I heard it was using the V6 F1 engine so in a roundabout way testing that thing without using an F1 car. They also said they're toying with making a prototype but they've always toyed with that.

People always speculate on this on forums and stuff but seriously just running on a dyno would be better than testing the engine in a bizzaro frankencar. All you would really learn is 'yes, the engine runs outdoors in a car'...

Only other thing I can think of is another Zonda R/FXX/gently caress Off Car for no better reason to be on the track. If we had GT1 rules of Mercedes/Porsche/McLaren hey day of the late 90s then it would definitely fit that.

There's 1001 things you can't test on a dyno, vibration being a big one as well as environmental heat. There's also drivability issues where your special snowflake driver hates an engine map that looks perfect on the computer screen. Plus there's the noise Di Montezemelo has been making about a return to Le Mans recently.

When I was on placement we spent a lot of time working on engine maps for one particular snowflake driver and apparently ended up with a map that most other drivers would hate.

The only other thing I can guess is they're pulling a Mercedes and trying to simulate a possible prototype by throwing mounds of downforce onto the car and see if the engine and stuff will be worth trying. Mercedes test mule for the CLK GTR was this modified McLaren F1.

But the thing is, you can't test things like vibration and environmental heat in a frakencar like that. It doesn't have the F1 car's airflow, the drive train packaging, the suspension, the wheelbase, nothin. Even the mappings would be way off because the car isnt running the correct grip, so all the rev marks and flows are gonna be wrong.

With the modern 'full assembly' dynos and stuff F1 teams have, I just can't see you really learning anything useful at all with an F1 engine jammed in another car.

e: ^^^^ I think BMB is onto it.

I should have clarified, I meant wedging it into something vaguely prototype shaped and testing it with Le Mans in mind, I suspect you're right there'll be little if anything to gain for the F1 program. And you absolutely could get a handle on vibration etc. with a frankenstein car like that, as long as the ride rates are about there you can go and rattle the car around and see what comes loose or breaks. BMB probably is right on the money.

Again I didn't mean to suggest they were testing engine mapping right now, it was just meant to be an example of poo poo that looks good as a set of graphs and in a simulator, and then the driver on the track on the day throws his hands up and declares it worthless.

So the new position lights in USCR showed up today... They are gonna straight up tell the crowd what place the cars are in.

Apparently its pretty big (roughly ipad sized) and it seems a little cheesy... but I think it will make the endurance races a lot easier to follow for the fans at the track.

GT3 did this last year at 24 Hrs of Spa. They had some bugs since I saw some cars with 00 and I think some fell off. Only problem I heard is the placement can get in the way of sponsors.

Of course it's not an either-or situation. It'll have been dyno tested to death. Even if it's not a perfect replication of an F1 car, it would at least provide further confidence that they won't turn up at the first test and find there is some vibration or g-force issue. With so little time and testing between Jerez and the first race, they can't afford to lose a single day.

So Ganassi team is going home because they can't get the engine to last. Yeah you may have posted the fastest time for the day with McMurray but if you can't last 2 hours without engine problems, those Ford's are going to have some problems during the race. Why I wouldn't bet the P2 cars from not working for having engines with good endurance while Chevy and Ford have new engines.

And as much as I like midweek motorsports, jesus christ the fans are insufferable. Yes Patrick Dempsey is wearing a watch that isn't a Rolex or Tudor. Who gives a gently caress?! Also yes broadcasting sucks, you know why? It's less popular than every stick and ball sport and won't be followed extensively like in Europe. Stop your whining, it's not doing anything. /rant

Sounds like the Ford is overheating the header. It's the same problem Honda had with their IndyCar engines, which lead to the 'heatbag' or header bag that Honda added around the primaries.

The Shank car is parked too.

e: Confirmation from Pruett

quote:

RACER has learned the Michael Shank Racing team will follow Ganassi's lead and conclude their test effective immediately. The Ford EcoBoost-powered cars suffered exhaust header failures, and with the extreme heat generated by the turbo systems, the risk of fire was too great to continue. "We're still getting everything in shape and we're making great progress, but there's still work to do," said Shank.

It'll be good that they will get help from Nissan and Hughes de Chaunac or Oreca to compete for Le Mans.

And the last day updates from Marshall Pruett. So far a Porsche and ESM car have crashed and Graham Rahal is saying the Corvette is sandbagging since they have straightaway speed supremacy.

Getting a little harder with all of the PC Oreca's with Chevy engines, the DPs with their Chevy engines, the BMW's grunt, and the Aston Martin's grunt. I'm totally supporting more grunting cars then whining ones.

That's why I never give a poo poo when people trash American cars. Whenever they show a Vette or Viper thundering down Mulsanne, the crowd is always going nuts because it's such a spectacle.

Other people may do V8's marginally better, but American V8's are the best V8's :colbert:

Passion doesn't necessarily justify throwing money into a sanctioning fee money pit. That said, perhaps Tariq Shaukat gets it better than whoever was running things at Caesar's 30 years ago (he's only been working there since 2012) and this might be the start of Caesar's Palace/Las Vegas keeping racing on/near the strip on a continuous basis.

I'm kind of at lost as to how you get Formula E to be well supported enough without it being a "support race" first.

It makes more sense to me to have FE run the Long Beach weekend for example.

IceAgeComing

pretty fucking embarrassing to watch
The one big thing that Formula E has going for it is running a bunch of races during the NH Winter; which is usually a dead time for big motorsports - but its not a guarantee of success as A1GP shows. Street tracks in big cities are usually quite risky; especially if they don't generate the money that people want it to. I want it to be successful; but I can't see it lasting for long as a standalone series racing through the streets of London - they'll either switch to support races for other events, or go standalone around other tracks that don't get big events. Part of me wonders if part of it is trying a bunch of street circuits to see how good they'd be for racing before Bernie decides to steal them for Formula 1...

I'd also never expect it to race at Long Beach - for some reason, I can't see an FIA event wanting to be a support series for an IndyCar race - even Long Beach...

Probably from a middle east oil sheik or prince or the usual type that backs these extravagant racing series.

Just as I finished typing that sentence, I realized it could not possibly be true. Why would an oil-producing country want to promote an anti-oil racing series?

Color me confused. It's astonishing there's this much hoopla and support behind the series this early in the game.
