Wow, all it needs is the huge decals down the side of the car advertising that the car either has a Turbo or TwinCam 16, and you'd have peak 80s Japanese car right there.

Eh, it maybe, barely squeaks by with a clean title. (Or it was uninsured?) But you'd need to have a look underneath first, see if the chassis where it connects to the suspension is hosed or not. I'm guessing it jumped a curb.

Hood, fender, bumper, and probably at least one headlight, can that be done for 5 grand?

That car is actually pretty screwed. If you look at the ad, the shot of the engine isn't quite where it should be, and most of that front end parts are just not available. You'd be sinking as much into those parts as you would the whole car.

I've only seen "rat rods" that were cars from the early-pre 60's. Even then, they're rust patina buckets and more often than not that have been clear coated to keep the look without patina'ing further.

Put a Rover V8 in it and absolutely piss off the Cosworth aficionados. Then point out that at least it's an ALUMINUM V8.
Nah, the Cosworth Vega was a good-locking little car. It's only major failing (over anything else of the era, at least) was a lack of forethought on the engine, partially due to bean counting. I mean, really: a cast-iron head on an aluminum block, with no cylinder liners, and marginal cooling system? Fuel-injected, though!

I like how guys have to pull off the valve cover (or in some cases the cylinder head) on an engine and then go "Oh poo poo, this is hard" and then try to dump the whole car (that was previously running) as a parts bin project.

Yep, that's the traditional version. Seems like every person out there with a rusting heap in their front yard has found the word from some TV show and has decided that is how they can finally sell it, now that they think there's a market.

The Capri is weird since it's just a really ugly attempt at a bad car.

eddyc49

After owning a 2003 9-3, the first thing that jumped out to me was the lost only key. That's a $1000-1500 problem by itself if you can even find the parts any more. That plus the other issues people have mentioned make it a car that is essentially worthless as anything more than parts.

What is he looking for? Is it really in good enough shape to warrant a restore and care, or is it a hidden basket case that he didn't identify until he started taking it apart?

A Vega was my Dad's first car and I would love to restore one, but my funds and garage are probably soon being filled by a Lemons project unless he'll let this thing go for cheap.
