10 or 20 miles, and most traffic will turn off here. The light prior to is about 1.5 miles before it, and there's a sign at warning of the intersection 1/2 mile before. For you Canton/Massillon area goons, I was on 21 at Cherry, with Lake as my turn off. For those not in the know, this stretch inevitably becomes something of a drag race merging cluster gently caress at the best of times.

So, light at Cherry turns green, I'm in the left lane, accelerate, SUV in right lane accelerates away a bit faster, and I get the feeling he's going to be that guy that will try to race me if I attempt to pass him before getting over, so I just file in behind him. A Ford Focus behind me decides he's Speed Racer, zips past me, and gets in front of the SUV at about the 1/2 mile sign. SUV feels he has been insulted and must prove his status as the dominant or lose honor. So, he jinks over into the left lane and races the Focus. There's a red light ahead, with the protective arrow just activating for both directions. The cowardly Focus in the right lane brakes for the light, while the mighty SUV uses this opportune show of weakness to cut off the Focus, and blitz the red light while making his right turn onto Lake. Against opposing traffic which has the protective arrow. The cowardly Focus about followed suit, but hit his brakes, afraid he'd collide with traffic. He quickly attempted to save face by zipping up to the next intersection and turning left, I assume to chase the SUV which had just dishonored him.

Yeah, I don't know what the hell, it's Thursday night and not even a full moon.

There's actually a semi-similar situation in my town: people failing to notice a sign change because they're familiar with the area and change is too difficult of a concept to grasp. We have a rail line running through town, and since it's a fairly wealthy area the town jumped at the chance to become a "quiet zone" when that law came into effect. For those who don't know, quiet zones are areas where trains are not allowed to blow their horns at crossings except in emergencies (normally it is required at all crossings, 2 longs, 1 short, 1 long). The law however states that either the gates must block the road completely in both directions, or there must be a median dividing the road at the crossing to prevent people from going around the gates. For some reason the town chose to lengthen the gates at two roads AND turn them into one-way streets. Naturally, two years later people still occasionally treat them as two-way streets. Probably because they're pretty much the only one-way streets in a town with lots of narrow two-way streets.

Frankly I think quiet zone laws are a stupid idea, but then, I like the sound of train horns.

solution: burn down the mansions. Then run for the senate so you can get those roads fixed.

We're in the business of extending man's senses.
Last night I was coming home from Home Depot with my dad and a pair of buckets of really heavy roofing compound in the trunk. (and no, my dad was not in the trunk.) Some guy in a Subaru WRX (no STI), with no rear license plate (not even a dealer plate or paper thing in the window) evidently got mad that I took off from a light faster than he did, so he spent the next couple of miles weaving through the traffic in order to try to get in front of me. I eventually ended up (still in front) in the middle lane, and him behind me and to the left; he proceeds to race ahead of me through the goddamn ending lane, and barely scrape in front of me without hitting me or the median. I was too shocked to honk at him, unfortunately.

Why do people do this? I'm entirely sure his car was worth more than mine.

Yeah, pretty much, though the timing of 21/Lake and Lake/Eire usually change at night, so typically it should be green if you aren't speeding (but then you'll get stuck with a red light at Lake/Eire if you make that turn). And short of driving through downtown, I have to run that leg every day to work.

I know that a few of the people in this thread are in MA with me. I ride my bicycle about 3.5 miles from Somerville into Cambridge every day for work. I just ordered a Mobius Action Cam, which is more or less a TicTac box that shoots 1080P video for $80.

The biggest thing on a daily basis that gets to me is just how many people never use their turn signal. This has been a real problem at one intersection I ride through on my way home every day. You have to turn "left" or right, but the two roads are meeting at a steep angle, so going left is almost just going straight, and turning right is a super sharp bend. Also there's no light, just a stop sign. A solid 90% of the time, people are going leftish, very rarely using their turn signal, which is reasonable given that it's basically straight. Because of this, I usually pull up on the right side of anyone waiting to pull out, and usually we more or less pull out at the same time and everyone is happy.

Most of the time when people are turning right, they angle their car in some sort of reasonable way for the concept of making a 120 degree right turn, and I just wait for them. Every few weeks though, someone will be pulling more or less straight into the intersection, no turn signal, and then suddenly be turning right into me. Obviously I'm not 100% faultless there, but I always look both at the turn signal and the car angle.

I kicked someone's car for the first time a few weeks ago. Davis Sq. if anyone knows it. There's a big 5 way intersection, with three of the streets being one way. I'm coming up Highland Ave, planning on traveling straight across onto Holland. There's three lanes on Highland, left turn, straight, and right turn. I always straddle the line between straight and right when I'm going straight. One day I'm doing that, and I go slightly past some lady in a white sedan, who's in the middle lane. Far enough that she should have seen me. Then she comes up next to me right as we're getting to the intersection, throws her right turn signal on (still in the middle lane), and turns right. I was next to her and couldn't see her rear signal, but her car had a signal on the side near the front that I could. I literally had time to think "holy poo poo is she turning?" and then making an emergency right hand turn to avoid colliding with her.

I got up next to her about 60 seconds later and couldn't help but give her car a rather ineffective kick as I went by.
