Saw this a couple days ago. This is a great example of 'What not to do' when offroading. I know I'll miss a few but here's a short list of mistakes.

Not airing down to bare minimum
Linking snatch straps = Good way to kill someone
Too fast a jump for the snatch.
Not digging out behind the stuck truck and using those sand ladders causing it to dig deeper.
Not anchoring the winch truck.
Should use a winch with a pulley to double pull power in that thick poo poo.
And the obvious biggie, Always pull in a straight loving line.

It's obvious a camera truck got across as there's tire tracks in the mud to the left of the truck that gets stuck. I'd like to see how they rescued the stuck truck before the water got to it. I'm betting it involves the afore mentioned camera trucks.

What has 850HP, nearly 3,000 lb/ft torque, weighs ~2,200 lbs, hits 100mph in 5 seconds, has Chris Harris driving it and yet is kinda boring to watch?

I didn't realize how important engine and exhaust noise was to the whole experience. The thing hauls rear end and is extremely impressive in every technical way but I would rather watch him drive a Miata.

I have had a terrible desire to own a turbocharged SRT8 Jeep for about a year now. Unfortunately, resale values are quite high.

My best guess would be the connection between the straps being a weak spot where they're likely to come apart, but now rather than just a strap snapping back you have the hardware that would usually be at the ends also being in the middle, thus you now have a projectile with some force.

Same reason you see people winch with the hood up, if the cable snaps and whips back it can gently caress stuff up. A strap on its own has a lot of drag and would likely just hurt as long as you're not right there where it snaps, but a flying hook can cause some damage.

What's that, an old tractor that has a glowplug and starts with a loving shotgun shell?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJpZfp0Ss2U

gently caress yes it is.

E: also just a snatch strap that snaps will quite easily pierce a windshield or break an arm. You don't want to be anywhere near poo poo like that, a friend of mine had a muddy strap snap and just the torn end went straight through the fiberglass hatch of her cherokee.

Getting metal d-rings involved just makes it worse, they'll smash holes right through metal body panels.

wolrah covered it pretty much. The straps are meant to stretch to some extent. A d-ring in the middle of two straps means if one strap snaps or a d-ring at either end breaks you've now got one hell of a projectile coming at you at great speed. Just the strap by itself has enough force to break out back windows, let alone with a 2lb hunk of steel attached to it.

It's like watching a film with the volume on mute. Sound is more than half of the film, if you watch sad things without the string soundtrack they tend to be far less effective. The human brain is weird like that.

Sure the car ha a roll cage and so-on, but it is a real jump. My father has a 70's car magazine somewhere that had an article on the stunt crew that did it. They made the same jump in front of an audience several times in the US. The article discussed the how the precise shape of the ramps was determined etc.
