lol is this for real? Because if so thank god, Inspector Spacetime is the worst thing ever.

All i know is Dan Harmon said there'd be no more inspector spacetime in season 5, due to legal issues if nothing else. But that was pretty early on when they were shooting season 5, so I could be wrong. I hope it's still true because, as you say, Inspector Spacetime was always garbage.

Edit: This isn't the interview I was talking about, but it was the closest thing to confirmation I could find on short notice:

"Harmon has stressed the importance of spending more time on character development, which is why the first few episodes of Season 5 are not larger than life, like Community's famous paintball installments. And some ideas - like Abed's favorite TV show, Inspector Spacetime - were so overused last year that Harmon decided to retire them."

All I've heard was that Harmon felt they went too into the Inspector Spacetime gag and it certainly won't be as prevalent if it shows up at all. Maybe a poster in the background or something.

It was already clear in season 4 that the inspector spacetime show wouldn't be back in a significant way: it was revamped (to the lowest common denominator) for american audiences and therefore ruined for Abed (by Pierce in the focus group) ; a fitting end to the whole thing actually..

Maybe you guys are confusing it with the actor who played Inspector Spacetime trying to Kickstart an Inspector Spacetime web series only to be threatened with legal action and fired from the show since he doesn't actually own the character.

No I remember a Harmontown podcast- the same one where he brought up some loony fans to discuss his harmonisms and saying stupid poo poo that gets mentioned on various sites- where he said something like there was a lot of legal stuff in using Inspector Spacetime and it was some guy's job to watch all episodes of Dr Who and make sure the Spacetime stuff wasn't too close to copyright infringement.

Good riddance.

I can see when you are lying.

I still believe that the overwhelming response to Inspector Spacetime came not, primarily, from Community fans, but from Doctor Who fans. They're the ones who latched onto it and made pages and pages about it, copying everything from Who and changing it slightly, cause isn't it funny if we call an episode that was titled "Turn Left," "Turn Right?" Get it? hahaha.

Pierce inadvertently ruining the show was by far the best part of the convention episode and one of the few things Season 4 did right. There isn't a single good reason to bring it back again and Harmon knows it.

Plus, I think they've done more than that. I've heard that there's some kind of Inspector Spacetime convention episode in season four that's filled with characters and references, but I can't be sure because I might have dreamt about it during a bout with food poisoning.

Killing Inspector Spacetime and breaking up Britta & Troy's half-baked romance were two long term plot things that season 4 got right. On the other hand, it sucks that they blew Jeff's dad being revealed, since Dan Harmon had originally wanted to get Bill Murray to play him.

Usually when two shows are rammin together consonants and vowels to make funny words they're both safe just doing whatever. But when show A has a 50 year omni-media prescense, show B has to be careful not to accidentally reuse anything from show A.

I just saw that the writers of season 4 did an Ask Me Anything on Reddit about a year ago and it's kind of heartbreaking to see nice, funny human beings associated with that garbage. :smith:

quote:

Q: Is there any episode or scene that you wish you could have a redo, because you were never satisfied with how it read or because you came up with an alternate punchline that worked way better?

Megan Ganz:
Sigh. This is probably a bad thing to say -- especially when we haven't aired one episode yet -- but I wish I could redo the finale of season 4. I had to write it in a bit of a pinch, during a period of upheaval on the show. I wrote it too long (like... 6 minutes too long) and we had to cut a ton out of it in the edit bay. Part of me fears I was too freaked out to do my best work on it, because I wanted it to be a finale worthy of a show it could never be worthy of. Finales are generally terrible, and I am expecting that people will say this one is trying to hard, because it is. Because I was. God was I ever trying too hard on that one. My hope is that you'll all love the Halloween episode and forgive me for the finale. Maybe you'll like it. I have no way of knowing anymore.

[...]

Q: What was one joke/line/scene that you were really proud of that never made it into an episode?

Megan Ganz:
We had to cut a bunch from the finale I wrote for season 4. I had a Leonard exchange with Annie that I really liked, but it's on the cutting room floor. (Not literally of course, everything is digital.) It went something like.
Leonard sees Annie trying on a wedding veil.
LEONARD: If you build it, he will come.
ANNIE: Shut up, Leonard. I know you have a soft spot for me.
LEONARD: You look like you should be tattooed on a sailor.

Tim Saccardo:
Off the top of my head, there was a joke this year where Pierce yelled at Jeff "Don't you dare 'She's All That' Me!" and Jeff looked at him in awe that he would even know that reference and Pierce yelled back "What? I have cable!"

I know almost nothing about copyright law, but there's something I'm confused about. Why exactly would NBC and Community need to be careful with the legal stuff with Inspector Spacetime when it's a parody? I thought parodies were supposed to be protected under Fair Use laws?

Fair Use only exists in the US. The UK/Commonwealth mostly has "Fair Dealing", which doesn't always cover parody.

For example, here in Canada, we don't have strong parody exceptions like the US, unfortunately:

quote:

Unlike fair use in the United States, which recognizes that parody can be fair, fair dealing in Canada has not definitely been found to contain exceptions for parody.

Apparently a bill had been introduced a few years ago that would have fixed that, but then our government had to call an election, and it died in the process. (It looks like the UK is currently considering a similar addition to their fair dealing laws.)

So I'm guessing, if you're dealing with a UK property (and want to syndicate your own show that's parodying it in the UK), you might have to be a bit more careful since they don't seem to have those exceptions concretely set in law, yet.

Do we even have a proper quote that lawyers were involved? It's probably more that it was dumb and over used by the time they had the episode around the convention, which was less bad than feared but still over used.

"Is there going to be more Inspector Spacetime?"

"I'm sorry There's no inspector Spacetime in season 5 as of right now ... I've talked about this before; Inspector Spacetime had a really lofty goal, I wanted it to be what it did start to become- the show dialoging with the fans.
But what happened was that it became so successful at it that Sony legal kinda panicked- not to villify them, they didn't really realize what they were getting into- and there was some poor guy at Sony Legal who's job was to watch all the Doctor Whos.... some poor guy in a tie- I picture him in a tie- with a little adding machine at his desk, writing these emails, "This is obviously a reference to K9- you cant kid a kidder! It's a robot cat and a robot dog, we get it!". Like, he had to take all the minutia."

On the one hand, I feel really bad for Megan because of that first quote. That sounds exactly like something Harmon would say and it's sad to see that the show broke her like that.

On the other hand, according to the Season 3 commentary she's the reason Britta got so dumb later in the show so eff her.
