im in the process of authoring a roguelike game in python using the chronicles of doryen library. so far i have implemented randomized levels, monsters, items, an exp system, and a save function.

it will take me awhile to get anything remotely playable because i suck and im kind of learning as i go, but its something ive always wanted to do being a huge roguelike nerd, and i find that being able to express my creativity has been a huge stress relief

also my pathfinding system is hilariously broken. guess its time to learn a*

a* is super cool & fun because you can actually see it Do A Thing

it doesn't require advanced math or anything, it's just looking through the possibilities in an ordered way

here's a cool visualizer I ran into a while back that also has some variants; I really want to implement that guy's jump point search for something sometime

one last link: I used http://www.policyalmanac.org/games/aStarTutorial.htm when I was learning the algorithm and it worked well enough

one of my favorite bugs that I've run into was one of the times I hosed up an a* implementation, back in early 2010.

(The numbers are the path; it was trying to get from '0' to the black spot.)

I can't remember exactly what I did to cause this behavior, but it was pretty great.

you don't need the $99pa IOS dev licence until you want to deploy onto the device, you can use the sim for free

thanks to that inri holocaust this thread ended up on page five. wtf

anyway, current project status: i got the first two units of my modular bike light system assembled and installed. those being the headlamp and the battery/controller box. still to come are the taillamp and the addressable rgb side strips.

as for performance, uh...well let's just say i may have overdesigned this a little bit. it's hard to look down the bore of this lamp when i have it running at 25% pwm and at 100% it is literally blinding. i am going to need to go down to like 10% power or risk blinding drivers with glare instead of just warning them i'm there. the taillight which i haven't fully assembled yet has twice the output of the headlamp, and the side strips at full power have twice the output of the head and tail lights combined (six times that of the headlamp alone). and the battery and power supply should be able to maintain that level of output for at least half an hour

yep

i need a heating element shaped like this for my project:

but i can only find one, and it runs way too hot for my purposes. also its only available on ebay and amazon.

is there a digikey or farnell-like site where i can find a good, easily-searchable range of stuff like this, with reliable info about the manufacturer and ideally datasheets and other documentation?

looks like an immersion heater? maybe try mcmaster. also if it runs too hot you could probably just adjust the voltage being supplied to it. if its running off mains ac then a simple triac light dimmer knob should do the trick. a typical $10 one from hardware store supports up to 600W.

well the wattage would also mean id need to swap out the ssr ive chosen which would be annoying. anyway, this whole project is also a bit of a foray into the weird world of dfm, so i want to theoretically be able to order 1000 of these things, and i'd like to have a datasheet and other info for my own amusement.

like, i could hack this project together in an afternoon using some travel immersion heaters an off-the-shelf pid controller and a 25A ssr, but i want to take my time and learn about stuff like microcontrollers and encoders and heating elements and smt and all that cool poo poo,. part of the "fun" of it for me at least (if you can call it that) is learning how to buy components like a real engineering type person

anyway google for variations of "plumbing supplies" "immersion heater element". plumbers will have to buy one-offs for this sort of thing all the time.

for buying thousands, you'd usually ask for a catalogue from the manufacturer, then chat to a sales rep to set up the order. if you want, can probably get a catalogue delivered to you just by emailing the sales department of whoever

I have been battling porn addiction for years and it was just so easy to give it up this time.
