Hawk is Howling is alright but Hardcore Will Never Die is amazing, and now Rave Tapes is disappointing. I don't think Mogwai has ever put out a bad album, but some of them are certainly much better than others.

e: I just found out there's a Vitamin String Quartet Tribute album for Sigur Ros that came out this year. Doesn't seem like they'd even need one since their music is so close to that style already, but it still sounds cool. Here's Gobbledigook:

My frustration with Mogwai is always what goes on the album vs what is left off. Examples:

'Slight Domestic' (left off of 'Hardcore Will Never Die')
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua-tqLd7yqk

'I Can't Remember' (left off of 'Young Team'.. I think)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0ters5iEJA

'Close Encounters' (left off of 'Rock Action' which was hardly a long album and in need of less songs anyway)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHfKLIxgLU8

'Sad DC' (left off of 'Happy Songs for Happy People')
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=andoKSsnmCY

But then I have always found myself liking b-sides more than most people. The single version of 'Christmas Steps' is vastly inferior to the album version though:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65f3QbEci48

On a different subject, I enjoy the gently caress Buttons cover of 'Mogwai Fear Satan'

You forgot one of the best b sides
"Dracula Family" from Hawk is Howling

I still stand by my thought that Mogwai are best listened to as a whole collection of songs rather than by album.

It's a crime that Slight Domestic didn't make it on Hardcore Will Never Die :smith: I love most of the songs from that album, but Slight Domestic is even better than most of those.

I'd start with the actual very beginning, Ten Rapid. It's not great but it's not very long and the version of "Summer" on it is one of the best songs they've ever done and completely destroys the version on Young Team.

I'd start with the actual true very beginning, Tuner/Lower. :goonsay:

Really, what's worked for me and many others, has been finding a single you particularly enjoy, listen to the album it came from, and go from there. Mr Beast is what first got me into Mogwai.

Fire up Spotify.
If you like the first, listen to the second.
If you like both, buy the cd. But buy Young Team anyway, because it's objectively awesome.

Mogwai Fear Satan/Like Herod
Auto Rock/We're No Here
Kids Will Be Skeletons/Stop Coming To My House
The Precipice/I Love You, I'm Going To Blow Up Your School
You're Lionel Ritchie/Letters to the Metro
Punk Rock/Cody
2 Rights Make 1 Wrong/Nothing, Because Rock Action Is The Worst (which sounds suspiciously like a Mogwai song title)

No love for You Don't Know Jesus? Also Rock Action gets better when you pair it with My Father, My King

Anyone looking to (still) get into Mogwai just listen to the Special Moves live disc. If none of those songs appeal to you, just give up.

Today marks 20 years since Sigur Ros formed as a band. And I started listening to them in late 2005, so I've been listening to them for a little less than half the time they've been around.

Heads-up: If you were planning on seeing the movie Lone Survivor, or even if you weren't, Explosions in the Sky did the score. I know, it doesn't seem like the type of movie they would score, but it was directed by Peter Berg, the same guy who directed Friday Night Lights which they also scored, and I think they're friends with the director. I just finished watching the movie and the score is pretty good. It sounds like a lot of other EitS stuff but it's all new material.

Whaaaat? Rock Action is short but flawless in my opinion - it's like the perfect Mogwai EP. "You Don't Know Jesus", "Take Me Somewhere Nice", "Secret Pint" are all awesome.

Did somebody call about a Ravager problem?
So I was just browsing around YouTube videos as usual, and a little video popped up in the suggestions:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyfdVdLGQpg

Just whoa. I was expecting a traditional rock band, and someone even described it as prog-rock, but this is straight up post-rock if I ever heard it, and it's really great. Is anyone else familiar with Toundra? This just came out of nowhere for me but I couldn't possibly recommend this album enough to any post-rock fan.

For some reason I bought this album blind off Bandcamp probably a year ago but I never actually listened to it. Maybe I should.

Been listening to the latest Upcdownc - Black Sea the past few weeks and it's much stronger (and heavier) than their previous two albums. I'd put the latter half of the album up there with Embers.

I'd love to be able to get one of these, but I would open it and drink it and of course the correct thing to do is to put it away somewhere and never take it out or look at it but periodically check on eBay and see how much it would be worth if you were to sell it which, of course, you never will.

The disruptive powers of excessive national fecundity may have played a greater part in bursting the bonds of convention than either the power of ideas or the errors of autocracy.
Well it's not like Glenallachie produces anything special and worthy of mention. But I'd still like to get one of those bottles for the novelty of it. :(

Speaking of Mogwai, I saw them last night for the first night of the rave tapes tour and it was excellent. The production is nice and it sounded excellent. New songs definitely need tightening a bit (Lord Is Out Of Control sounded a bit off) but Deesh made its live debut and sounded great. It was an interesting setlist, no Mogwai Fear Satan or Hunted by a Freak, which is a shame because it was the first time I saw them and I love those songs, but i'm also sure others won't miss them and will appreciate something different. Well worth seeing this tour, i'd say.

Also on a tangent, Aiden Moffat supported and was brilliant, closing with a spoken word children's story which will apparently become a book. Unfortunately he had to leave to see his daughter so no r u still in 2 it which is a shame!

Mark from Explosions in the Sky and Matt Cooper (Eluvium) have a new project together called Inventions and they released their first track called Entity. Overall, it's not grabbing me as much as any Explosions stuff or any Eluvium stuff, but there are parts I do like.

Their album comes out on April 1st.
