Man, that was a fantastic episode in so many ways. The rhythm of the dialogue felt right at home with S1 and S2 and almost everything hit just right. The way Pierce died is kind of like the fart joke in that comedy you really, really like and you just kind of know they couldn't resist doing it.

I really didn't enjoy the first episode this season and I've been lukewarm about the rest but if they can do this well maybe things are looking up. But if they fall back into season 3 territory, I'll just consider this episode the series finale and feel satisfied.

Big ol' smile.
Pierce died in the process of preparing a grandiose final monument to himself, a monument whose value was inflated by his persistent denial insisting that his sperm were "hyper-virile" instead of sterile. If that's not a character-appropriate way to die, I don't know what is.

The really amazing thing was how in character the questions were for Pierce. I've been sort of missing his character the last few episodes, and even if he wasn't there in person, it still felt like he was sitting in the room.

I like that every Pierce episode in the last few years has had less and less of him until finally he's completely absent.

I actually thought this episode was pretty drat depressing and cynical. It made the entire study group into terrible, broken people, albeit in a comical way. Shirley feeding Britta meat against her will, Annie drugging everyone, Abed implanting trackers on everyone, this is all seriously some dark poo poo. Switching it up at the end to "oh well you are all messed up but you are still beautiful :unsmith:" didn't really work for me at all.

Dan Harmon does bring a lot to the show but this kind of darkness is also something he brings which I definitely did not miss, holy poo poo.

Umm that darkness is exactly what was missing from the show. IE: Mixology Certification

Mixology Certification had them being flawed characters at worst, and ended with genuine heartfelt moments when Troy drove them all home. There is a big difference between Shirley (potentially) being alcoholic and Jeff and Britta being super arrogant and obnoxious about their bar/drink choices, and the stuff they did to each other in this episode. And the way it turned on a dime from "you guys all have some serious boundary issues and sociopathic tendencies" to "did you know you're a good person" didn't feel at all earned.

Basically, a little darkness helps to flesh out characters and fosters a (slightly dysfunctional) family dynamic. The poo poo in this episode was a cartoonish as anything from the darkest timeline but not played as an over-the-top gag.

mcbexx posted:

Yes, he was suspended for a single season and then was brought back this year to great critical acclaim!

(just to be clear, Harmon himself is the biggest reason for his own firing, and they aren't burning up the ratings to such an extent that anyone is going to eat poo poo for the big mistake of firing him)

I suppose I just read it as being quite within their nature but not the kind of thing they'd ever admit. Britta needing to be high to deal with Shirley's stuff seems about right and couples with Britta actually attending which is quite a bit if character growth. Abed literally taking everyone seems pretty in point too but couching it as some form of hostage rescue wasn't necessary. Just seemed like the kind if invasive thing Abed always does.

I don't know, seemed like a total tonal match for season two characters to me, revved up only because it was Pierce's masterstroke. They were dark secrets sure, but that was the point.

WOKE UP IN THE DESERT AGAIN
Shirley was awesome in this episode. The wide shot over the polygraph operator's shoulder with the delivery of "WE KNOW THAT YOU JUDGMENTAL BITCH" got a laugh out of me.

I kinda hope the character fills out and takes over as the groups occasional antagonist-from-within. She definitely has the I'm-delightfully-unaware-of-my-own-intolerance angle down pat, and she may be sufficiently damaged -and prideful- enough to become the kind of person who'll step on toes for the attention and company. Not that she needs to become Pierce 2.0, but a little nastiness would be a welcome change from her token "I gotta get home to my kids" contribution to the groups' wacky antics.

I actually liked the "origin story" episode. The s4 finale was pretty good until having the "it was all a dream" moment with the darkest timeline-themed psychosis being in jeff's head when abed is the only person by the show's rules allowed to have broad alternative reality gags

On the criticism of the latest ep Guy A. Person was bringing up, the only bit of dark character history that struck me as out of place was Annie having possession of Adderall either by keeping a personal stash or, god forbid, buying from a dealer. And with regards to Abed, I'm sensing a shift in his overall character coming soon.

Also, why are people hailing S1 and S2 but seemingly maligning S3? I thought the show has only gotten better and better (e:with exception to the gas leak year), and heavy character-centric episodes like Virtual Systems Analysis are the best.

This isn't the case. The season 4 finale is weaker than even the rest of that season by a wide, wide margin.

I honestly don't get why people like Herstory of Dance. To me Jim's episode was pretty great, while the "Keep Pierce away from Greendale" episode felt like a really inoffensive season one episode. I recall even getting a couple of laughs from the first episode, too. Now, a few did stand out as overwhelmingly awful - I think "Germans 2" is probably the worst episode of the show.

But this episode was really great. I liked how the Fun 4 Friendz video had a cowboy theme.

Christmas was Malcom McDowell tied up. It was decent by Season 4 standards.

Season 3 also pushed Dean forward- but it reached stupid levels in season 4. I actually felt Chang was used better in season 4 than the Dean.
