If you made me pick between a cat and a controller I'd pick cat any day.

I had no idea that poltergeist had a physical body in ShoC, shame it's not more obvious because it's loving creepy. It'd be cool if they were sometimes passive and just did scary poo poo.

And drat, I actually find all the C-Consciousness stuff very interesting, it's too bad ShoC is such a kick square in the balls and I never completed it. The end that is.

In the RMA Old Storyline Restoration mod, if you're lucky you can see them crawling around.

Maybe they do it in the regular game too, but I've put hundreds of hours into SHOC counting mods and didn't see it until RMA. Imagine my surprise when, just trucking through the first lab like it ain't no thang because I've done it like 50 times, I turned a corner and found one of those bastards dragging himself along the floor. :stonk:

Yeah, it's pretty surprising when you kill one and their "true" body falls to the ground. I think a lot of the creepiness is derived from the fact that their appearance isn't obvious, and many people seem to deal with the glowing, intagible balls of light by simply running through the labs and avoiding them. So when they eventually realize they can kill them and finally see what they really look like, it's quite a surprise. I don't think it'd be as magical a reveal if it were more obvious.

That's what I did! It makes sense, the only thing that's bullshit is the poltergeist that is in some blocked off room in the lab that constantly throws poo poo at you. Poltergeists have a setting that in the vanilla game never gets used, which is their "power usage", I guess. If you go into m_poltergeist.ltx you'll see something along these lines:

code:
Invisible_Energy_Restore_Velocity				= 0.1
Invisible_Energy_Decline_Velocity				= 0.0
Invisible_Energy_Critical_Value					= 0.01
Invisible_Energy_Activate_Value					= 0.99
Invisible_Energy_Aggressive_Restore_Velocity	= 0.1
The important part is the "decline_velocity" part. If you set that to higher than 0, then poltergeists will user energy when they're invisible, eventually run out, and will crawl across the floor fully visible until they restore enough to go invisible again.

These are the settings I'm using:

code:
Invisible_Energy_Restore_Velocity				= 0.08
Invisible_Energy_Decline_Velocity				= 0.02
Invisible_Energy_Critical_Value					= 0.02
Invisible_Energy_Activate_Value					= 0.99
Invisible_Energy_Aggressive_Restore_Velocity	= 0.5
The cool thing is that the poltergeist actually has a "crawling" animation. It pulls itself along using its arms. This is never, ever used in the game, though. Most people don't even know it exists unless you do this tweak.

Now this is annoying.

Finally got to Yantar in Stalkersoup. So far having a blast, it's ridiculous how easy killing off the Cordon Military Bridge Checkpoint made the early game. Got an RPD off of the officer, so a fully automatic 76 drum round magazine machine gun for the early stages of the game makes things a tad bit easy.

So, the problem that I am having is that in Yantar, Professor Sakharov won't talk to me. F, and he just stands there blankly. Already killed all the zombies around the area, Kruglov is gone and nowhere to be found, and I really wanna buy NATO poo poo because, like it or not, NATO poo poo is a good deal more effective than Russian guns.

Re-enter the map. I honestly just use the teleport command so I don't have to run all the way to the exit and run all the way back. Also on that note about NATO poo poo, one of his quests gives you, hands down, the best gun in the game. And it's Russian. :v:

That's weird. When ever I had that problem, re-entering would always fix it. Yantar is one of the buggier areas, so you might need to reload an older save. Good thing Stalkersoup saves after basically everything I guess. v:shobon:v

I think the only gun that all-around outperforms the Vintorez in SoC is the scoped AS Val you get from Voronin. Then in CoP they made it pretty lovely (read:balanced).

With regard to Stalker 2, the devs moved on to start work on Survarium, but does anyone know how close it was to completion before the fallout between GSC/staff? Basically is there any chance of ever seeing a mostly-finished Stalker 2 leaked/released for the dedicated modding community to get their hands on?

They didn't get very far. They were about a year in when GSC shut down (for all intents and purposes - the whole company now is basically just one dude who manages the STALKER rights) and development mostly froze while the team split off on their own to find funding and secure the rights to the STALKER name. They would have needed at least another 2 years to finish, but considering it was multi-platform and supposedly using an entirely new engine built from the ground up, 2 was probably on the low end. So, maybe 20% complete? They did eventually find funding through the venture capital firm Vostok Ventures, but couldn't reach an agreement over the IP rights. The development team was rebranded as Vostok Games, everything made for STALKER 2 was scrapped (and/or possibly relinquished back to GSC), and work on Survarium began.

