I've become a huge fan of Harold Budd. I prefer his collaborations over much of his solo work, though some of it stands out (to me). If you enjoy Eno's Ambient 2: The Plateaux of Mirror, the selections below have a similar feel and most are very piano/reverb-centric. I really like Gas a lot. I have the 2008 Kompakt box set Voigt put out of the four albums, slightly remastered and edited. All of it -- and especially Pop, which I heard first in its standalone Mille Plateaux CD release before knowing anything else about Gas -- is ever so slightly unnerving! I can't get enough looped ambient drones, and how lo-fi it sounds at the same time. It's interesting too how, unlike say Eno's Ambient series of albums or albums by Carbon Based Lifeforms, Gas's music doesn't ever eventually build up and resolve. It just sort of... moves on and completes without much expectation. I actually find it interesting to actively listen to as well as to get lost within (and fall asleep to, as creepy as it is to wake up to it as well). Basically, I'm wondering what else I should check out considering how much I like Gas. Thanks, ambient friends!

Every once in a while, randomly clicking through related artists on last.fm brings me some great gems. The most recent of these is Andrew Chalk, who reminds me a lot of the minimalism of Stars of the Lid. Also: Thomas Köner - Teimo (chilly isolationist ambience) Troum & All Sides - Shutűn (dramatic, ominous and monolithic) Time Machines - s/t (Coil side project, very much worth looking into but quite disorienting) Deathprod - Morals and Dogma (incredibly dark) If you want some really minimal drone, look into Eleh. Any album will do. I hope you like sine waves. I have my own request. What other dark ambient producers are as good at creating alien atmospheres as Zoat-Aon? Who has his caliber of sound design and stereo imaging? Star Autopsy has been blowing my mind recently.

Glad I found this thread! Just a heads up - 33 1/3 just released their book on Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2. It's a decent read, although IMO the discussion about films/plays etc that have used SAW 2 as background music/score goes on for way too long. Also, here's an ambient mix from Surgeon (British Murder Boys, Sandwell District) at Freerotation 2013. It's a good mix and a pretty interesting selection of old psychedelia, classic ambient, and new synth stuff from a guy usually known for bleak industrial techno.

Man, I listened to SAW2 a couple days ago as I was falling asleep and I woke up at some point during the night to one of the tracks playing and it was probably the creepiest loving moment in my life I've experienced in a long time (don't remember the track of course). I need to check out more Aphex Twin too, since I've only heard that and the first ambient album he did... Do y'all like Seefeel at all? I listened to Polyfusia and Quique recently and thought they were really great. Apparently Aphex Twin was/is friends with Mark Clifford, the main guy behind Seefeel, and he genuinely likes their music too which is supposed to be quite rare for him regarding other artists especially ones he's remixed? Just a question, does some of Burzum's music count as ambient? Like the album "Sôl austan, Mâni vestan" from 2013, or the song "Rundgang Um Die Transzedentale Saule Der Singularitat" from his 2005 album "Filosofem"? Because it sure as hell isn't black metal, or very metal-ish at all. Also Wongraven(Sigurd Wongraven aka Satyr of the black metal band Satyricon)'s "Fjelltronen" from 1995.

There's a lot of ambient side projects to black metal, off the top of my head some of the better ones in my opinion include Mortiis - "The Stargate" Blakagir - "Carpathian Art Of Sin" Lord Wind - "Rites Of The Valkyries" Uruk-Hai - "Barbarians" and "The Lost Songs Of Middle Earth" Dunno if its just me or if the NSBM side of things is more inclined towards ambient sideprojects.

Out of curiosity, what are people's listening habits when it comes to ambient? I have a bunch myself but have no idea if my usage case is typical, although I'm guessing it is. I almost never just sit around and listen to it, or listen to it walking to work or in the car like with other music. Typically I put it on if I'm studying or programming, taking a nap, or the occasional trip.
