Why the hell did Cisco decide to gently caress with the IOS syntax on ASAs? I keep trying to use "do" or typing "sh ip in br" like you do on EVERY OTHER CISCO DEVICE and the ASA just smugly informs me it has no idea what I am asking.

You're lucky to get 1 GB in Canada.

They typically have a 6 GB "deal" around when a new iPhone launches, but that'll lock you into a 2-3 year contract.

Internet is probably better than Australia, but worse than much of the world, including third-world.

There are at least options nowadays for resellers with effectively unlimited bandwidth, but the "big 3" (Rogers/Bell/Telus) have been loving with them every chance they get. The problem is that the big companies control the "last-mile" of infrastructure -- lines to homes -- which are supposed to be opened to third parties by federal regulation. Also one of the more popular resellers, TekSavvy, basically grew too big. They became popular through word-of-mouth at how great their service was, but even getting someone to answer your call now is an exercise in frustration. (No out-of-country call centres at least?)

I seriously lucked out recently. I live in a downtown Toronto condo and the building got fibre hooked up. Completely independent of those horrible companies, amazing speeds, unlimited bandwidth, reasonable cost. Also just an ethernet jack in the wall.

In the US, Verizon Wireless (the largest carrier by far), currently charges $60 for 2GB on its "Share Everything" plan. All other devices on your account share this 2GB. Overages are $15 per GB.

It's also only another $10 for each additional 2 GB you want to add onto the plan, so it ends up not being that awful on a family plan.

ASA syntax is even better because you can run enable-level commands from anywhere! Configuring an ACL or interface? Boom, "sh int ip brief" that junk. I will admit that the reverse "int ip"/"ip int" thing is kind of dumb.

It really depends on where you live. My local cable ISP provides great speed and unlimited bandwidth. The ISP that provided just down the street (literally) was bought out by Shaw and then Rogers, and went from fantastic to crap in about 6 months.

It's not an "arbitrary change". It's a platform/company Cisco purchased in the mid 90s, and have slowly upgraded and brought into line with IOS command syntax along the way. It was created as it's own product with nothing to do with Cisco or IOS by people who as far as I know never even worked for Cisco.

I get that it's odd to use now because it smells a bit like IOS but doesn't quite work like IOS......but if you know where it came from you should be surprised it works like IOS at all, especially if you were deploying those things in the 90s.

Picked up a new client this past month. They are running their website in-house, on an Ubuntu VM running in VirtualBox on a Server 2003 box, on a fiber connection that is often slower than a T1. To make it even more awesome the VM randomly slows down to a crawl multiple times per week, bringing the host machine with it. Kill the VM and restart it and it's happy for a few days.

Did I mention they have no backups in place?

Now to get them to approve moving that to a real web host.

I love the cold and snow, but I usually turn into a huge wuss when it gets over 80F and 60%+ humidity here in the summer so I'm probably one of those people.
