The tears of time
Started reading this on Crunchryoll. I'm about thirty chapters in now. This definitely seems like the best series on that service for now.

It reminds me a lot of Detroit Metal City and The Daily Lives of High School Boys. I love it when they lampoon old anime series. There was a sight gag in one of the earlier chapters where the main character turned into Kaiji for a panel during a tense moment.

The romance plot does kind of suck. It's not as bad as it was in Bakuman, but Wagatsumi still has that problem where they don't give her anything funny to do, and the only reason the main character seems to be obsessed with her is she's pretty.

I like a lot of stuff in this series, really, but certain things like Matrix 2 being a literal pedophile in the open that is played for laughs and isn't immediately just curbstomped makes me want to stop reading every time I see him. The rest of the crew are creepy and losers, but him in particular is a whole different ballgame. Especially in chapter 47, gently caress.

I thought Matrix recognized he was creepy and decided to restrain himself after the DX brigade broke up?

It was pretty refreshing seeing most of the "hopeless losers" decide to buckle down and try and become better people, did they go back on that? :smith:

Yeah. Fair enough, teenage boys are teenage boys, which accounts for most of the DX brigade, but it does irritate me that they tolerate a known paedo in their midst.

Yes, it was literally a "oh, is that so? *DX BRIGADE REFORMED!!!*" panel.

Isn't Komatsu actually the missnomer here? From what I've understood the guy actually lifts weights? Or is he *just* a ...wrestling fan or something?

And yeah, that pedoshit, what the christ.

The really deviant behavior and the sex crimes stuff has been getting worse and worse, and I can no longer tell if its still supposed to be tongue in cheek. The DX brigade went from "Hates popular guys, are otaku losers" to 'sexually harass Sylvia hardcore, trying to break into rooms to steal underware/get explicit photos, expect to gangbang their friends sister when she shows up, creepy little sister stuff, and openly accept a pedophile like its no big deal."

It seems like we're building up to a Wolfen Guy moment, where something so completely over the line occurs it ruins the series forever.

Like mentioned earlier the tone of the humor is pretty similar to Detroit Metal City where it's just extreme gags played for laughs because they're just dumb awkward high school students trying to grow up. I remember even the pedophile jokes are called out by the rest of the DX Gang as highly inapproppriate. At least in the latest chapter they're going for some character development for Matrix 2.

Latest chapter: Wreeeeestling!

Woah! Way to go Aoshima! A positive confession in chapter 62 might actually make him the most proactive and successful Harem manga protagonist of all time!

Not even close to caught up yet but I wanted to write a couple of comments:

It looks like the first 8 something chapters I read were actually from a special rather than actual manga chapters? It's strange though because those felt like a much better introduction to.. everything.

Second, and main one - did anyone else come across a "and so I gave up - THE END, THANK YOU FOR READING" page? Was that some kind of troll, or.. what happened there?

The first couple chapters were actually in another magazine, but are still considered to have happened. Obviously with the switch to a another magazine, the author had to reintroduce everything for the new readers.

I'm glad they're moving the story forward. That wrestling arc just wasn't doing anything for me. Hopefully Itou and the DX corps will go full-on inquisition on Aoshima next chapter. Itou's mustachioed political persona cracks me up every time.

Gotta admit one thing for Wagatsuma, it's probably one of the few shonen that bother to have the couple actually dating in what feels like the first half of the story. Though I'm sure Aoshima will screw this up in some manner, or I'm wrong and we're actually nearing the end. It doesn't feel anywhere close to the end though, since Wagatsuma has barely had any character development.

I'm at chapter 21 right now; the literal pedophile in the group is pretty weird, but some of the sight gags are incredible. The visual callbacks to Kaiji slay me, and having gone through the entire series so far thinking "Man, this dude looks incredibly similar to that guy from Beck", having his friends categorically refuse to let him play guitar in a band was hilarious.

So I just read this up to date and holy poo poo, when Aoshima finally started dating with Wagatsuma was the best.

Argh, I "caught up," (Chapter 69) except not because there's actually like 10 more chapters that just haven't been translated outside of Crunchyroll.

That's not fair. There's supposed to be a safety zone. You catch up and then you're safe from spoilers. I caught up. Why am I not safe. :gonk:

Oh and on the name written in Chapter 61:

Is that autograph really signed "Watanabe"(わたなべ)? It looks more like Yutatabe(ゆたたべ) to me.. but then that has 10 hits on Google so it's probably not that. Even if it's just a Different style of handwriting the middle two REALLY look alike. Is it just one of those cases where context fills in all the blanks for you or is there seriously a nuanced difference that I can't see?

Well, it's just solidifying itself more and more as a harem manga it seems, though I never thought a teacher heroine would enter the picture. Now that it's come up though, it just made me realize that our main character is practically one of those terrible visual novel protagonists, only he hits all the flags terribly and doesn't know how to reach the ending despite seeing it literally, and all of his friends are terrible instead of being bros. Basically he is no Keima Katsuragi and clearly should play more games.

This is kind of infuriating actually, the author is being a coktease by showing all these possible (and interesting) outcomes just to keep Aoushima obsessed with the most boring and shallow heroine. rear end in a top hat.

Speaking as someone who just finished marathoning the manga over the last week or so, yeah, the change is noticeable. I almost have to think his editor insisted on a new direction or something, with the way the DX Corps went from being Aoishima's gooney support group to just this nameless bunch of assholes who show up for like less then two pages a chapter to piss on him and disappear again.

This teacher storyline is the absolute low point though. So fricken terrible. I can almost sorta see the author trying to do some sort of rebound arc for Aoshima in this mess and eventually he'll make up with everyone and things will be fun again but ehhhhh probably just gonna stay awful from here on out.

Its the sharpest quality/subject matter change I've seen since Wolfen Guy.

Seriously, a clumsy hot older teacher interested in a 16 year old high schooler and who is so clumsy she ties herself up in traditional Japanese bondage style. It's complete trash.

The most grating thing to me is how apparently literally their entire lives depend on this year/session of school. Generic boring girl dumps him, time skip to where he's spent 10 years obsessing over her, and is a fat shut in NEET who blew his sister's college fund on some investment scheme. This somehow completely ignores the fact that there were at least 2 other futures with women he married.

Guy from the weirdos club becomes obsessed with the teacher, professes his love to her, gets rejected and decides to abandon his family and live as a monk.

When it started the hyperbolic reactions were funny at first because they'd get knocked down to reality pretty quick, but now its infecting every aspect of the series. For me the turning point from entertaining to poo poo was when the DX brigade convinced the guy with the hot sister to steal her underwear, then when she showed up to meet them in the park they thought she came to have sex with them and starting planning how all of them would bang her.

Between the increasingly creepy sexual harassment by the glasses guy, the literal pedophile, and the leader wanting to destroy the main character's happiness for daring to be with a girl its just turned into a complete pile of poo poo.

That's just the kind of guy he is I guess... the king of settling into a groove and being comfortable with the way things are going. It makes sense, knowing him.

This chapter wasn't good, but luckily I read everyone's reactions first and lowered my expectations to the very bottom so it didn't kill me. It was okay, some good jokes.

They still haven't condoned any of the DX brigade's creepiness - it's still wrong, and the characters are changing very slowly. I'm just annoyed by this recent shut-in arc because it's focusing on all the uninteresting aspects.
