The aesthetic was great too, I loved echovald and the jade sea which may or may not have stemmed from hundreds of hours of alliance battle.

By beastmaster do you mean the trait(s) for Beastmastery? Because I'm pretty sure those are all crap / not appealing. I use S/WH and Longbow for PVE with Berserker stuff and (I think) 20-25-0-25 traits. Jaguar / Jungle Stalker / Red Moa for pets. I do a lot of dungeons and this puts out quite high DPS with adequate utility (spirit / spring / WH 5 / Pet skill(s)).

edit: I should note I don't bother to change anything when I do open world PvE or anything and the build is flexible enough to handle anything. Some people don't like mainhand sword autoattack because it roots you but once you get used to dodging with 2 / 3 I rarely have to evade (which means more +10% dmg time).

`~`~`~-=MESMER TALK=-`~`~`

After returning from the game from a brief hiatus, I run into the problem I usually do: something that I like has been nerfed and I have to build around it for WvW. I've settled on something like this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQRAsa8flwzipXUTsGb9IhpHE33AnkCV/6SK4duB with full zerk armor and runes of air for bonus mobility and roaming.

Going full phantasm damage, since a few patches ago, is no longer viable. So this is my new EXTREME STEALTH build that I like because it can get people so twisted around that they can't hit me, even though I am full glass cannon.

What I like about this build:
It's especially good against: Thieves, Elementalists, Glass Warriors, Necromancers, Engineers
It can keep multiple people distracted and hunting you
Good for solo/small group roaming and dueling single players
It's very survivable, despite appearing full glass
I can escape zergs like nothing
It can burst down/duel other glass cannons with near perfect success rates
It's basically a phantasm damage build
It's fun
It made Torch 4 my favorite skill in the game

What I don't like about this build:
It's not very good against: Guardians, Bunker Warriors, Heavy field condition damage anything
Torch 5 seems like a wasted skill and a huge sacrifice in total damage
I miss using greatsword berserkers for snares, but duelists are necessary for their far superior damage
Phantasm damage builds are not as good as they used to be
Sometimes I think this build might be better slightly tweaked for condition damage, utilizing the bleed procs from duelist crits and burn from torch 4 (but I have no idea if this would actually be viable)
It's overall worse in damage when compared to most glassy Mesmer builds

So I'd be psyched to hear your comments and critiques on this build. I'd also like to see any of your mesmer builds that you use for roaming WvW. Something I rarely do is shatter (besides F4 when stomping and F3 to interrupt heals) so I'd be especially interested in seeing some weird shatter builds if you have them. But even more especially interested in seeing 100% uptime phantasm damage builds, because those are my old love.

Beastmaster is a inherently defensive build. If you go 0/10/30/0/30 You'll get close to the 3k armor+power figure that seems to be all the rage with regen on top. Natural healing gives you passive regen as well which is primarily why beastmaster was considered overpowered when they got Zephyr's Speed as a minor trait. Better days :(
This build will survive in the thick of zerg combat, it's not designed to be ranged. Option for short/long bow is always there if you're uncomfortable without ranged. The drake has cleave on it's autoattack so it has uses in PvE, where pets are insanely resilient.

Less damage but more boon uptime focuses on using nature magic is 0/0/30/30/10.
This is more for WvW giving allies buffs to keep up but there's nothing stopping you from doing general exploration or dungeons in it since you're not going to die quickly either way.
You'll be able to give perma fury, regen and swiftness to anyone around you and keep call of the wild up almost all the time. You can take the 10 in beastmastery and put it back into skirmishing for Companion's Might or Pet's Prowess if you don't want the red moa.

For perma regen and swiftness you'll need to spam Guard to activate Nature's Voice. Having recall pet bound to a convenient button will help but you can do stealth fears and also immobilize if you want to switch out the red moa for a drakehound.

Not entirely true. Before this season crap started, servers would have actual rankings like before the randomization, but everyone's rating was shuffled basically +/- 200 points only for purposes of seeding and then everyone's randomized rating was sorted. Generally speaking yes, colors were randomized, but since it was the ratings that were being randomized, you had a better chance of being one color over another, due to how all the different ways the random roll could fall for every server. As you can see here this showed up most prominently on the very top and very bottom servers, but still had an effect in the middle, especially when there was a large gap in ranking between servers (as there was between the 12-13 NA servers over most of the summer).

Lots of protection, the pull on off hand axe has a short cd and your pets have longer conditions. Pet choice is based mainly on their F2 and as much as I've tried replacing the Wolf just isn't happening, the fear is great for stomping someone being ressed. The other pet you have some choice with, spider for the immobilize, owl for the damage and chill etc.

Weapon on swap is whatever preference you have, although I'd take a greatsword as well if you do any zerg stuff.