Full interview where I'm pulling this from: http://www.vg247.com/2012/11/14/s-t-a-l-k-e-r-2-collapse-was-forced-move-says-survarium-dev/

I wouldn't hold my breath on any of their work on STALKER 2 seeing the light of day, if it even still exists, but it's possible; after all, you can find tons of old SHOC builds in various states of completion spanning the game's entire development history if you know where to look.

On the plus side Survarium is actually pretty cool. All that's in so far is the team deathmatch-esque game mode but the feel and the visuals and all that stuff are exactly right, so hopefully when they put in coop and free roam stuff in some months it'll wind up being pretty good as a new stalker game.

I just finished Call of Pripyat Complete for a first playthrough. That was an amazing game! Loved the weather but I think the sheer number of zombies kind of made getting loot and cash a little easy.

It depends what you're looking for in a mod.

You can't really go wrong with Misery if you like a more challenging game and new weapons. I'm personally not into it but I can see why it's a big hit.

SGM is cool if you're looking for new quests and content but it's very different and not for everyone.

Swartz mod I would remove from the op as I feel the versions I released are out-classed by some more recent mods that are very similar.

You can't really go wrong with Pripyat Reborn + Original Weapons Renewal 2 (though Pripyat Reborn does have some nasty bugs and crashes in place at the moment, so if enhanced AI isn't your thing skip it for now).

Another interesting mod is Shoker 2.0 which you can find linked here. Noticeable features are 3d shell casings, lots of weapons, ability to place machine guns on a bipod, 3d scopes, ability to see your legs when you look down, and a very cool cutscene at the beginning.
However it's a bit of an experimental mod (movement is very strange, you can't hit anything on full-auto) but worth a try if you want something different and are into gun porn.
It may not work correctly with the Steam version as it has it's own program it launches the game from (and if you do try it back up your bin folder first!).

I've been watching YouTube videos of Shoker 2.0 and another interesting feature I noticed is that the weapons are "tangible". That is, weapons actually occupy space in first-person and will interact with objects in the world. Get too close to a wall and the player will automatically adjust their weapon to compensate for the obstruction--and the orientation of the barrel will actually affect where your shoot. And I've always loved 3D scopes, despite how rare of a mechanic it is. It's really loving cool that you can use your iron sights, even after mounting certain scopes (because that's how they were designed).

Seriously, the weapons in this mod look great, and come to life with really competent accessory system and animations. I mean, just check out this AS VAL.

The blur from depth of field, while not technically "realistic", is an effect I really love seeing during reloading. It's implemented really nicely in that mod, maybe I'll pick it up. Looks super pretty all around.

Shoker 2.0 is one of the most exciting things to come out of the STALKER modding community in a really long time. There's stuff in that mod that's never been done before and I wouldn't think half of it was even possible in Xray. I can only imagine the kind of coding voodoo that went in to making it. I'm knee-deep in a Misery 2.1 beta run at the moment and mostly really liking it despite some weird performance issues (it's way more stable than 2.0 but generally runs worse for some reason), so I'm going to wait until I finish/get bored with that before trying out Shoker. Hopefully it's patched up a bit more and has a proper translation by then because it seems to be in a really rough state at the moment.

Another gun porny (albeit smaller in scale) mod in the same vein as Shoker to keep an eye on is Gunslinger, but there's no telling when that will see release, let alone a translation.

Something to note if you install the Shoker mod. If you use the guys translation patch on his moddb, you need to install if over the base install, then install the Shoker patch. The reason why is that the patch is newer than the translation, and will crash if you do it the other way around. The items seem to still be translated, though I'm sure some of the other things arn't working.

Yeah, that mod needs to hurry up and come out so I can jam every weapon and see what it's custom unjamming animation is. Not even joking.

After playing Shoker for a bit, it really makes you appreciate the upgrade system in base CoP. 9x39 weapons are basically worthless because of how large the ranges are in CoP, and how much you need to compensate for bullet drop and travel speed, which is a real shame because of how much more powerful they are than other rounds. Also the base round is super inaccurate compared to its AP, while also not having the sniper round that most other calibers have.

The switching between scope and ironsights is really cool though, though there's not many weapons yet where it works. Beta and all. v:shobon:v

9x39 is meant to be a close range round anyway. If you're good with the rangefinder you can make it work at longer ranges, but it really should be a "sneak up on enemy, fill them with holes from under 30 meters" kind of engagement.

MadBimber
Dec 31, 2006
I've always preferred that bullet drop as I learned quite early to account for it, even out to ranges where you can barely see through the fog. The 9x39 guns tend to be almost 100% accurate, so all you need to worry about to score that quiet headshot is properly leading and ranging your shot.
