But that being said, someplace running 9-5 PST with EST customers is silly, we at least cover longer times.
A remote answering service that can escalate (paid, per-incident) severity 1 issues to an engineer on call isn't unheard of, either. Software companies don't understand that people need to run this poo poo in production.

Well, I wouldn't expect someone to be there 24/7. Long enough to cover the majority of your customers perhaps. 8am-8pm should cover 8-5 both east and west coast. After that, I'd say an on-call tech would suffice, but we shouldn't have to pay out the rear end in order to get after hours support (depending on the service contract, of course).

quote:

Winamp shutting down after over 15 years

The famous media player Winamp will shut down next month, over 15 years after its initial release. Though Winamp eventually lost popularity, in the late '90s and early 2000s it was one of the go-to media players for listening to local music or radio streams. In 2002, Winamp's maker, Nullsoft, was acquired by AOL for over $80 million in stock, where it's remained in development until now. A Mac and an Android version were even released in recent years, though they never found the same fan base that its customizable Windows client did.

No reason is given for Winamp's shutdown, but its popularity has certainly waned: simple, built-in audio solutions like iTunes are now ubiquitous across platforms, making Winamp a far more specialized app. In a retrospective published last year, Ars Technica reported that Winamp had existed for years on life support, but that those involved didn't believe it was dead yet. Now that it's nearly gone, those who want to relive old times should head over to Winamp's site before December 21st, when it'll no longer be available — its famous motto, of course, will always live on somewhere.

Run a local proxy that you can throttle. Or set QoS on your gaming packets.

Oh agreed. We're a web-based application, and customer support is included with service agreement. We do have a messaging service, and if its an "emergency" the support team head and the lead dev will get paged - but if its not an actual emergency, they raise hell. I can think of one issue in the last year that was overnight and an actual "our-fault" emergency, and the dev had the server back up and running within 10 minutes of the client calling with a problem. But then again, 99.9% of issues we deal with are on the customers end, not ours, so its a different story I guess. I'm just frustrated because I have people in a pissed off mood calling me expecting us to be useless - they always finish happy (har har), but damnit am I flustered at people starting off with a chip on their shoulder.

Long story short, gently caress places that don't actually offer decent support, because you make life for those of us who do worse.

IIRC, it is because early Winamp uses Windows API calls to do pretty much everything, so early winamp versions will work until the API hooks are removed from windows. Which might be never, since its pretty much bitmap graphics, audio, and filesystem.

People - even in this thread - don't think broadly enough about the issues involved I'm afraid. When you look at people discussing mobile devices in the office - including BYOB - their first priority, and often their only priority, is having reporting/management. The fact that they're allowing black-box portable computers onto their networks with no form of access control is something they appear to have blanked on (and some of the major MDM vendors don't actually know what "Access control" is!) - there's going to be a major scandal in the next 12 months, heads will roll, and hopefully lessons will be learned, but I'm afraid that most of the people being paid to do this won't actually have the first clue about what to do until then.

At-will employment is probably the best possible outcome for you, as an employee.

Right-to-work is a meaningless phrase unless you're in a union shop, and has absolutely no relation to non-union shops.

I don't see how either is terrible or how conflating them is possibly a good thing unless you just want to confuse people about employment law even more than they already are.

Sane companies (the kind in regulated industries where you could have a major scandal) don't allow BYOB devices onto unrestricted networks without a corporate image or corporate management of the device. Policies are already in place in banking and healthcare.
