I was wondering if you guys could recommend me some ska bands, I don't know much about ska but I wanted to get my brother a record or two for christmas. I think he likes third wave the most but likes other styles as well. Some of the bands he listens to are:

-Buck-o-nine
-The Toasters
-The Slackers
-Pie Tasters
-Goldfinger

If you could recomend me some similar bands that would be great! Thanks.

The Selecter.... Two-tone ska with a lady singer and rad as hell. Particularly Too Much Pressure.

The most disappointing thing about the Hippos changing styles was not even going away from ska but that they no longer went crazy on the synthesizer either. Their final album had no personality to it. It was like bad lite-rock.

That's a decent read. Mostly though, I'm still ecstatic over finding a copy of the The Hippos self titled album earlier this week. That's been my holy grail of used CD searches for years. As Quest For Glory II says, it's not a great album, but there are a couple of good tracks on it.

What are everybody top albums of 2013?

For me, there's Streetlight, obviously. I algo got the new LTJ and FIF and enjoyed them both. The Ska-P release earlier this year was also pretty good. Even though I still have no clue what they're singing about. The Beebs/Moneymakers record is fun, if a bit short.

Any obvious albums I'm missing?

They've posted studio pics on their facebook in the last few months. They wanted it out this year but it slid to 2014. They posted this week:

Mad Caddies posted:

We made it back from Brazil late last night, and we're heading directly back into the studio today. We'll have our new album wrapped up by the end of the year, and we're planning to release it in early April on Fat Wreck. Stay tuned for an official release date.

I wonder what it will sound like, since they've drifted more towards reggae. I really liked Keep it Going and Elwood felt very blah to me. I want some psychotic circus punk!!

I mention IV4K a lot in this thread, but does anyone know if there's a way to buy their b-sides compilation If You Can't Make It Big... Just Give Up! in the US? As far as I can tell it was only ever released on UK iTunes. The "label" that released it doesn't even seem to have a website.

Satori, Monkey, Deals Gone Bad, Westbound Train, Go Jimmy Go for more modern bands. For older bands check out The Specials, Madness and the English Beat.

Who enjoys ska covers of Christmas-themed blink-182 songs? I do!

http://iv4k.bandcamp.com/album/i-wont-be-home-for-christmas

Edit: They don't mention it anywhere, but if you buy it (pay what you want), the b-side is another cover, Eddie Money's "Take Me Home Tonight".
