On that note, an "alt history" story I really liked is the novela Thor Meets Captain America, which is not a Marvel comic, but a response to a challenge to write the most realistic scenario in which the Nazis win. How do they do it? They summon the Norse gods to fight the war for them by using the Holocaust as mass human sacrifice. Well that's not a sentence I ever expected to read in my life.

For god's sake, the Tropers even have physical proof of a successfully realized altrnate history that has tie ins to their precious animes. The Kerberos Saga (the series that the film Jin-Roh is part of), is an alternate history where Germany won the war and occupied Japan. And it has a rather extensive background, because Mamoru Oshii is an obsessive for tiny details.

I was reading through this thread again and Saint Drogo bought up Flexible Survival still having a TVTropes page. Surely they would have deleted it now that the hated goons has highlighted it being furry porn. But guess what, it's still there. Good job on the porn purge, that's some fine police work there boys. I mean, is it fine just because it's not pedoshit (I'm sorry, lolicon)? It's clearly a porn game since... you know... quote:Black Comedy Rape: In a way, though getting raped is how you gain new powers for the most part.

You know, I'm not sure if I can pinpoint what the most disturbing part of that entry is. Its existence is up there, but I think in the end I'm going to have to go with 'and specifically, it must be rape, not consensual sex.'

Oh boy, TVTropes has a review section. As someone who dabbles in reviews and criticism, I'm interested to see how much more effort I put into the process than tropers. First of all, let's see what they're reviewing. The 20 most recent reviews: - Remus Lupin, P.I. (Harry Potter fanfiction) - Confused Matthew (YouTube critic) - My Sister's Keeper (book) - Bioshock Infinite (video game) - Frozen (animated film) - Get A Horse! (animated short) - Left Behind (book) - God of War (video game, 3 reviews) - Phineas and Ferb (cartoon) - My Little Pony (cartoon, 2 reviews) - Vampire Knight (japanese anime) - Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (Harry Potter fanfiction) - The Ugly Barnacle (a three sentence joke in Spongebob) - The Stalking Zuko Series (Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfiction) - RWBY (cartoon) - Master of Martial Hearts (japanese anime) - A Game of Thrones (book) Wow, reviews of popular series (which already have a number of reviews) and reviews of fanfiction that most people will never bother to read! Yep, sounds like TVTropes. As to the quality of reviews: Talisha Luvs Pink reviews Phineas and Ferb posted:Too predictable, childish, over-rated, and stupid Uh-huh, uh-huh, I agree. mudge reviews My Little Pony posted:Decent, but nothing to write home about. Yes, complain some more about a children's TV show designed to sell toys failing to take full advantage of the medium. Complain some more about children's show writers not writing sophisticated edgy/grimdark plots for the full enjoyment of its manchild viewers. Complain some more. Complain some more! Hyperbole aside, the review is kind of lame. The point of a review is to convey the reviewer's thoughts on a story, letting potential viewers know if a story is worth their time or not. This review runs counter to that, as it seems like it's aimed partially at people who already watch the show, making it functionally useless! Like, each section starts off as a review ("The world-building is lacking, to say the least"), but quickly into referential criticism that requires the reader to have already seen the show ("Plot elements often come out of nowhere despite opportunities to set them up earlier, such as Shining Armor"). I don't know what you're talking about, I haven't watched the show! This seems to be common to TVTropes reviews. See if you can spot the review/criticism duality in this one! (And...I've seen...I've seen a lot of anime. ) I own and keep a copy of it solely because it's such a horrible abortion of content.

"But it's a deconstruction of pornographic fighting tournament cartoons!" I love how they use "it's not the worst thing I've seen" and "it's not Shakespeare" in an otherwise negative review. One seems obvious from the genre alone, and the other isn't useful unless you know what they're comparing it to (and, even then, it probably says more about the reviewer).

kaleidolia posted:"But it's a deconstruction of pornographic fighting tournament cartoons!" Worth noting here that Shakespeare isn't exactly some remote bastion of high art, either - he was very willing to pander to the lowest common denominator, with his most famous romantic tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, starting out with a page's worth of dick jokes. When guys like this reviewer say 'it's not Shakespeare', they're often not demonstrating (like they think) that X horrible work of fiction had different goals to Shakespeare's stuff and should be judged on different lines. They're simply underlining that X horrible show was vastly less competent at accomplishing the same goals as Shakespeare. Which is already obvious. Because the show is horrible.

Souldbonding is a lot like having headmates, except instead of anime and video game characters living inside your head, they live inside your room with you. But you should be careful with DLC... She has many guardians and if you make her cry Sephiroth will cut you with his giant sword in a blog post she'll write. I'm pretty sure she's been around since Livejournal started collecting these types, before they all migrated to Tumblr.

(This was impossible, of course, but they tried.) I think soulbonding may also be a general term that encompassses headmates, astral plane marriages, and all that jazz, but I haven't been keeping up on my abyss gazing recently.
