People made fun of the boys in Heavy Rain because it was a David Cage game, and David Cage games are written like poo poo, people made fun of every character in Heavy Rain. poo poo the biggest meme I remember from it was "PRESS X TO JASON" which had nothing to do with making fun of the boys. People laughed about Duck's fate because since the beginning Duck was every lovely child character ever, the hyper 'oh he's so precocious' archetype that is just lazy writing. Also his literal first scene of note involved him getting a dude trapped under a tractor and totally loving the group. I treated him like poo poo in the game because he was a poo poo character, not because he was a boy. Hell even then most people felt pretty lovely about how Duck wound up, if only because the writing for his parents was really good in that scene. Meanwhile Clem had some cringe worthy moments, but for the most part was done in a subdued, blank slate way, which made it incredibly easy for anyone with young children in their lives to project them onto her, to bring out our instincts like that. The few moments of unique stuff she had like the final scene were very well written and acted, making them powerful.

It's a win-win for her as well since reddit also seems to espouse the worst of "gamer culture" too. I'm thinking of the /PCMasterRace nonsense that went down last week. And yeah, the writing of small boys in videogames just doesn't seem to work in 90% of cases. Child characters are extremely difficult to get right. Clem's a huge exception to the rule (maybe Ellie from The Last of Us as well, but she's older.) Actually, there's a perfect scenario you could've reversed genders and still made a good/great story of it: what if the Last of Us had starred a woman who'd lost her son and was now escorting a young boy? I can't think of a part of the story that would need changing. Ironically, I think people would've emphasized with a female main character in that role than Joel. Managed to get an actual review up for the first time in a while: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLoEpe8rGEs To The Moon! It's not exactly a well-timed video as the game's been out a couple of years, but I'm too poor to buy new games and then I wait months to play the stuff I buy on sale...I wish I hadn't waited so long in this case. For those of you who aren't aware of the game, it's an indie adventure game set in the future where you control two doctors who can play around inside a dying person's memories and give them new desires, to the point of their lives changing completely...so you can fulfill their dying wishes, at least inside their head. This particular patient, Johnny, wants to go to the moon but he has absolutely no idea why. Just as a warning, this video does contain more than a few spoilers - the game's pretty much all about story and that was most of what I wanted to talk about, so...yeah, you might want to play the game first if you haven't and you're interested in it. Enjoy! (Also, do try and ignore the horrid growth on my neck. My director is to blame.)

Haven't seen it mentioned on here, but Spoony has started to put up his stuff from his interview with Richard Garriott. There's a section where you get a brief tour of all the different iterations of the Ultima games and it's freaking amazing to see the technology he has to work with at the start. Garriott seems like a good sport, who knows what he's getting into. Angry Joe is there and there's a small Corporate Commander sketch, but it's actually pretty funny because Garriott is clearly trying not to crack up. The videos aren't too long and it's actually quite interesting, so I would recommend checking it out if you're at all interested.

He toned it down over time in favour of more straightforward talk. In fact, his style changes a lot around the Ghost in the Shell review. EDIT: \/ He still does goofy reactions to nudity like a dumb teen, but it's definitely toned down. Watch the Ghost in the Shell review as he approaches it a lot more seriously. I've been 'ing Sons of Anarchy for the past few seasons and was set to quit this season a couple months back but goons asked me to keep up with it. Even with as horrible as that show is, I am thankful that it's not Charmed. Phoebe is bad, but Piper is absolutely insufferable. I struggle to see a moment in the recap where she's not a wretched, bitter, condescending harpy. She makes the latter-series Gemma from Sons almost likeable, and that's a hell of an achievement. Love your impressions of her and Phoebe, by the way. It's up there with SFDebris' megalomaniac, comic super-villain Janeway ("One of you will be in charge of juggling live cobras -- the rest of you won't be so lucky!") Rose McGowan is great, though. She really does seem to be trying to make the best out of it and honestly I'd love to see the show more focused on her. Seeing the direction that the series would go in after her departure puts a different spin on Shannen Doherty's reputation as a difficult actor, because egos have gone berserk in her absence. Anyway, it was a long wait but the wait was definitely worth it! Mr.Radar posted:New Wheel of the Worst, finally featuring Tree Stand Safety . Also, does anyone know what's up with Rich's hand? I'm honestly baffled by the Incredible Instant Adoring Boyfriend (IIAB). What's even crazier is that I've found it on Youtube and the number of people that are actually, genuinely, over it tells me that not only was there a market for it after all, but that they were way ahead of their time!

His crossovers with Spoony are fun to watch, mainly because he gleefully keelhauls Noah through the worst kind of poo poo imaginable and you get to schadenfreude the hell out of it, but I'll admit there's a ton of hurdles to get over just on a presentation level alone. A fat, often-dirty, pimple-faced nerd with a bad haircut, gimmick hat, and a grating voice talking about anime? Yeah, I can see why it's a tough sell. But he puts a lot of heart and effort into it and actually takes the time to deconstruct what works/doesn't work with whatever show/movie he's reviewing and why it does or doesn't with historical context added in for good measure. I guess if you want to see Sage when he's "on", watch both parts of his Macross Plus review, or his Wings of Honneamise review.

They did seem to care at some point, but that shifted to always focusing on home or work. If they'd played it like burn-out it might've been interesting, but it's insufferable to watch characters every week who are just over it.

I didn't watch much of the clip, I think folks were mostly asking him about Star Trek. He said he didn't have any diva moments there, and that's what led to the Charmed bit. I don't think he had much "dirt" to say outside of that. He didn't say anything else about Charmed.

ANYWAY, I watched this latest video, and my only problem is that it's so academic. It's hardly a critique, just stating and pointing out all these tropes. It'd be more interesting if at some point in the video she actually discussed alternate takes on how to portray gender, such as the Pac-Woman/Mr. Pac-Woman that someone drew up as fanart after the video was made. It'd also be interesting to discuss how gender could even be differentiated on early game systems where sprites were extremely limited and tiny differences like bows and palette swaps were the only way to identify different characters as opposed to today's systems. It just seems like she's presenting all these facts... and that's it. Sorry, I just refound this thread from when it got moved out of PYF forever ago...

A pair of Happy Viking's Frothy Pint of Metal reviews for the band Sigh, featuring Diamanda Hagan. I like how their personas play off each other. They're giant hams trying to out-ham each other and it's hilarious. And this is a bonus, but Viking has gotten really good at making his terrible SFX look kinda good. I really like when Diamanda decides to ramble on about music and Dr. Who. Her opinions can be kind of...out there, her regular videos need serious editing, but she has such a pleasant voice. edrith fucked around with this message at 22:52 on Nov 26, 2013 |
