EAT THE EGGS RICOLA posted:What is the bad feeling you get? Is it the same roll penalty from having sils on the ascent? I've noticed a lot of OoD spawns (about 100') start showing up after opening it, including packs of orc soldiers showing up 3 steps away after opening right at the beginning. Then again, getting Orcrist out of the present helped with that, so I'm really getting used to getting extra early XP in addition to a nice piece of equipment.

There's also a newgame+ option for Eldritch..... Which does nothing but double the amount of damage you take from any source. No new items or anything. I did kind of have fun with it though but I was definitely playing the game wrong since I just bunny hopped around the levels hunting dynamite to skip the majority of the levels. As a lovecraftian stealth game it's awful but as a game where you try to just beat it as fast as possible it's kind of fun. Not worth sales price at all though.

You can always watch a recording of an online game in console, it's even possible to convert ttyrec to video using some software. I wouldn't know about tiles, though.

I have to say that I didn't enjoy the demo (which seems to have vanished from the developer's website?) very much. I'm not sure how representative it was of the full game, though.

I didn't enjoy LoD. I dig what they were trying to do and wanted to like it but they skewed so simplistic I found it pretty boring. Last time I played item management was really annoying but it might have been improved (it seemed so obviously bad it had to be a mistake).

In ADOM is it known what monsters will appear at certain locations? I'm trying to find a doppleganger lord for Thrundarr and so far have just been wandering in the infinite dungeon around level 15. Also is there a good strategy to level up a troll? I'm at 11 and it already feels really slow.

I mean, there are a number of set monsters in the game, and some areas where some types of monsters are more common than others (Assassins in DDL level 3, undead in the pyramid). Usually I go through the first 19 arena fights to see if what he wants shows up there. Otherwise, hanging out around the depth that the dwarven halls shows up is a good place to look. Also remember that the actual danger level of the Infinite Cave is like a fourth of the displayed level.

I'm not sure if ADOM changed, but I think there's also level caps on certain areas so if you go too high of a level, you can't get into the Pyramid I think. Which isn't really a huge deal unless you need some of the guaranteed items from it, but they're pretty common (aside from the artifacts).

Like, straight up your level is too high, you can't go in here? Seems kind of lovely when there are guaranteed drops to be had. I'm trying something similar in Dungeonmans, if you waste time in dungeons that are too far under your level you get no XP or drops. There's a warning too on the way in, you actually have to choose "I don't care, I'm going in!" People do it anyway, they'd rather clear three whole floors with zero reward to get to a 4th floor which is just under their level instead of taking 15 or so steps southeast and finding a dungeon that's on level. I guess that means I need to generate more dungeons so it feels like there's more options available.

I think the only place like that is the Pyramid, and you get an invitation (an immediately generated papyrus scroll) to visit it as soon as you're eligible. When you get too high level, the mummy in charge hides it again. The tool cache has no items that can't be acquired elsewhere; the mummy has two artifact drops that are unique, though. It's not a thing for all dungeons, and it's completely optional, though getting the items hidden in it (or dropped from the boss) can't hurt.

I think that's just a special thing for the pyramid, you have to be "invited" or something at some level, and then if you wait too long(in terms of XP) it closes, so there's a pretty narrow window for when you can do it. e;fb

Here's a ghost of @-mas past/present/future: The next major release of Angband (v3.5) is now available. Fairly extensive list of changes from 3.4, and definitely a lot of differences if your last experience was years ago on 2.X or 3.0.X. One thing to watch out for is that no-selling is now on by default (but can be changed via birth options). No-selling means you can still ID anything by selling it to a store, but you get zero gold, also gold drops are bigger in the dungeon to compensate. Stores are also now guaranteed to have unlimited stacks of some critical dungeon consumables, so no more going down to DL1 and resting to see if the stores restock Word of Recall... Some flavor changes as well (groups of monsters, new room designs and pits, etc)

Angband is the only one of the big three I never beat, but I don't think I ever will now Maybe it's massively changed, but when I last played it, it was a huge loving slog to get to the endgame, and one misstep along the way would burn up hours of effort. It always took me way longer to get anywhere in Angband with a shitton of utter boredom on the way there than it did in Adom or Nethack. Plus the dungeon was boring as hell and it felt like Robotron ascii edition to me. Or maybe I was just doing it wrong I'll look at the new version for old times sake.

Angband's a long game, no doubt about that. It also lets you set your own pace (there's no food clock or light clock or anything like that), which tends to mean inexperienced players will set a very slow pace. I recommend diving as recklessly as possible instead. This has two advantages: 1) the dungeon feels much more dangerous, making exploration more interesting, and 2) when you die, you won't have as much time invested in your character. It is possible, with skilled play, to survive deep in the dungeon with very little in the way of gear and levels, so there's no real requirement to e.g. clear every level in the dungeon. You can just dive down to 98 (one level before endgame starts) and scurry around looting whatever you can while hoping that the monsters don't look at you too hard.

Do the same rules apply in the newer versions as to having a certain resistance before hitting a depth? Like I remember confusion and I think poison resistance being some of the earlier ones needed.

Social Animal posted:Do the same rules apply in the newer versions as to having a certain resistance before hitting a depth? Like I remember confusion and I think poison resistance being some of the earlier ones needed. That was always just groupthink, really. It's not that you'll die instantly if you go beneath X depth without Y resist, just that some monsters start showing up that can hit that resistance hole -- so you either get the resist or you avoid those monsters. Specifically for poison you want to avoid drolems and ancient multihued dragons. The only resists I really consider non-negotiable are Free Action (tons of monsters hit to paralyze) and resistance to fire/cold/electricity/acid/poison. You can put off poison for longer (like to 2500'-3000' depending on how cocky you feel) but you'll want it eventually. The other four are just super-common and have absurdly high damage caps, so eventually flying without them means risking instadeath no matter how many hitpoints you have or how careful you are about what you fight. Ideally I'd say you ant resistance to the basic four by, oh, 1500'ish? Depends on how many hitpoints you have, too. As for confusion/blindness: carry potions of Cure Serious or Cure Critical Wounds, and a Staff of Teleportation. The former clear status ailments, the latter can be used even when confused as a last-ditch escape (albeit with a failure rate).

Do the Sots: The Pit expansions add any abilities or anything more involved to the gameplay? I picked up the base game on sale, and I like the general aesthetic, but the core gameplay seems to be 'shoot dude, stab dude, run out of durability on your shoot/stab tool'. Also my inventory gets clogged with piles of garbage and I can't find any recipes - is this a wiki-only adventure?
