Is Young the Giant still indie? I have no idea. Wikipedia says they are so ok. They were the band with My Body and Cough Syrup which were decently popular a couple of years back.

I'm digging their new single in the build up to Mind Over Matter in January

Just saw Neutral Milk Hotel supported by Superchunk and M Ward. I can barely put into words how good NMH were, and it was a privilege to see them. Jeff Mangum was in good spirits and the songs just...worked. Superchunk were heaps of fun, but M Ward were boring as batshit.

Two new EP dropped in the past few weeks, one from The Growlers and Tennis.

The Growlers new EP, Gilded Pleasures, is pretty much LP long, less a track. If I had to describe them, its peak jim Morrison rambling with extremly overt sexual themes over some long forgotten surf guitar.

Tennis, a lovely indie pop band released Small Sounds that followed a really great album from last year.

Saw them live a few weeks ago - my girlfriend and I love them, but our main concern is that the band is going to break up once every single guy in the band falls in love with the female singer and it ends catastrophically.

Also, saw Sleigh Bells last night in DC... the show was only OK. I've seen them twice before (once on the Treats tour, and once on the Reign of Terror Tour), and while the crowd was always nuts on those tours for every single song, they weren't really able to get the crowd going at this show. Everyone went nuts when they played songs from Treats, went somewhat nuts when they played songs from Reign of Terror, but when they would play songs from the new album (which the set was loaded with), the crowd got pretty indifferent.

They also play with a live drummer now, but also use backing drumtracks. It really made some of the songs (particularly Treats-era) songs have a bit more punch to them, but others it just sounded like the drummer was playing along to a backing track

Been on a kick of Sky Ferreira thanks to a friends recommendation from here I believe, and got to see her last night, holy poo poo was she good live. She came off as being really grateful to the crowd and a bit shy, but she opened up a bit more at the end.

Edit>> Something I thought of later today, about half way through the show her keyboard player handed her a paper plan and told her to throw it during a song. It went about 3 feet into someones face and she struggled to get back on vocals for a verse because she was laughing so much. poo poo like that makes me appreciate live shows so much.

I just discovered Clive Tanaka y su orquesta the other day and have definitely enjoyed what I've heard so far. It's electronic dance-music, but less on the thumping bass and more on the melodic side. One review described them as a fusion of 70's disco and 80's electro-funk, and I couldn't agree more. They originally released their album exclusively on cassette too so they are more hip than anyone in this thread :smuggo:

Neu Chicago is my favorite song so far and has a kick rear end music video to boot.

The Sufjan Christmas albums are all pretty great, though I definitely prefer last year's Silver and Gold collection (volumes 6-10) to the first set. I think it's the only Christmas album I've ever loved enough to listen to many of the tracks all year round. "Christmas Unicorn" in particular, is just perfect.

So the radio occasionally plays this Phantogram song called Fall in Love off of their as-of-yet unreleased album Voices, but I literally cannot find it ANYWHERE online. Like, there is barely even a mention of it outside of some random Facebook thread.

Anyways, the song owns and I want to listen to it. Does anyone have a lead or am I really going to have to wait until their album drops NEXT YEAR? Ugh.

A while back, I saw the Colourist perform at my university's senior send-off thing. It seems they've become more popular as of late; It was nice recognizing them on the radio. They're a pretty upbeat rock band, and their drummer's voice is pretty unique-sounding (female) and contributes to a lot of the singing.

They've somewhat recently released an EP titled Lido, which adds some effects and electronic elements to their music compared to their earlier stuff. I like the entire EP, but there's one track that I particularly like:

Fix This - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af-UeGn7_C4

Through the Colourist's facebook page, I was linked to a band called Magic Man. I've been absolutely hooked since then (well, at least their latest EP You Are Here.) They group themselves as a synth rock band, and these guys also have a very energetic, upbeat sound. I've perused through their older music, but they sounded more "light" in their tone. Their newer music has a more "thick" electronic sound (if this makes any sense.) The last two tracks of the EP are my favorites:

Nova Scotia - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHzvwRFLWG0
Waves - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rECTcs937ho

Jagwar Ma released a new album called Howlin' a couple months back. Here's a pretty solid track from the album. I don't really like the other songs on the piece, but I'll listen to the rest of the album before I make any strong judgments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8KCPw9kYpo

CEO is releasing their album Wonderland in February and their first single Whorehouse is so much drat fun to listen to. You have to check it out cause I can't really put in words how weird the track sounds at first. It grabs your attention right away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjnHgWiTBDM

Shout Out Louds have always been a band I would label as your run-of-the-mill indie rock band. I guess they largely still are, but I enjoy the more adventurous sound they put forth on their recent release Optica. I really like Glasgow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zznayvhhXCY in particular, but Destroy gave me chills the first time I heard it if only for the violins during the chorus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4JEerGkN_Y. If you like the sound of Glasgow by the way I'd check out the band French Films's (yeah I know) first album especially the tracks Convict and Golden Sea.

Damien Jurado is also releasing his new album in January titled Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son. I heard this track over Sirius XMU during one of their blog radio sessions and I love everything about this song. The pacing is great, his voice does the atmosphere well, and its chorus is really nice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4sQz6Y5g88

Blouse in my opinion isn't anything special, but I've been really into barebones/straight forward simple rock lately so it caught my ear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIaj9T19Rxc

Still Corners's album that released earlier this year called Strange Pleasures is seriously beautiful. I don't think there's really anything else to say about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1ll91YBdVE

Wet released their self titled EP recently and the song You're the Best is a really sweet pop song. I'm not a fan of the auto tuning in the beginning or auto tune in general, but I have to admit it's a good song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfU71ZVqyMM

Also just wanted to add that the new Tennis EP Small Sounds is loving GREAT. Timothy is my favorite track off of it. I loved Cape Dory and after the disappointment of their sophomore attempt I'm really excited about their next album after hearing Small Sounds.

Nothing against people who do like them, but even with more than a couple listens I can't get into Sleigh Bells. I don't understand why people enjoy their music so much. I agree with the earlier posters saying it sounds like they're trying to bring back rap-rock. I feel like their lyrics are usually unbearably stupid to listen to. I mean really Bitter Rivals?
