I believe Gamespot's new policy is to review games more than once, at different times during their patch/DLC path, and by different people. Maybe just to gently caress with Metacritic and keep people from just going there for reviews, I dunno.

I don't think it's policy, I think they're just allowing it now. The Bioshock re-review only came to pass because that guy really wanted to do it.

Thing is, part of what they seem to want iterated is the combat. Which is by far the franchises biggest strong point, a really interesting and fluid combat system that most any other game would kill to match.

I think the majority of us fans would be pretty pissed if they changed the base combat much. So if they can't change the combat, what CAN they change that would change the game enough to feel fresh?

Now be a dear and
fuck the fuck off.
Early impressions:

- It 'feels' weird compared to the Rocksteady titles. Not better, not worse, just the weights in the engine feel weird.
- Multiplayer is fun when you're playing it, but I can't imagine it surviving long or building a community. It's typical Splash Damage fare, but the total lack of communication on the PC platform smells like low effort.
- I managed to encounter a bug in my very first fight in Single Player. I got the 'slow-mo' final hit on the second to last guy, at which point the last guy just paced around me like he could hit me, but I couldn't hit him and he couldn't hit me, either.

Summary so far for me has been slightly negative; They've still got a rock solid concept and core game mechanics, but it just doesn't feel like it has the same level of care and polish the two Rocksteady titles did. I'm not damning it quite yet, I want to give it more time, but I'm a little skeptical at present.

People often say reviews should be one thing or another - "reviews should be objective with no opinions!", "reviews should be entertaining!", "reviews should be informative!" - I think there's room for just about all of them. Leave it to the most qualified in each field.
Basically this is the problem with gamespot and has been for a long time. Gamespot's reviews stick to the old generalized one size fits all style of reviews that used to go in magazines and stuff but the problem is this style of reviews just don't work well when you try to make it personality driven as well. It's like if someone really loves Pokemon they can't write an unbiased review of a new Pokemon game. Not to say that all reviews have to be unbiased but you just can't have your cake and eat it in this situation. That's why I find their work to be just flat out pointless because it fills none of those review positions in any meaningful way.

I can find better unbiased reviews from other websites and their "personalities" aren't apparent in any work that they do making me not care about their personal opinions in any way.

I also didn't think the open world changed very much beyond more distance between meaningful things. And using gadgets in combat, but there wasn't ever much reason to do that, your bat-fists were enough for almost all the fights. I guess that's been fixed here though?

edit: I guess what it comes down to is that for me, the "meaningful things" about the Arkham games are the Metroidvania areas that are mostly indoors. The whole rest of the game hardly means anything to me.

The world being bigger and more open was a huge difference. It also affected the way you got around with the new gliding mechanics, and it completely changed how sidequests were encountered. Your entire experience between going through the core storyline events was completely different in the two games. They also added a lot of new gadgets to the mix, and a lot of new enemy types that required different ways to defeat them. It felt like Rocksteady wasn't content just resting on their laurels and releasing the same game with a new coat of paint as a sequel, and actually set out to alter pretty significant parts of the formula.

MEH. City felt like a rehash to me. I enjoyed it for what it was when I played through it, but I never felt the urge to play through it again like I still do with Asylum from time to time. Origins feels like it's gonna be the same as City for me. I'm enjoying what I've played so far, but it's probably not gonna be the kind of game that has such a hold on me that I want to revisit it in the future.

Bugs I've had:

- Being trapped in a room because the doors wouldn't open (had to quit to menu and go back in to resolve.)
- Main quest waypoint being lost after doing a side quest. Finally found where to go and is working fine now, but was very frustrating at the time.
- Just now, I pulled a grate open with the batclaw and used grapple to get up to it, but Batman won't climb into it (even though it's obvious it's exactly where I'm supposed to go as there were similar situations in both previous games.

Apart from the bugs, there's a really good game here. I just wish I didn't keep having fun interrupted by bug frustration.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. The move to a larger, more open world in City was enough for me to feel like that purchase was worthwhile. It's a shame there's nothing in what I've read about Origins that makes me feel like spending the same amount of money again.

If you already own the game and are enjoying it, the only reason you should care about reading reviews is for the sake of seeing what others thought about it.

Not to be rude, but honestly the only reason why people seem to care so much about review scores is because they need self-gratification for spending $60 on something. It's how you end up with that picture posted earlier of people having a temper tantrum over Jeff Gerstmann's Twilight Princess review, or the flood of angry comments on any review that gave GTA V anything lower than a perfect score.

I've got a pretty easy metric for if someone on the fence will probably enjoy Arkham Origins. Do you want more of the same we've seen in Arkham City, with the only real additions being a significantly larger map, a new and decent storyline, and a few new gadgets? That's literally it.

If yes: It's probably worth the $50 to you. I'm really enjoying it myself. It's really fun and one of the boss fights I've been in so far was pretty good.

If no: You should skip it. There is a decent amount of content but again you've already played this game before back in 2011.
