This is one of those genre's that fills a whole in your life that you didn't even know existed until you discover it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1NAhlVRaZ4 It's also the only one that makes AMV's not retarded.

For anyone who hasn't seen it or know about it, check out the movie Beyond the Black Rainbow. The story with this movie, as I understand it, is the director grew up in the 1980's and was in video stores a lot, but was not allowed to rent or watch any R-rated horror or sci-fi movies. But he was infatuated with the box art. Since he couldn't watch any of the movies until he was older, he often imagined what the movies were like based on the artwork. Beyond the Black Rainbow is a combination of two of his different film ideas based on this 1980's box art. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAACUYMM2NU (actual early 80's syth pop, SSQ = Stacey Q)

On a side note, I strongly associate MWO with this kind of music, because I happened to listen to Kavinsky a lot when I first picked up the game.

I'm glad the bulk of this genre is vocal-free. In nine out of ten songs that would otherwise be good (for any given genre) it's because the vocals or the lyrics are cheesy/lovely, imo. Leaving them out means more awesome music to enjoy.

com truise never gets mentioned nearly enough when talking about this genre and it's p weird considering his music is some of the goddamn best the whole genre has to offer imo. Too many artists are trying to straight up emulate 80s electronic movie soundtracks it seems to me, instead of offering a completely original sound. Like others have said there are some that stand out but a lot is amateurish sounding crap even com truise's earlier aliases own bones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LJMBOMNGC8 Airliner - Ar ei ben ei hun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fki0n_kA4Gw Airliner - Conopophaga https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eu5jjBbClYs Sarin Sunday - Light Fragments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDjBHQZ3kp4 Com Truise - Video Arkade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqQ29I4AH7c Com Truise - A DAT 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJC4P7YAgQw Com Truise - I Dream (For You) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCPGQX9rU1s Com Truise - Fairlight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMjCxV7u8OA Com Truise - Brokendate (video pretty much defines the genre, also com truise is the fat gently caress villain in the video) in two months i'm going to get drunk as poo poo and listen to this stuff live and it's going to be awesome

The recent anime series Jojo's bizarre adventure is a faithful adaption of a classic seminal boy's action series that started in the mid-80's - every character in the series is named after some kind of pop tune, pop star, or pop lyric, and the series has a decidedly pop music influenced vibe to it all. (In fact, "Jojo" comes from the Beatles song "Get back.") Anyway - the show has been trying to go for a retro 80's anime look and vibe, as the original comic itself was heavily influenced by New Wave fashion. This extends to both the music and the art style. The soundtrack for the series is fantastic and expansive - and a good deal of the music falls into the category of new retro wave. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHUi90ouqmU This is what the show's like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aB-LZfxCZs Here's a few standout tracks, though the entire soundtrack is fantastic: (Note the remix of 'owner of a lonely heart' at the start of this - the band "Yes" in particular is a massive influence on the entire Jojo series.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTaOVtdUlmU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4458fC7mDsc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1jp0Dxa9tQ There's also a new series starting in a few months - it's going to be pulling more influence from late 80's and early 90's hard rock, hiphop, experimental electronic, and metal that was popular around that time rather than 80's-ish new retro wave though. Here's the teaser: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPxXvrjpxCk This is one of those 'people who hate anime will love the gently caress out of this' series. Speaking of which, the creator of the series Hirohiko Araki's interest in fashion design lead to a recent collaboration with Gucci - this is from the Gucci storefront in New York City.
