Somehow I have doubt's that Clarkson's experience with a stock GT has any relevance here.

It probably has an expanded-capacity fuel cell.

No way that thing had a roll cage or any additional safety equipment.

He lifted off the throttle and then overcorrected in a tall vehicle with fairly grippy tires. In a car he probably still would have hooked back and gone straight into the wall.

It was made for going fast on loose surfaces where you overpower the grip and countersteer constantly. It's completely unsuited to a high-grip environment, as you said it'll just understeer everywhere.

These must take an unreal amount of planning to layout and figure out just which layer is going on in which order. Also the shop's bill for masking tape must be truly next level.

Amazing.

Yeah a paint job like that is about 3-4 times thicker than regular ones, they do a lot of thin layers instead of just 3 thick coats of primer, base and clear. I've been looking at a shitload of videos and I really want to start painting cars but I'm so low on cash right now, I don't even have a car myself right now (that'll be rectified when I get paid later this month, but still).

If you've already got the painting hardware, hit up some local scrapyards/Pick-N-Pulls/junkyards. Grab some fenders, hoods, trunks, fridge doors, whatever. I hear a lot of the older guys would stock up on Beetle fenders and practice masking and designs and whatnot.

Well I live in an apartment so I don't have anywhere to paint and no I don't have any hardware so I'd have to get all that too. Thinking about getting some cheap airbrush gear to practice small scale though.

Also yeah, when I do get some hardware I'll go down to some junkyard and buy some practice parts.

If you're interested in painting, but have no car or tools, or even space to practice, check up on freehand pinstriping. Learning how to paint, especially learning custom techniques like those lowrider videos, is not cheap. It's not hard, but like anything else artistic it requires tons of practice to get right, and custom metalflakes and candies are the most expensive paints that exist. They are also the hardest paints to spray properly. I'd first suggest getting a quality airbrush and learning how to use those first. You'll use less material and you'll get the basic things down like surface prep, proper paint mixture, and so on. Custom painting is one of the most gratifying things you can do when you're working on a car. Only firing a freshly built and installed engine for the first time has a more tangible effect in such a short time as rolling a prepped and primed car in and a custom painted car out. Unmasking cars like those lowriders is as close to the innocent joy a child experiences on Christmas that a gearhead adult can get :unsmith:

In regards to pinstriping, here's part 1 of a Q&A/how-to with the most famous pinstripers of all, Von Dutch and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. I've posted this before, but it's worth a second time.

The real crazy thing is almost all of the material in paint jobs like those lowriders is clear coat. Lay a base down, then clearcoat. Wetsand it, lay down the stripes. clearcoat again, maybe some airbrushing. Clearcoat again, wetsand again. Then candies and/or pearls, then clearcoat again. Sand one more time, seal coat of clear. Wetsand one last time, polish.

e- Oh, btw, don't Google Von Dutch, his personal life is disturbing and sad, it's better to just watch him in his element and keep his artwork separate from the man himself. He had a reputation of being a racist and having anger issues, but in reality he was most likely mentally ill.
