Something also to consider is that WWE wanted Shelton and Carlito to be upper-tier guys and main eventers. The only problem was Shelton and Carlito just wanted to stay in the mid-card. They were happy with what they were doing, and didn't want to go beyond that. So of course it pissed WWE off. It's what I'll never understand about WWE. You might have a guy who's a solid worker, great on the mic, and has the fans foaming at the mouth to see him at the top (Christian in '06 immediately springs to mind). But if the WWE has decided that "we say you're a midcarder, stop trying so hard", the guy won't be given a chance. But they'll waste numerous opportunities on guys who don't want the push they're trying to give them. Also, the whole "Shelton's Mama" thing was racist.

Vince loves the gimmick and it sells more PPVs. About it. Taker would have stayed Bikertaker forever if he could.

One of my biggest mark-out moments was John Cena returning as #30 in the Rotal Rumble, but after I literally jumped out of my seat at the sound of his music, and exclaimed "HOLY poo poo, HES BACK!!" to the entire pub I was watching it in, I realized that I was too drunk to remember who's music I was listening to, and shrunk into my seat when I realized it was John Cena. I hadn't heard the music in so long that I legitimately thought it was someone from the 80s or 90s that was coming out at #30 and winning the rumble.

According to Court Bauer, (I think, it may have been another writer) Vince saw Pirates and loved it so much he wanted a pirate. The original rumor was that Vince didn't like the gimmick and hadn't seen the movie which made sense since it came around the time Vince discovered the music of AC/DC. It turns out that Vince actually loves going to the movies and Pirate Paul was inspired by Vince seeing that movie. The writer wasn't specific about what kind of pirate, but it seems the rumor was BS since Vince liked the movie so much.

Opposite direction of a somersault, "somer-" being a derivative of "summer", a season associated with sun. Hence, reverse somersault. Technically it really should be called a wintersault instead. A somersault from the top rope is pretty much just a 450 splash because of the extra rotation. A full somersault to a standing opponent would land very awkwardly.

Joeslop posted:What were the most underwhelming surprise returns, where either people had no idea who the person was, didn't remember them, or just plain didn't care, not counting Royal Rumble surprises? Not really a surprise, but in the early 90's, Bob Backlund made a comeback after being gone for eight years. The WWF style had shifted and he was a totally bland wrestleguy in a time of colorful gimmicks. Nobody really cared about him even though they kept talking up how much of a big deal he used to be. The only time he got a big reaction was at Royal Rumble '93 where he lasted over an hour and got third place. He had a moment where he had Yokozuna on the ropes and then got eliminated to a fairly strong reaction. They did gently caress-all with him for a while, having him get squashed by Razor Ramon at the following Wrestlemania. They finally struck insane gold when he lost a match against Bret for the title and completely snapped after the match before coming to his senses and realizing he blacked out. At first this was going to be explained as being Papa Shango's doing, but Backlund was so awesome at it that they just had him go fully crazy and that gave us MISTER Bob Backlund. quote:Conversely, what were the most underwhelming surprised Royal Rumble returns? Have there been any where people didn't flip out? The early Rumbles have the worst surprise entrants. Guys like Dory Funk Jr., Carlos Colon and Dick Murdock.