So, near the beginning of the year, I quit this game due to the personal story being infuriatingly poorly done the further I got, and zones seeming like a complete slog with the most basic enemies taking minutes to kill, God help me if a Deer joined the battle against my Engineer, who seemed to get weaker and weaker the more cool gadgets I gave her.

Now, months later, the MMO itch is coming back. I'm jumping between MMO's that I enjoyed in the past, with the only ones really sticking out as legitimately good are WoW and this game. And this game is the cheaper one to go to, by far. So since there's nothing to lose, I might want to come back, but I'm not sure if I want to start a new character or not. I remember loving the exploration, the smoothness of combat, the crafting system, the writing outside of the personal story, and so many little things, but I don't want to get caught in the "everything kills me in 2 hits and takes fifty or more shots to kill" camp again. Was I doing something wrong, or were / are Engineers really that useless?

Anyway, the new thread seemed like a good place to start. If I come back, is there anything I should do to avoid it becoming a slog again? And would it be a good idea to start from the beginning again?

Engineers start off slower than some of the other classes. In addition, you may have been doing some stuff "wrong" like not updating your gear after 5 or 10 levels (some classes have more leeway, but not as much on Engineers), not understanding your skills, power vs condition damage mechanics, not adding traits in multiples of 5, etc etc etc.

Honestly, i'd suggest rolling a Warrior, Guardian, Ranger, or Necromancer and getting them to level 20 or 30 first as you have more leeway for mistakes on those classes while you're still learning. Engineers and Elementalists are probably the two classes with the highest learning curve so don't feel too bad if stuff doesn't work out at first. You can also join SFD or Goon Squad so that you'll have some folks to talk to and ask questions!

I've leveled both a Mesmer and eng and thought that the Mesmer was harder. It could have been that the engineer was my 2nd character, so I knew what I was doing, but it's also that mesmers are really dependent on their traits and don't really start to shine until 60 onward. I wouldn't say that mesmers are hard to learn, you just have to put more effort into it, just like engineers, compared to everything else. That being said mesmers are incredibly fun and the best caster class in any mmo I've played. I can see how engineers are fun for people too, but it just doesn't do it for me like the mesmer does.

If you really want a low effort "I don't give a gently caress" class go for a guardian not a warrior. You can alt-tab most bosses in the game with a full zerker + AH build no dodging required, any difficult boss and you can just put up a reflect wall for the most part.

As mentioned, engineer has a pretty steep learning curve confirmed with some sheer cliffs :v: Part of the issue is that you have anywhere from one to four different skill bars, plus your toolbelt, available at any given moment and you have to process in your head which of the skills on those bars is most needed at that instant. The video of the WvW engineer explaining his choices someone posted a couple pages back is a very good example of how you play engineer effectively.

That said, it's most important that you find a class you like. Each of the eight classes plays very differently so make sure you mess around a bit and see which you enjoy the feel of.

If you do end up still wanting to play an engineer, ask for help in Goon Squad chat. We have some fairly experienced engineers who can help you.

"As a rule, I never touch anything more sophisticated and delicate than myself."
Just to add to what Kes said, Engineers require a strong understanding of how combo fields and finishers work to really got the most out of the class as they have access to every finisher (edit: except for whirl) and every field aside from dark and ethereal (and the Elementalist-exclusive lightning).

Furthermore you will have to mentally keep track of several unseen cooldowns (such as when you swap kits as well as many traits).

It's a tough class to start with, but it will give you a crash course in a wide variety of important game mechanics.

As it was mentioned phantasm builds are totally viable. I use a variety of builds when in WvW; if I want to do small scale fights then I typically run a phantasm build using sword/sword and scepter/pistol for additional defense skills since the riposte/block skills are surprisingly powerful.

I didn't bother setting the gear set; but I never, ever, ever run full glass on anything. I like mixing in cav/knight with my zerker to have 1500 base toughness. I use the same gear for every build listed below coupled with travelers runes.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQRAsc7alwzKqHTTkGbdJhpC9+MjoLdUFwOpCqu8BeD

If I'm running in a zerg I typically run a glam shatter build.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQJARWlwzqqHWTqGb9IxJFMv5oeodrXdSKaNqB

I will also sometimes run the standard 20/20/0/0/30 shatter build; but that's a rarity for me these days. I also will run the 20/20/0/20/10 reflect build or 0/20/0/20/30 reflect shatter build on occasion as well. My overall favorite is the phantasm for small scale fights as I'm not really a fan of zerging, much more satisfying traveling with a small group and taking on other small groups imo.

Regardless though; do what you feel is fun, there is absolutely no wrong build and even builds that have been around forever can still be fun if it's what you like to do even if they aren't the FOTM build.
