Yes, I am very cereal.
After one listen through so far, I'm definitely feeling this album. Tracks from NLDW seldom get played by me anymore, while I still listen to anything off The Money Store regularly. Looking forward to getting to know this album pretty well.

Birds really makes a lot more sense as a mid-album respite than as a single. Plus I think it's really great lyrically. First track is incredible as well, it's a really solid album after a couple of listens.

This album is pretty impressive. I remember reading somewhere that they were working on music that was going to soundtrack a film, is this it, or is that another project?

Really enjoying this album, especially Big House and Government Plates back-to-back. I have always and still like birds too. :colbert:

Definitely like it a lot more than NLDW.

I'm Abed, and I never watch TV.

The album comes tagged as "Rock & Roll" instead of "Hip-Hop/Rap" but that is such a Hip-Hop/Rap move.

I'm really digging it. I didn't know what to think of birds the first time I heard it but now I can't stop listening to it.

Give Birds some time. First time I listened to it I was really not into it, but I am starting to think it is my favorite song of the new album. Regardless, this album is dope.

I liked No Love Deep Web, but not nearly as much as Money Store and Ex Military, but I am glad they are back on their A game with this album.

Old Town Road to EGOT

Alright, so now that I've had a few chances to listen to this in my car while speeding down the interstate with the windows down, I can say for certain that this is my favorite thing they've ever done. Seriously, going like 85 miles per hour with the cold wind whipping across my face while listening to this with the volume cranked way up just feels right. It's some of the best "get the gently caress to your destination as fast as humanly possible" music, up there with The Prodigy, 65daysofstatic, Venetian Snares and more.

It's probably one of my favorite albums of the year after only a few days of listening to it.

I don't think this album is as good as the other Death Grips albums. The songs don't really go anywhere, the vocals are almost absent, and it almost feels like an album full of unfinished songs.

I like what they did with the No Love Deep Web cover, but for practical purposes I did not enjoy having a big penis on my phone screen when listening to that album at work.

Okay, but you have to admit their choice to have a erect penis as an cover is pretty artistic.

Well, I mean....I certainly could say that they did better in some areas with Government Plates than Exmilitary. The bass drops on Anne Bonny were amazing. But the whole album becomes so much more surreal than their previous stuff, it makes is less accessible during a first listen.

I disagree with the consensus in this thread and think NLDW is their best record and comfortably so. It isn't as accessible as TMS but it's melodic while also being challenging and multilayered that rewards repeat listenings. It is probably the apex of the sound they've been going for since Exmilitary and I don't think we will hear anything like it again if Government Plates is emblematic of where they're taking the music.

No Love is also the song I play for the uninitiated but I might have more success with I Seen Footgage and talk about how it is satan's remix of Push It.

I also had a close call listening to NLDW at work when our new 21-year old clerk came into my office with the iPhone and Dock going.

I wholeheartedly agree. While I think TMS and Exmilitary are the ones that people are gonna remember down the road, NLDW is, to me, nearly flawless (I don't care for "Deep Web" that much). Sort of like Tusk as compared to Rumors, if we really want to compare the Grips to Fleetwood Mac.

As for Government Plates - I loved it, but I would have loved it even more if it could have kept up the absolutely killer Pillbox Hat-Anne Bonny-Two Heavens streak for a little longer. As it stands, it becomes almost more of a dance record after those three tracks - there are long stretches with very little vocal work from Ride, which people have already pointed out. Simultaneously their grooviest and weirdest work to date. Time will tell where it fits into the ranking of DG albums.

I spent a lot of time with this album before coming to a final conclusion, and I'll say that I don't like it better than the Money Store as a front-to-back record. However, it DOES get me excited as hell to see them live again. We have a small, dedicated hip-hop venue in Vancouver with a fantastic sound-system and atmosphere. It really fits their sound.
