Yeah, I get why it's such a popular scenario, but even starting with the premise of the Nazis winning the war means you've pretty much abandoned any attempt at realism, so you might as well just do whatever you want with it. On that note, an "alt history" story I really liked is the novela Thor Meets Captain America, which is not a Marvel comic, but a response to a challenge to write the most realistic scenario in which the Nazis win. How do they do it? They summon the Norse gods to fight the war for them by using the Holocaust as mass human sacrifice.

Well that's not a sentence I ever expected to read in my life.

For god's sake, the Tropers even have physical proof of a successfully realized altrnate history that has tie ins to their precious animes. The Kerberos Saga (the series that the film Jin-Roh is part of), is an alternate history where Germany won the war and occupied Japan. And it has a rather extensive background, because Mamoru Oshii is an obsessive for tiny details.

Oh boy, TVTropes has a review section. As someone who dabbles in reviews and criticism, I'm interested to see how much more effort I put into the process than tropers.

First of all, let's see what they're reviewing. The 20 most recent reviews:

- Remus Lupin, P.I. (Harry Potter fanfiction)
- Confused Matthew (YouTube critic)
- My Sister's Keeper (book)
- Bioshock Infinite (video game)
- Frozen (animated film)
- Get A Horse! (animated short)
- Left Behind (book)
- God of War (video game, 3 reviews)
- Phineas and Ferb (cartoon)
- My Little Pony (cartoon, 2 reviews)
- Vampire Knight (japanese anime)
- Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (Harry Potter fanfiction)
- The Ugly Barnacle (a three sentence joke in Spongebob)
- The Stalking Zuko Series (Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfiction)
- RWBY (cartoon)
- Master of Martial Hearts (japanese anime)
- A Game of Thrones (book)

Wow, reviews of popular series (which already have a number of reviews) and reviews of fanfiction that most people will never bother to read! Yep, sounds like TVTropes.
As to the quality of reviews:

Too predictable, childish, over-rated, and stupid
They always have the same line up every time!!! Candace never busts her brothers (EVER!!) if they have they need to show it more instead of the same ones!! I've seen the one where she does buts it's perry's dream! Make it where they really get busted and GROUNDED!!!! I can plot the whole story: first they show the theme, next they show phineas, ferb, and perry in the backyard as the mom always has "arrands" to do, perry goes missing and goes to doofensmerks place which is where perry gets in a weak trap, doof says his long/short story, tells about his inators, perry gets out of the trap as doof tries to start up his inator; meanwhile at home the two bros build whatever crap they build, Isabella and everyone else comes in, Isabella say her idiotic catchphrase "watcha doin'?", phineas tells them so they join, they start to sing their dumb A$$ songs as they build their invention; back at doofs perry beats the snot out of doofensmerk and aims the dumb thing at phineas and ferbs house so that as soon as candace sees phineas and ferbs creations and tells mom to go out to the backyard the dumb contraption disappears and makes Candace feel like a crazy idiot so ; at doofs place the inator blows up and perry flies away and doof says "curse you perry the platypus!"; so perry appears back at his home so somebody in the family always notices perry is there so then it ends, then in the end credits they show the song they sung in the episode, so that concludes the stupid episode!!!! Can they at least make an episode where they get busted cuz if they don't they are gonna loose ALOT of fans cuz I'll tell ya now they just lost one!!!!! (ME!!!)

Uh-huh, uh-huh, I agree.

mudge reviews My Little Pony posted:

Decent, but nothing to write home about.
Pretty good for a kids show, but nothing special otherwise. Starting off, it takes no real risks with the characters. The tomboy having self-worth issues, the shy one having a hidden strength, the bookworm and "straight man" so to speak being not so above everything after all, the seemingly high-class one actually being sweet, none of that is new. It's all been done before and frankly, all been done better.

The Aesop's are often subject to Fridge Logic and Unfortunate Implications, with Mysterious Mare-Do-Well, Dragon Quest and A Friend In Deed being three of the most prominent examples. There have been entire headscratcher, wall banger and dethroning moment pages on those, so I won't go into them further here.

The world-building is lacking to say the least. Despite seeing griffons, minotaurs, zebras and dragons, we know almost nothing about any of them (other than dragons being jerks every time they're seen). Plot elements often come out of nowhere despite opportunities to set them up earlier, such as Shining Armor. This is likely in part due to the episodic nature of the show, but it's still jarring.

