frogbs posted:I don't understand how anyone who likes Community at all could hate this episode, yet most commenters elsewhere seem to have not enjoyed it. Weird! If you know enough about this show to know about all the behind the scenes poo poo going on with Harmon then it's fairly easy to look at this as a return to real actual Community. With that comes all of the whiny nerd bullshit that comes with a long hiatus/cancellation including critically analyzing every frame of the loving thing and comparing it to the show's best episodes in its peak years. But even without that, season 4 tends to leave a really bad taste in peoples' mouths and you're not going to be able to win everyone back. Sort of odd that that one Dave joke was pretty close to "You like Phil Collins? I have two ears and a heart, don't I?" line from 30 Rock. Wonder if Glover wrote both of them.

Hate to be that guy, but I thought this was the weakest episode so far. It wasn't bad, but it didn't really do anything for me. It definitely referenced movies pretty well, but it didn't really do anything with them. The jokes weren't super funny. Still better than season 4 though. Low season 3 quality. I wish they'd set up Pierce being banned from campus in the repilot too.

Episode was okay but everything involving music was loving golden. Shirley's boys singing "Creep", the intro credits, the Tom Waits/Nick Cave tribute about buttcracks, five seconds of "Adagio For Strings" before facebook search finished, and of course all the stuff about Dave Matthews. Also somehow Shirley is starting to become my favorite character. Her nonverbal acting has been excellent, just check out her lip-synching to creep.

Apparently Annie promised to stop the rear end crack bandit way back in season 2's election episode. (And Reddit thinks ACB is Pierce. They also normalised the pitch of the voice message - it just sounds like some generic guy. But some think it sounds like Todd.) VagueRant fucked around with this message at 09:14 on Jan 10, 2014 |

I could not be happier about how this season is going so far, it really is like it got a second wind. I had been avoiding spoilers, so I watched the last few minutes of the episode with my jaw on the floor and marvelling in how they brought it all together at the end. This show has no business being on network television and I love it for that.

Just saw the reviews for this episode, which were once more stellar. With NBC struggling like it is, what are the chances we get our 6th season (And a movie...) simply due to them giving up and trying to brand it as "Well, at least the critics love it!" ?

If they can maintain a 1.3 against BBT, then the answer is, "probably, yeah." So the answer is likely no. But you never know. It IS NBC.

Helps that the episode was solid overall. I thought it was interesting that they came up with the most ridiculous crisis possible and immediately juxtaposed it with the most serious and depressing event. They handled Pierce's death weirdly realistically; it came out of nowhere and just bulldozed over everything else that they were wrapped up in. Now his death will forever be associated with the asscrack bandit, and I'm not sure if that's hilarious or sad.

Pleasantly surprised, but surprised nonetheless. Sean and MJ are dead sitcoms walking, so they're nothing to compare it to. The real question is, will NBC wipe the slate clean? They could just do that. But if Community performs well enough against BBT, then it's better than anything else they could conceivably put in that timeslot.

I didn't really dig that episode overall. They nailed the tone and the colour grading was especially spot-on but it just felt like a lesser season 3 episode with less good jokes. and that Troy stuff did make me a little uncomfortable, but not enough to derail the ep or anything. I was hoping this season would be a little more grounded than 3, but I guess Harmon has no intention of that. Still super excited for next week!

I agree with this sentiment. A lot of the jokes were purely stylistic, so if you aren't a fan of that sort of movie/specific Fincher ref (like myself, generally speaking) it was an episode full of winks and nods that just weren't aimed at you. Doesn't necessarily make it bad but there is a subset of people for whom this episode will just simply not work on a basic level.
