I didn't play much Dredmor but from what I saw it reminded me of DoomRL the most in regards to character building.

They don't feel at all alike to me; Dredmor is about selecting skill trees (well, not trees, more like poles) to fill out a package during character creation and then actually advancing through those skill trees during play. DoomRL you choose a class and then you pick up perks during play, some of which have mutually exclusive requisites.

The unlockable "Adventurer" class in ToME is sort of like that: They start with every skill tree in the game available to unlock, and 7 "category points" (which are used to unlock skill trees).

Of course, they're not supposed to be balanced at all, and you have to beat the game to unlock them, so it's not quite what you're asking for.

Hey what are you using for 2D in Unity anyway? I tried a 3rd party 2D api and it would always create seams between tiles, it was super ugly. Of course, that was summer 2012. I was thinking of treating myself to a week of Oryx sprites + Unity come 7DRL next March.

Yyyyyyep. I actually got him down to half health before being overwhelmed by those teleporting robots that have way too much health. For real those things aren't fun at all and make me want to not play the game solo. I also think the overly vertical levels are a bit of a slog.

I wrote a nice, automated sprite & atlas management system based on ex2D for Sproggiwood, and some upcoming prototypes. I like code-oriented stuff, and I started using ex2D before Futile was widely available. Futile is probably a better approach these days; but supposedly even the stock built-in 2D in Unity is actually pretty good now.

e: Seaming from tiles is usually due to not having contour-padding enabled on your atlases; so you'll see sub-pixel filtering artifacts at the very edges. If you turn on a few pixels of contour padding, it should go away.

Yeah, that guy's a dick, the best way of beating them available to most characters is if you get some kind of mines item. If you get the Panic Mine item or three, I hope you like hanging out in lava :allears:

So in Risk of Rain it sure seems like the starting class Commando is way better than the Enforcer and the Bandit, the other two I've unlocked. With the Enforcer using Protect & Serve just gets you wrecked since enemies constantly attack you from all sides and can just walk right through you. The Bandit's dynamite only has horizontal explosion range for some reason and constantly pressing the fire button sucks. The game is all about being mobile and doing damage and the Commando has a fast recharge dodge and a strong piercing shot which is almost required the way enemies bunch up. Am I missing something here or playing this game wrong?

There's a thread for that game actually: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3566885

But to answer your question, the Enforcer is really strong as long as you can keep the shield between you and your enemies. You've got a stun aoe and a very powerful knockback attack; use them to keep stuff out of your face. The Enforcer is definitely the weakest class but it's still playable. Kinda. (I haven't been able to win with it yet.

The Bandit? Ehhhhhhhhhhhh (I don't like the Bandit)

Actually, this made me think. Are there any sci-fi roguelikes that play in the traditional way? I mean, there's FTL, Teleglitch, and Risk of Rain to an extent, but I'm talking about something like Nethack with laser guns and nanites and poo poo. Is DoomRL as close as it gets?

Caves of Qud is literally that. Lasers, nanite tinkering, mutants, and more in a post apoc setting. Even robots!

there's a game called "ZAPM" that's literally a sci-fi Nethack, but you'd probably only like it if you like Nethack.

Waaaay back in the day there was BOSS, which was, if I recall correctly, a Moria variant. It was a mishmash of science-fiction and the occasional pop-culture reference (e.g. Dirty Harry was a townsperson). I remember wandering around with a Daisyian Umbrella for a weapon and firing rayguns instead of wands.

I mean, it's pretty easy to reskin a fantasy setting as a soft sci-fi setting. It's mostly just a matter of renaming things and making all of the monsters be the result of genetic engineering and mutation instead of magical tinkering.

I never really thought about it, but I suppose that's true. Still, I think it would be nice to see a game based around a uniquely sci-fi theme, like Deus Ex-style augmentations or Shadowrun-style hacking or something.

Also, you just made me realize that FTL could theoretically be re-skinned into a fantasy airship or pirate sim.