One would expect a largely slice of life series to not have many overarching plotlines, and one would be correct. Powerful threats like Discord, Sombra and Chrysalis are brought up and then dealt with in two episodes at absolute maximum. There isn't much build-up, nor are we given much insight into them. Where they come from, how they came to be the way they are, any sort of insight into their characters simply isn't there.

This ability to take down seemingly epic threats easily and then spend a whole episode trying to figure out who ate a cake or an entire episode not realizing they have the wrong person can also jar a more serious watcher and threaten to break the suspension of disbelief.

Now, I've been pretty negative here, so let's get on to what the show does right. The animation is fluid and easy to watch. The songs (with a couple of exceptions) tend to be well-written and enjoyable, and it does manage to work the aesops in without being irritating.

As a childrens show, it is a good, though not spectacular series. However, it fails to build the world, tell any sort of continuous, compelling story over the seasons, or go very deep into anything, and generally lacks to substance to be anything more than a good kids show

Yes, complain some more about a children's TV show designed to sell toys failing to take full advantage of the medium. Complain some more about children's show writers not writing sophisticated edgy/grimdark plots for the full enjoyment of its manchild viewers. Complain some more. Complain some more! :unsmigghh:

Hyperbole aside, the review is kind of lame. The point of a review is to convey the reviewer's thoughts on a story, letting potential viewers know if a story is worth their time or not. This review runs counter to that, as it seems like it's aimed partially at people who already watch the show, making it functionally useless! Like, each section starts off as a review ("The world-building is lacking, to say the least"), but quickly into referential criticism that requires the reader to have already seen the show ("Plot elements often come out of nowhere despite opportunities to set them up earlier, such as Shining Armor"). I don't know what you're talking about, I haven't watched the show! This seems to be common to TVTropes reviews. See if you can spot the review/criticism duality in this one!

Aprilla reviews Master of Martial Hearts posted:

Mediocre, Not Horrible
As the trope page itself notes, this series appears to be an immature attempt at deconstructing the panty fighter genre. A noble effort, but undisciplined and poorly focused. The twist at Episode 5 provides a thought-provoking commentary on fighting shows and the fan service given to them, but the show does an inadequate job of executing whatever criticism it is directing toward people who typically seek out ecchi-style anime.

The animation is sub-par, the voice acting is sophomoric, and the fight scenes are unnecessarily hyperactive. However, I will say that the premise does have potential. Was that potential wasted? Many other viewers argue that it certainly was, or that there was no potential to be harnessed to begin with. I'm of the former opinion, but the issue I have with this anime is similar to the issue I have with similar premises seen in Sucker Punch, Elfen Lied and Evangelion. Using fanservice in the process of forming a criticism about fanservice is a tricky task much in the way establishing a criticism of war is difficult to do when you're using war itself as the vehicle for your plot.

The anime is mostly forgettable, although it left me with some interesting ideas about how we view combative women in anime. MOMH seems to be struggling to suggest that watching scantily clad, buxom women duke it out doesn't change the fact that they are essentially human beings committing acts of violence against each other and the consequences that entails. Many people also seem to think this anime was just abysmally bad, but if you think this is the worst anime ever produced, you probably haven't seen a lot of anime. Personally, I think most anime is crap admittedly due to the fact that most of it doesn't appeal to me. And believe me, I've given many anime a chance. Suffice to say I've seen much worse. MOMH is worth a quick view if you're killing time, but I wouldn't say it's incredibly painful to watch.

If the anime is trying to make a critical point about ill-conceived fan service, there are better ways to do this. Anime like Queen's Blade, Freezing and Kämpfer may be among its targets of deconstruction, but the pointlessness of MOMH's fan service hampers whatever thesis it has. Give it a quick watch, but don't overreact to its flaws. MOMH isn't made out to be Shakespeare, folks

"But it's a deconstruction of pornographic fighting tournament cartoons!" :tvtropes:

I love how they use "it's not the worst thing I've seen" and "it's not Shakespeare" in an otherwise negative review. One seems obvious from the genre alone, and the other isn't useful unless you know what they're comparing it to (and, even then, it probably says more about the reviewer).

Worth noting here that Shakespeare isn't exactly some remote bastion of high art, either - he was very willing to pander to the lowest common denominator, with his most famous romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, starting out with a page's worth of dick jokes. When guys like this reviewer say 'it's not Shakespeare', they're often not demonstrating (like they think) that X horrible work of fiction had different goals to Shakespeare's stuff and should be judged on different lines. They're simply underlining that X horrible show was vastly less competent at accomplishing the same goals as Shakespeare. Which is already obvious. Because the show is horrible.
