The important thing here is that they said "taking the piss" and now everyone in here knows what it means. You learnt a cool idiom today, Americans. YOU'RE WELCOME.

How else would they translate very thick regional slang that is a common ingredient in Japanese humour? That's actual taking of the mickey right there.

(The heavy Hokkaido accent from that one speaker of the Airport batsu was an untranslatable accent though, because it's next to a separate language, more so than Gullah when compared to English)

Is it good? It seems to be taking its time making it's way onto the internet this year so I haven't been able to watch it yet.

Pretty much every year I think, "This is finally going to be the year that I watch the whole taiga drama!" but it never happens.

I usually get bored with the ones that have lots of military stuff faster, though. I think I stuck with Atsuhime the longest.

Way I see it, if some weird rear end Japanese TV show teaches you things about other cultures as well as Japanese culture, even if it's as insignificant as figuring out what taking the piss means, it's pretty cool. There's plenty of times I see things American translations too and wonder what the hell you're going on about. Like when you call things a patsy, we generally don't use that word at all.

That's my point, though, people just warped this into some dumb thing where I'm American thus everything must be the American way and Americans don't want to learn about anybody but themselves.

I knew what "taking the piss" meant from the start because I spent a good chunk of my 20s working alongside someone from London who over time taught me tons of slang and whatnot but I obviously can't be counted for everyone. It's just a bad habit for translation, especially when you consider the context of a world-wide viewing audience.

As for making the translations more "warm" or whatever I find that it's only of value now as an arguing point and I've never seen past translations here criticized or praised for using very plain English.

People suddenly getting up in arms(see, they're freaking everywhere) over this strikes me as odd considering how people usually nail them for Engrish or bad typesetting. I don't think using idioms is great when you consider the audience you're translating for in this case, sorry. It doesn't ruin the translation at all, it was just a passing critique.

The target language is English which, shocker to you anyway since you clearly can't interpret what that map means, is often a second or third language to many people which means, shocker again, that they often do not know idioms or slang specific to one of the two major branches of English. That's why you keep it basic and don't make it more complex than it needs to be for the sake of making someone say "hey, I recognize that phrase, this translation makes me feel warm and comfy and reminds me of home".
"Taking the piss" is a very common phrase in most English-speaking countries where you can hear it nearly everyday. It's quite likely the translators thought they were keeping it basic rather than deliberately confusing a portion of their audience.

I wonder if the pace isn't too fast. Maybe they front loaded a lot of the content - Endo's family came out of nowhere, which was brilliant, but you can't pull them out more than once. Chono is certainly going to come back but last time he made two appearances it was Tanaka who caught the first slap. Maybe they have a really big Claudia Umemiya show planned later on.

I'm not sure but I sorta hope theres something a bit less traditional a bit later. I mean I know that theres a tag section later on which will take up some time but still, I sorta see them getting some of the major things out of the way as an excuse to change things up, however slightly.

I forgot about the tag teaser. So tag game, maybe a long incompetent skit, Itoh's gotta show up at some point, same with Maeda Bibari, stupid human tricks from the Headtowel group, midnight gossip crew, and the scary bits at the end. Maybe it's a good thing they edited out some of the drawer gags this year?

They didn't, the team simply missed subbing it. They've updated part 2 with the missing drawer subs.

I wish they'd drop some of these things and try out more new stuff. Stuff like the Chono slap was super funny to me the first one or two times but when you see it like 5 years in a row it kinda loses it's charm.

I still enjoy the batsu games a lot but they've probably gotten a little too predictable.

I guess you've never seen the hilarious earlier ones then. Having all five being punished was great at first, but it's become stale, as evidenced by someone a couple of posts up recalling, no doubt from memory, every single beat of the last five specials. I love these to death and I'll keep watching them, but I wish they'd either change it up or not feel compelled to do one every year.

Plus, this way they could go back to doing eliminations to see who's in the batsu game and we can have more awesomeness like Electric Socket Russian Roulette.

Setting Gaki against each other for batsu games was great.

The answer here is clearly that there should be a half year Batsu where they play against each other.

Those are unique because they're doing different things, not because they have fewer people involved. If the problem is that recent games have fallen into a rut of doing the same things every year, then the answer is to do different things, not to remove people from the equation.

Removing people/changing them from allies to antagonists is, in fact, a different thing compared to the past few years.

I guess we're watching two different things because I watch the older ones with the group split up and they're just as/more funny than what's on today. Maybe I'm just burnt out.

We're both burnt out if that's the case. Most recent batsu I properly loved was the last that had the crew split, Police batsu.

There's been a bunch of unaired footage shown for this already, more looking forward to that being translated than the remaining 3-4 hours of the batsugame itself.

You didn't like Hospital? Hospital is not the best batsu, it's easily the best batsu to me. I loved Police and Onsen Yugawara but Hospital was the best and was essentially the basis for the rest of the batsu to follow and I honestly think it was such a success to them that they decided against splitting up for the games anymore.

Newspaper was also tremendous and my 2nd favorite "full" batsu game, but I could watch Hospital over and over and never sicken of it.

Haha! Wow did the comedians decide to do this as a sorta "Why not"? It's just crazy seeing all the comedians at one time.

Also totally don't get Kojima's style of comedy. It's mostly dancing and not caring?

This makes too much money. If it's formulaic it's because they found a formula that works really well and makes mad cash.

The whole Gaki crew works best as an ensemble I think and now that they're older and successful they're less likely to do one off stupid batsus over a bet. They don't need to draw in ratings anymore, they just need to keep the audience they've built with the big flashy annual batsu.
