I think this is great, but I love Nachtmystium. It sounds like next year's full-length is going to be great and I'm interested to see what Blake does afterward if it ends up being the last Nachtmystium record. Maybe that Shining album with Thurston Moore will finally happen.

Ing-vey. Same as Yngwie.

Speaking of Yngwie, this is one of my favorite songs off of his more recent albums. His earlier stuff gets plenty of credit and his guitar wankery is legendary, but this is a solid metal song with some guitar flair.

So earlier this month I went to Bergen, Norway. Since I was there already, I contacted God Seed's management to see if I could meet and interview Gaahl.
Even though Gaahl was going to travel the next morning to play in the UK, he was cool enough to meet with me that night at a bar. You can read our pretty drat long exchange here: http://www.metalblast.net/2013/11/unleashing-satan-an-evening-with-gaahl/

Gaahl was extremely nice; after the interview he invited me to join him, his boyfriend and his boyfriend's sister for drinks and we just shot the poo poo for a few hours. A truly surreal experience.

I hope you guys like it!

Behemoth released a video from their forthcoming album, due in February I believe. I wasn't that into their last couple of albums, but I liked this tune-- it's a bit slow at first but it builds and develops really nicely. And the video, well, poo poo gets real at about 2:45.

Nachtmystium is awesome, but it's always a turn off when musicians who produce material you like end up being lovely people, which is what all the anecdotes and evidence seem to point to with Blake. (Though I don't know him personally) I'm still bummed I missed out on seeing them at Apocalypse Fest (Colorado BM festival) the summer before this one. They were supposed to headline, but they cancelled at the last minute. They are legendarily flaky with touring, so seeing their name advertised is like, a 25% chance they will actually play. Still got to see Nightbringer though, so you know, a couple of Trve Kvlt scratches of accomplishment in my satanic black leather girdle and all that.

I didn't even realise Nightbringer played live. drat. The new Cult of Fire is pretty good but hasn't really blown me away yet. The Cosmic Church album on the other hand... https://soundcloud.com/kuunpalvelus/cosmic-church-ennen

Also of note: Caïna is playing black metal again and his new tape is pretty cool. I liked Litanies of Abjection as a curiosity, but black metal is definitely his strong suit. (I thought his improvised ambient live show was god awful, personally). http://churchoffuck.bandcamp.com/album/ca-na-earth-inferno Whilst we're talking UKBM, Barshasketh are worth a look. They were really impressive live, admittedly I never got round to paying much attention to their recorded material though. http://barshasketh.bandcamp.com/

The black metal AOTY for me is still Fyrnask- Eldir Nott (ignoring stuff that isn't quite black metal like Altar of Plagues/various black/death albums).

Finally: Any London goons going to MGLA/Svartidaudi/Grave Miasma/One Tail, One Head? That's an unmissable bill for me. Never seen an underground BM bill quite like it in the UK, although it does mean that I probably won't bother to travel up to Scotland for the Mare/OTOH/Sortelegia show.

Nightbringer doesn't really tour, but they are from Colorado, so they play shows from time to time.

As usual, Destroyer 666's "Defiance" is ruling my world as far as black metal goes, any other fans here? Best black/thrash record ever made. Shame that all the other bands calling themselves "black-thrash" can't hang with that album.

Yeah I love D666, but I think Cold Steel... or Phoenix Rising is the best album because they're the most consistent IMO. That said, Weapons of Conquest and Blood for Blood are two of my favourite D666 tracks. Did you check out the Nocturnal Graves album? They have Shrapnel on lead guitar so you might dig it. Not too far from D666's sound really, and might tide you over til they put out some new material. Gospel of the Horns and Ketzer are also very much worth checking out if you heaven't already. There's plenty of good black thrash around imo.

In terms of demo tapes, Recluse's demo tape from this year is loving grim. I love it. It's the guy from Cobalt, just playing straight up black metal that sounds like LLN. (It sounds more like Darkthrone to me, but other people seem to favour LLN as the comparison point. Totally raw and full of hate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EKAcFl3guQ Arnaut Pavle's demo is also very worth checking out. They sound like a more punky Darkthrone/Craft. Apparently the demo came out a while back but Fallen Empire is reissuing it so that's how I heard about it. http://bandcamp.fallenempirerecords.com/album/arnaut-pavle Finally, the 13th Moon demo is well worth your time if you like black/death. It's being reissued on vinyl soon by Mordgrimm, so people without tape players will finally be able to hear the whole thing. I'm quite looking forward to it. Exitium Prod in the UK is always putting out interesting tape releases if you like that sort of thing. Every time I look at his site I get a little more tempted to grab a cassette player for myself.

Will check all that out. Thanks for the heads up man! I dig D666's old stuff too, but "Defiance" is more of an even mixture of Black and Thrash, whereas the older stuff is more BM. Terror Abraxas is my other favorite.

I like a lot of other black/thrash but I feel like it's not on the same level as Defiance, I rock stuff like Sargeist and Impaled Nazarene (particularly Pro Patria Finlandia) quite often though. The main thing I like is more complex thrash riffs, a lot of black/thrash goes for more crossover simplicity in the thrash influenced parts.

Raise Hell (even though the band name is pretty horrible) is pretty excellent black/thrash. Probably only slightly blackened (mainly vocals, not a ton of trem picking) compared to a lot of other albums in that subgenre, but Holy Target is a loving solid record.
